Madonna opens Pediatric Surgery Center for children in Malawi, names it after her adopted daughter


American singer, Madonna, through her Raising Malawi charity has officially opened a Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Care Center at the Queen Central Hospital in Malawi. The  Mercy James Institute for Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Care for children in Malawi was named after her adopted daughter, Mercy James. The singer who was accompanied by her Malawian children to the event and was joined by President Peter Mutharika of Malawi at the opening ceremony which took place on Tuesday.



Speaking about the importance of the center, she said: "The Mercy James Center remains not only a world-class intensive care hospital, but also a superior learning environment to train the next generation of Malawian healthcare workers," Madonna said "This is as much about healing as it is about empowerment."
In 2009, Madonna adopted Mercy James from the country and earlier this year added twins Esther and Stella Mwale to her family. Madonna also has two older children, daughter Lourdes and son Rocco, from previous relationships.
