 Iran has sentenced 51 people to death by stoning because they were caught cheating on their partners.
 A total of 23 women and 28 men currently await death as hardline Islamist judges and lawmakers continue to take a zero-tolerance attitude towards adultery, which is considered a grave sin under their interpretation of the Quran.
In Iran, death by stoning involves wrapping victims in linen and burying them in sand up to their waists before they are pelted with rocks. Those sentenced to death by stoning often experience waits of several years without knowing their execution date, with most only finding out when executioners arrive at their cell door.

South Africa: Mystery, as 21 teenagers found dead at East London tavern

 

  Police Minister Bheki Cele has declared war on liquor outlets that do not comply with the law following the shocking death of 21 teenagers at the Enyobeni tavern in East London on Sunday.
It has been determined that the deceased, between the ages of 13 and 17, are school children who were at the outlet to celebrate the end of June school exams.
The families were requested to visit the mortuary to assist in identifying their children.
Nandipha Tyutywana, whose 17-year-old daughter was among those who survived, said she was beyond grateful.

 The US Senate has passed a gun control bill the most significant firearms legislation in 30 years.
 The bill comes after mass shootings last month at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, and a primary school in Uvalde, Texas, that left 31 people dead.
Fifteen Republicans joined Democrats in the upper chamber of Congress to approve the measure by 65 votes to 33 on Thursday June 23.
 The bill will now have to pass in the House of Representatives before US President Biden can sign it into law.
In a statement released after the vote, the president called on members of the House to "promptly vote on this bipartisan bill and send it to my desk".

Singer R. Kelly sentenced to 30 years over s3x crimes

 

 Disgraced R&B singer R. Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison Wednesday for leading a decades-long effort to recruit and trap teenagers and women for sex.
Judge Ann Donnelly handed down the term in the Brooklyn federal court nearly a year after the 55-year-old Kelly was convicted by a New York jury.
"The verdict is in: R. Kelly has been sentenced to 30 years," the US attorney's office for the Eastern District of New York said in a tweet.
The prosecutors had urged the court to put the "I Believe I Can Fly" artist behind bars for at least 25 years, saying he still "poses a serious danger to the public."

EU awards Ukraine and Moldova candidate status

 

 Ukraine's long-term goal of joining the European Union has received its latest shot in the arm, after the bloc's 27 member states agreed Thursday that the country should be given candidate status — a significant step on the path to full membership for the war torn country.
"Today marks a crucial step on your path towards the EU," European Council President Charles Michel said on Twitter after talks in Brussels. Leaders also agreed to approve Moldova's candidacy.
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said he "sincerely commends" the European Council's decision, calling it "a unique and historical moment in EU/Ukraine relations." The decision, made at an EU Council summit, comes a week after President of the European Commission Ursula von Der Leyen said it was the opinion of the bloc's executive body that Ukraine deserved candidate status because it "has clearly demonstrated the country's aspiration and the country's determination to live up to European values and standards."

 Two men have been charged in connection with the deaths of 51 migrants who were found in sweltering conditions in a semitruck in San Antonio, according to criminal complaints filed in US District Court for the Western District of Texas.
Juan Claudio D'Luna-Mendez and Juan Francisco D'Luna-Bilbao have been charged with "possession of a weapon by an alien illegally in the United States," according to the criminal complaints that were filed Monday, the same day the migrants were found. Authorities were able to locate the men after responding to the semi-truck incident, according to the affidavit.

President Biden signs gun control bill into law in wake of deadly mass shootings

 

 US President Joe Biden on Saturday, June 25,  signed into law the most significant gun control bill in nearly 30 years less than 24 hours after it passed through Congress.
 The Democrat signed the bipartisan gun safety bill, which was drafted in the wake of the deadly mass shootings in Uvalde, Texas, and Buffalo, N.Y., the day after it cleared the House in a 234-193 vote. Fourteen Republicans voted with Democrats in supporting the measure.
“Time is of the essence. Lives will be saved,” Biden said, adding that when he returns from a trip to Europe, he will host the lawmakers who worked on the legislation and family members of gun violence victims at the White House.

A giant stingray may be the world’s largest freshwater fish

 

 For 17 years, Zeb Hogan, a biologist, has been searching for the world’s largest freshwater fish. On June 13, his team found it — a giant freshwater stingray, or Urogymnus polylepis. The ray, hauled out of the murky waters of the Mekong River in Cambodia, measured 13 feet in length before it was returned to the river. And at 661 pounds, it was 15 pounds heavier than a Mekong giant catfish caught in Thailand in 2005. Dr. Hogan said he had previously established that freshwater fish as the largest ever caught.
While this species of giant stingray has an extremely dangerous venomous barb that can reach nearly a foot in length, they are not usually a threat to humans. More often, they wind up in the market as a source of cheap protein.

Saudi Arabian government officials have cracked down on rainbow-colored toys and clothing from shops in the country's capital, Riyadh, on Tuesday, saying the items promote homosexuality, according to Saudi state-run TV channel al-Ekhbariya.
"We are having to look out for slogans that violate the rules of Islam and public morals like promoting homosexuality colors, targeting the young generation," said an official from the Ministry of Commerce, who was unnamed in the report and is involved in the campaign, according to al-Ekhbariya.
Homosexuality is illegal in Saudi Arabia, which adheres to a strict interpretation of Sharia law.
The items which were seized by authorities were seen to be bright in color, ranging from children's hair accessories, pencil cases, and backpacks to rainbow stripes featured in crayon packets, all designed for children, the al-Ekhbariya report details.

At least 200 civilians killed in western Ethiopia, say reports and officials

 

 At least 200 civilians are believed to have been killed in Ethiopia's Oromia region by rebel group the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) on Saturday, according to reports, a rights group and local officials. Most of the victims are from the Amhara ethnic group, a police officer said.
The attack on the town of Gimbi was connected to fighting between government forces and the OLA, according to a statement from the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC). The EHRC told CNN Monday that the assault has left "scores of people injured, villages destroyed, and entire communities traumatized."

Afghanistan was rocked by its deadliest earthquake in decades on Wednesday when a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck the country's east, killing more than 1,000 people and wounding many more, according to a regional official.
The humanitarian disaster comes at a difficult time for the Taliban-ruled country, currently in the throes of hunger and economic crises.
The shocks hit at 1:24 a.m. local time on Wednesday (4:54 p.m. ET on Tuesday) around 46 kilometers (28.5 miles) southwest of the city of Khost, which lies close to the country's border with Pakistan, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake registered at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), according to USGS, which designated it at yellow alert level -- indicating a relatively localized impact.

Nato's secretary-general, Jens Stoltenberg on Sunday, June 19 after a meeting with the military alliance's defence ministers, warned that the costs of war were high, but the price of letting Moscow achieve its military goals with Ukraine was even greater.
Also, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned of a longer-term conflict.
Stoltenberg and Boris Johnson said sending more weapons would make a victory for Ukraine more likely.

Cow arrested for killing 12-year-old boy in South Sudan

 South Sudanese authorities have confirmed they have arrested a cow for the murder of a 12-year-old boy. Police said they detained the cow along with its owner after the animal allegedly attacked the child near a farm in the Lakes State.
It's been reported that the child was killed instantly due to the ferocity of the attack.
 Major Elijah Mabor, a South Sudanese police spokesman, has confirmed that the animal is "under arrest".
He said: "The bull is now under arrest at a police station in Rumbek Central County.
 "The boy was taken to hospital for post-mortem and he was taken home for burial."
 Just a month ago, a ram was arrested and charged with the murder of a 45-year-old woman in South Sudan. The cow was then sentenced to three years in jail.

Petro beat Rodolfo Hernández, a former mayor of Bucaramanga and a business mogul, with 50.47% of the vote in a runoff election on Sunday and will take office in July.
 Hernández had 47.27%, with almost all ballots counted, according to results released by election authorities.

 North Korea has reported an outbreak of an unidentified intestinal disease in the country following the outbreak of covid-19 .
At least 800 families suffering from what North Korea has only called an "acute enteric epidemic" have received aid so far in South Hwanghae Province, about 75 miles south of the capital Pyongyang.
State media reported on Sunday, June 19 that North Korea dispatched medical crews and epidemiological investigators to a province battling the outbreak of an intestinal disease.

 Spain's female footballers will receive the same bonuses as their male counterparts as part of a new five-year agreement, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced on Tuesday.
The deal will also see players receive money from future sponsorship arrangements, income from image rights regularised and improvements in the team's working conditions.
The agreement comes into force immediately, with Spain among the favourites for this summer's European Championships, which get underway in England next month.
"We have agreed with the Spanish Women's National Team the amounts that will be allocated in bonuses and image rights during Euro 2022 and for the next five years," the RFEF said in a statement.
"Through the agreement, the bonuses received in percentages by the players are equal to those received by the [men].

Two confirmed dead after helicopter crashes into field near Yorkshire village

 

 A helicopter crash has left two people dead after it fell from the sky to a field in North Yorkshire, police have confirmed.
 The incident happened today, June 20, shortly before midday.
Emergency services were spotted at the scene including an air ambulance and at least four fire engines. North Yorkshire Police said in a statement that "two people were sadly killed as a result of the crash," with emergency services responding to the scene of the incident off Bentham Road, near Burton in Lonsdale.

Ex-Footballer Samuel Eto’o pleads guilty to tax fraud to avoid prison time



Former Cameroon footballer, Samuel Eto’o has struck a deal with Spanish prosecutors to avoid going to jail for tax fraud he committed while playing for Barcelona, a court in the city announced Monday, June 20.
 Eto’o, who played for Barcelona from 2004 to 2009, received a fine and a 22-month suspended sentence but will not serve any time, as is customary in Spain for prison terms of under two years for non-violent crimes.
Following the agreement with the government, Eto’o, 41, will pay a fine of 1.8 million euros ($1.9 million).

 Paris Saint-Germain have reached an agreement with head coach Mauricio Pochettino that will see the Argentine leave the club after 18 months in charge.
 The Argentine boss has been in charge for 18 months and led the club to the Ligue 1 title in his first full season, finishing 15 points clear of second-placed Marseille.
Pochettino and PSG chiefs met last week for crunch talks, where they spoke about him leaving the Frech club.
 It was gathered that the conversation produced a mutual decision that the former PSG captain will not continue in the Parc des Princes dugout, with both sides identifying a parting of ways to be the most sensible step.

US to end COVID-19 testing requirement for international travelers

 

 The US will no longer require international travellers to have proof of a negative Covid-19 test before entering the country.
 A senior administration official and a US Centers For Disease Control and Prevention official said they were dropping the requirement due to the "tremendous progress" the country had made in the fight against coronavirus.  The change comes into effect on Sunday, June 12.
 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will re-evaluate the policy in 90 days.

 Shakira and Gerard Pique have split, the Colombian singer and Barcelona star have confirmed.
 The pair, whose relationship began in 2010, have two sons together, Milan and Sasha.
Shakira's communication agency released a statement that reads: "We regret to confirm that we are parting ways. For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect their privacy. Thank you for your understanding."
 It comes after the Barcelona defender was allegedly caught in bed with another woman.

Bangladesh depot fire leaves 30 dead, hundreds injured

 

 A fire and a huge explosion at a storage depot near the city of Chittagong, Bangladesh have killed at least 30 people and injured hundreds more on Sunday, June 5.
Many of the injured are reported to be in a critical condition with burns covering 60% to 90% of their bodies. The cause of the fire is not known, but reports say chemicals were stored in some of the containers. The depot contained millions of dollars of garments waiting to be exported to Western retailers, according to a regional government official. Bangladesh is a major supplier of clothing to the US and Europe.

Monkeypox: Cases outside Africa rise to 780 in three weeks

 

There have been 780 confirmed cases of monkeypox in countries where the virus is not usually found, the World Health Organization says. That is roughly triple the 257 cases it reported a week ago.
It says the figure - for the past three weeks - is probably an underestimate and assesses the global risk level as "moderate".
The infection is usually mild, but this is the first time it has spread widely outside Central and West Africa. The WHO said cases had been identified in 27 countries where it is not already "endemic" - meaning places it is expected to be found.
Most of these new cases are in Europe and North America as well as small numbers in Mexico, Argentina, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates.

Mass shooting at Nigeria church kills dozens

 

 A church in southwestern Nigeria became the site of a bloody attack on Sunday, according to local lawmakers. Attackers stormed into the church in the city of Owo and began "shooting sporadically," Adeyemi Olayemi, the legislator representing the Owo constituency in the Ondo State House of Assembly, told CNN. At least 28 people were killed, Olayemi said.
"The attackers came in motorcycles and started shooting sporadically," he said. "They killed many people inside the church."
Victims are being are taken to Federal Medical Center in Owo, Olayemi said.
State police could not confirm the total number of casualties at St. Francis Catholic Church, a police spokesperson told CNN, nor could they identify those behind the attack.

 Tevez revealed he had turned down offers to prolong his career in the United States and decided to officially bring his time in football to a close at the age of 38.
The Argentinian, who won three Premier League titles, two Scudetti, and the Champions League, last played for Boca Juniors before leaving his boyhood club in June last year.
 Tevez said he had stopped playing after 'losing his number one fan' - his adopted father, Segundo Raimundo, who died following complications from Covid-19.

Scott Morrison conceded defeat on Saturday, making way for his successor Anthony Albanese, leader of the Australian Labor Party.
Scott Morrison has also decided to step down as leader of the Liberal Party of Australia. This means a new Leader of Opposition will be elected.
"To my colleagues tonight, who have had to deal with very difficult news, and have lost their seats tonight, I as leader take responsibility for the wins and the losses. That is the burden and that is the responsibility of leadership," Scott Morrison said.

 Mali have replaced Nigeria at the 2022 Women's Basketball World Cup set to be played in Australia in September and October. The sport's world governing body, Fiba, announced the move after the Nigerian government's decision in May to withdraw from international basketball for two years.
Fiba added it will announce whether there will be any other decisions related to the Nigeria Basketball Federation's participation in other Fiba competitions and any potential disciplinary measures in due course.
Those measures look set to involve the men's team and whether they will take part in the ongoing African qualifiers for the 2023 World Cup, which are due to continue in July in Rwanda.

Vandals loot graves in Mozambique for scrap metal

 

 Residents of Beira city in the central Mozambican province of Sofala have called for protection of local cemeteries amid reports of vandalism of graves.
At the Mangalane cemetery, more than 50 graves have been vandalised in the past month. The criminals are removing copper crucifixes and other metallic objects.
The traditional leader responsible for the cemetery, Fernando Jaime, said the acts of desecration have been taking place in broad daylight.

Man breaks into Dallas Museum of Art and damages several artworks, including 2,000-year-old Greek vases

 

Several ancient works of art at the Dallas Museum of Art, including Greek vessels crafted thousands of years ago, were damaged by an intruder Wednesday night.
"June 1, after Museum hours, an individual forcibly entered the Dallas Museum of Art," the museum said in a statement.
"Museum security responded immediately and Dallas Police took the individual into custody at the scene."
CNN did not receive a response to a request for comment from the Dallas Police Department.
In a statement shared with CNN, museum director Agustin Arteaga said the intruder was unarmed and no one was harmed in the incident. However, three ceramic Greek vessels and one Native American contemporary ceramic piece were "seriously damaged," said Arteaga. And fewer than a dozen smaller pieces in the same glass case may have "suffered minor damages."

Kenyan police kill three at protests over wildlife attacks

 

 At least three people were shot dead after a team from the Kenyan paramilitary police (the GSU) opened fire on a crowd that was on the country's main highway protesting over attacks on humans by wildlife.
The protesters in Masimba, south-east of Nairobi had on Thursday blocked the main highway connecting the capital to the coastal city of Mombasa for hours.
Local county Governor Joseph Ole Lenku said "communities are getting frustrated by the loss of human lives to wildlife" in the area, which borders a national park.

Putin threatens to strike 'new targets' if US continues supplying long range missiles to Ukraine

 


 Russian President, Vladimir Putin has threatened to strike 'new targets' if the US supplied long-range missiles to Ukraine, according to Russian state media.   
According to Putin, delivering new arms to Kyiv only aims to “drag out the armed conflict for as long as possible,” Putin said in an interview to Rossiya-1 TV channel, Russian state media TASS reported on Sunday, June 5.
He said when it comes to Western deliveries of long-range missiles to Kyiv, Russia will draw "appropriate conclusions" and strike those “facilities” that it has not yet targeted, he said.  

Elon Musk declares end to remote working at Tesla

 

 Tesla boss Elon Musk has ordered staff to return to the office full-time, declaring that working remotely is no longer acceptable. The new policy was shared in emails that were leaked to social media.
Tesla did not respond to a request for comment on the messages, one of which appeared to be addressed to executives.
People who are unwilling to abide by the new rules can "pretend to work somewhere else" Mr Musk said on Twitter, when asked about the policy.
"Everyone at Tesla is required to spend a minimum of 40 hours in the office per week," he wrote in one of the emails. "If you don't show up, we will assume you have resigned."
The emails said staff should report to work at one of the company's main offices, "not a remote branch office unrelated to the job duties".

China launches third crewed mission to new space station

 

 China successfully launched another manned mission to its new space station on Sunday, sending three astronauts who will continue construction work for six months, China's Manned Space Agency (CMSA) announced.
The astronauts lifted off on the Shenzhou-14 spacecraft at 10:44 a.m. local time, launched by a Long March 2F rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert, Inner Mongolia.
The team will live and work at the Tiangong Space Station's Tianhe core module for six months before returning to Earth in December. Tiangong means Heavenly Palace.
The crew includes Chen Dong, Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe, who are expected to dock with the space station about 6.5 hours after launch.

French Open: Rafael Nadal beats Casper Ruud to win his 14th title at Roland Garros

 

 Rafael Nadal won his 14th French Open title and record-extending 22nd Grand Slam after beating Casper Ruud at Roland Garros on Sunday, June 5.
The 36-year-old Spanish sports star dismantled the Norwegian 6-3 6-3 6-0 on Court Philippe Chatrier.
Nadal, has lost only three times at Roland Garros sincehis debut in 2005, (hence his tag as the king of clay court). He has been battling with injuries, so before the game the media was rife with rumours of retirement.
 But he emphatically strolled past Ruud in their first competitive meeting to take him two titles ahead of great rivals Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

Mariah Carey sued for £16 million for copyright infringement over All I Want For Christmas Is You

 


Mariah Carey is being sued over her iconic hit holiday song All I Want For Christmas Is You for copyright infringement. Artiste, Andy Stone, filed a lawsuit against the five-time Grammy winner, claiming copyright infringement 28 years after she released the Christmas jingle in 1994, according to TMZ.
Mariah Carey and her co-writer Walter Afansieff are both named in the lawsuit, which is being brought by songwriter Andy Stone.
 The song was released by Carey in 1994 as part of her album Merry Christmas and has gone on to be recognised as one of the most well-known festive hits.

24-year-old woman set to marry herself in India's first sologamy

 

 A 24-year-old Indian woman, Kshama Bindu, is set to marry herself in what is said to be India's first solo wedding, or sologamy.
 The woman from Vadodara in Gujarat will tie the knot with herself on June 11, 2022, and the wedding will feature everything...from the 'pheras' and wedding vows to a honeymoon but won't have a groom or 'baraat'.
"I never wanted to get married. But I did want to become a bride. So I decided to marry myself,” Kshama told TimesofIndia
 According to TOI, she did some online research to find out if any woman has married herself in the country, but couldn’t find any.
