Two trainee doctors in Mexico are sacked after posing with an amputated leg

Two trainee doctors with Clinica 25 in Monterrey, Mexico found themselves in hot water no thanks to their indiscretion and breach of professional ethics. One of the interns, named locally as Carolina Dominguez Garcia, 24, posted a photo of the pair with an amputated leg on Twitter alongside the message:'My first leg dad. Sorry if these images upset you.'
In reaction, authorities asked them to leave the clinic where they were based and announced they will lodge a formal complaint with the courts. Mikel Arriola, Director of the Mexican Social Security Institute, who announced their dismissal said: 'Because of two interns who posted an inappropriate photo on social media, we're not going to stop recognising that the 12,000 trainees with the Institute are a great source of pride.'

China reports six new bird flu cases

China reported six new cases of H7N9 bird flu including one death in Hunan after live poultry markets in the province were shuttered last month. The infections were reported in the last week of March by the provincial center for disease control and prevention, according to a report by Xinhua news agency on Sunday. A total ban on live poultry trading in the provincial capital of Changsha has been in effect since March 17 and will continue for another five days, the agency said.
In March authorities reported an outbreak of the virus in the province originating from a farm with about 29,760 infected birds. Over 170,000 birds were culled as a result. The number of human infections this season has surged to the highest level since 2009. At least 162 deaths have been reported since October. Health authorities said that cold and wet weather in Hunan played a role in the recent spread of the virus.

Creator of the LGBT community flag, Gilbert Baker dies at 65

Gilbert Baker, the designer of the iconic rainbow flag, has died. Cleve Jones, an AIDS activist and Baker's longtime friend confirms that he died in his sleep on Thursday, March 30, 2017 in New York.In 1978, Baker sewed a multicolored flag that became the symbol of the LGBT community across the world.
A vigil in Baker's memory was held on Friday evening under the rainbow flag in San Francisco's United Nations Plaza.The banner could be seen flying half-staff from the balcony of Mayor Ed Lee who said:

Father and son keep daughter locked up in tiny room for 16 years as punishment for getting pregnant

A woman was rescued after being locked up for 16 years. The woman was suffering cruel punishment at the hands of her father and brother after she became pregnant before her marriage.  Police in Brazil, were tipped off to the situation, and they went to the home, where they found the woman who is now 36 years old. Police said that Maria Lucia de Almeida Braga, has been locked up since she was 20 years old as punishment for becoming pregnant. She was treated like an animal. Braga was placed inside a locked 3x3 meter room with no bathroom, water or electricity. She was left naked and with only a hammock in the room to sleep on. She was fed two times a day.

Prized 1804 U.S. dollar sells for $3.3 million at auction

An 1804 U.S. silver dollar sold for $3.3 million in one of a series of auctions that brought in a record total of more than $100 million for a renowned private coin collection, organizers said on Saturday. The silver dollar, one of only eight of its kind, was snapped up at auction on Friday in Baltimore. It was one of more than 200 coins sold at the event. The collection belonged to Dallas real estate developer Mack Pogue and his son Brent, who had collected coins since the 1970s. The coin is emblazoned with the bust of a woman with flowing hair who represents liberty. Minted by the U.S. government, it was intended as a gift for foreign heads of state.

1. Take a deep breath. That first step into the room can tell you a lot about what you’re going to experience — from the underlying smell of jasmine at a hotel in Bangkok to an establishment who shall remain nameless, as I was back downstairs in under a minute politely explaining to the front desk that my room smelled of urine. If the room is a bit stuffy and you’ve got control of the thermostat but can’t open the window, bumping the heat down to a lower temperature can sometimes get the air started.

2. The toilet and bathtub. If there are random hairs or housekeeping issues, I’d like to have them addressed before coming back to my room after a full day of press interviews or conferences, not when I'm settling in for the night. This is also the time to request more towels, rather than later on when you’ve already changed and the night staff has to make a special, and possibly delayed, trip.

Pakistan shrine custodian kills 20 in apparent cult ritual

The custodian of a local shrine and his accomplices murdered 20 devotees after intoxicating them in eastern Punjab province, police said Sunday, in what officials are calling a cult ritual. Senior police officer Mohammad Bilal said that the shrine custodian in a village near the city of Sargodha, some 320 kilometers (200 miles) north of Multan, was arrested Sunday morning along with four others for killing worshippers with batons and knives. Bilal said another four people remain wounded in critical condition. A Doctor at Sargodha hospital, told the Geo TV channel, that the victims were murdered nude and the bodies bore multiple stab wounds and blunt weapons marks.

Colombia mudslides kill 206, sweep away homes

Mudslides killed at least 206 people and left hundreds injured or missing after destroying homes in southern Colombia, officials said Saturday. They were the latest victims of floods that have struck the Pacific side of South America over recent months, also killing scores of people in Peru and Ecuador. In the southwestern Colombian town of Mocoa, the surge swept away houses, bridges, vehicles and trees, leaving piles of wrecked timber and brown mud, army images from the area showed. The mudslides struck late Friday after days of torrential rain in the Amazon basin area town of 40,000.
"The latest information we have is that there are 206 people confirmed dead, 202 injured, 220 missing, 17 neighborhoods hit hard," Colombian Red Cross chief Cesar Uruena told AFP.

Former ‘Power Ranger’ actor, Ricardo Medina sentenced to 6 years in prison for manslaughter

Former 'Power Ranger' star actor, Ricardo Medina Jr. was sentenced to six years in state prison for the stabbing to death of Josh Sutter, Late Sutter was identified as Medina’s roommate by the LA County DA’s Office, though Medina’s attorney reportedly said the two were just friends, not roommates. Medina Jr. pleaded guilty earlier this month to one felony count of voluntary manslaughter and admitted to stabbing Sutter with a sword. Six years was the maximum sentence.

Atlanta: State of emergency declared as major interstate bridge collapses after huge fire

State of emergency declared as officials say no indication when Interstate 85, which carries 250,000 vehicles a day, can reopen. Three people have been arrested after an elevated section of a major north-south highway in the south-east of the US collapsed in a massive fire. Atlanta’s notoriously tangled commutes were thrown into disarray when a bridge on Interstate 85 collapsed after a fire burned for more than an hour under the northbound lanes, shutting down the busy highway through the heart of the city during rush hour on Thursday afternoon. Georgia’s deputy insurance commissioner Jay Florence confirmed the suspects were arrested on Friday. He identified them as Basil Eleby, Sophia Bruner and Barry Thomas. Eleby faces a charge of criminal damage to property, while Bruner and Thomas each was charged with criminal trespass. All three were being held at the Fulton County jail.

Intel suggests terrorists got airport screening equipment to test concealing bombs

United States intelligence suggests terrorists have obtained airport security screening equipment to test the effectiveness of their ability to conceal explosives in laptops and other electronic devices, ABC News has confirmed according to two sources familiar with the matter.  CNN first reported that intelligence suggested the screening equipment had fallen into the hands of terrorists.  Last week, ABC News reported that new restrictions for electronics on certain U.S. bound flights were based on new intelligence that radicals associated with ISIS are actively working on developing ways to smuggle bombs onto commercial airliners.
ABC News first reported that ISIS had developed creative new bombs built into electronic devices which could be smuggled aboard commercial airliners. Last week, law enforcement and intelligence officials tested the bombs, found them to be viable and then sent teams to the airports to see if they could be smuggled through. The threat led to the electronics restrictions.  The use of screening equipment is the latest evolution of a threat in which Al Qaeda of the Arabian Peninsula shared its bomb-making expertise with Khorasan Group, an organization of terrorists in Syria, and other al-Qaeda associates in both Syria and Iraq; and now with ISIS.

Tens of thousands told to flee as floods swamp Australian town

Floodwaters filled the streets of a major Australian town of more than 25,000 people on Friday, as a storm system generated by the powerful cyclone that pummeled the nation's northeast three days ago swept down the coast with heavy rain. Cyclone Debbie hit as a Category Four storm in the north of tropical Queensland state on Tuesday, smashing tourist resorts, bringing down power lines, flattening canefields and shutting down coal mines. Authorities on Friday told almost 20,000 people to evacuate to higher ground as driving rain in hinterland and coastal areas either side of the Queensland state capital, Brisbane, swelled rivers to record heights across the region.
"We have everything happening, we've got people on rooftops, we've had people stuck in vans, it's a disaster, an utter disaster," New South Wales State Emergency Services Controller Ian Leckie told Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio.

UK surgeon rapes mother of patient he treated, tells her you owe me for making your child well

One of Britain's top heart surgeons raped a woman in his office after telling her 'you owe me' for helping her sick child, a court heard. The alleged victim told how 53-year-old Mohamed Amrani was still in his scrubs as he forced his tongue in her mouth and kissed her neck and ears. She told jurors how the consultant surgeon then stripped her naked and said 'I'm going to f*** you,' then sexually assaulted her. The alleged victim, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, is one of four women he is said to have attacked during a campaign of 'sexual bullying' at the hospital between 2001 and 2014.
When she begged him 'please don't do that', Amrani turned her around and said he was going to have sex with her from behind, the Old Bailey heard. He then sat her down on the sofa in his office at Harefield Hospital in Hillingdon, west London and forced her to perform a sex act, jurors were told.

The man swallowed whole by a 23-foot python in Indonesia earlier this week has been identified as Akbar Bin Ramil Salubriong. Akbar, 25, was trying to harvest palm oil so he could provide for his wife and two children when the python swallowed him, the Tribune Timur reports. Akbar’s death went viral on Wednesday, after footage of villagers slicing open the cold-blooded killer emerged online(You can read the story here).
Villagers in Central Mamuju Regency told the outlet that the young man was planning on using the money from his farming to relocate his family from a nearby town where they had been staying. His wife, Muna, had gone to the town to give birth to their second child.  The discovery of Akbar on Wednesday has left locals in the area in fear for their lives especially since this is the time of year when they are working around snakes’ terrain the most, according to the Jakarta Post. Junaedi said the last time a reticulated python as large as the one that attacked Akbar was seen in the area was back in the 1990s. That sighting would have come as area forests, the serpent’s natural hunting grounds, first began to be transformed into palm-oil plantations.

Paraguayans set congress ablaze to protest re-election measure

Protesters stormed Paraguay’s congress on Friday and set it on fire after senators approved a surprise measure that would allow presidents of the South American nation to be re-elected. Demonstrations began at the downtown congressional building earlier in the day after news of the vote. Protesters clashed with security forces, who responded with rubber bullets and water hoses in an unsuccessful bid to prevent them from entering the congressional building. Late Friday, the fire had been isolated to one part of the structure but continued to burn.
Paraguay’s lower house is scheduled to hold an extraordinary session Saturday to vote on the Senate’s bill to allow re-election. Lawmakers said on local television that while they are legally required to meet because of legislative protocol, the re-election measure won’t be discussed. In an emailed statement, President Horacio Cartes called for calm and said the fire at congress was “the work of those who want to destroy democracy.”

Nursing home employee secretly records seniors having sex, posts video to Snapchat

A nursing home employee, 20-year-old Alexis Williams, an employee at the Bristol Court Assisted Living Facility on 3479 54th Avenue North in unincorporated St. Petersburg in Florida is in police custody Wednesday after detectives say she filmed two senior residents having sex without their knowledge or consent and shared the video with her followers on Snapchat in August of last year. The victims, who haven’t been identified are an 81-year-old woman and a 59-year-old man. Detectives say Williams was working at the facility when she saw the seniors having sex in a private room and secretly recorded them and later posted the video to Snapchat.
One of her followers saw the video on Snapchat and reported it to the staff at the facility who contacted the authorities and terminated Williams immediately. Williams confessed her crimes on Wednesday when she was interviewed by Pinellas County detectives at her home in St. Petersburg . She was arrested and charged with one count of video voyeurism and one count of video voyeurism dissemination and has since been released on a $10,000.

Brazil ex-speaker jailed for 15 years

A federal court sentenced Brazil's former speaker of the lower house, Eduardo Cunha, to more than 15 years in prison for corruption, making him the highest-profile political conviction yet in the "Operation Car Wash" scandal. The former politician's defense team said they would appeal the decision but Cunha will remain imprisoned pending appeal.
Cunha, who drove the successful impeachment of former President Dilma Rousseff, was forced from his position as speaker in July and arrested in October on accusations he received millions in bribes from the purchase of an oil field in Benin by state-run oil company Petrobras.
Over 200 people have been charged in the "Operation Car Wash" probe, a far-reaching investigation that centers on bribes and political kickbacks from contracts at Petrobras. The Supreme Court is likely to approve soon the investigation of dozens of sitting politicians.

Father jailed nine years for impregnating daughter

A man, Taiwo Olubayode, has been sentenced to nine years imprisonment with hard labour and without an option of fine by a Family Court sitting at Oke-Eda, Akure, the Ondo State capital, Nigeria. The 56-year-old man was convicted for impregnating his 16-year-old daughter (name withheld) at Oke-Ijebu street, Odode- Idanre in Idanre Local Government Area of the state which is also in the Akure Magisterial District. The convict, who was brought before the court by Nigeria Security And Civil Defence Corps, was charged on one count of having incestuous behaviour with a 16-year-old girl.

Chinese Muslims are banned from having abnormal beards & veils to curb extremism

China has announced that it is implementing new measures including a ban on 'abnormal' beards in its heavily Muslim region of Xinjiang. Veils have also been banned in public places along with refusing to watch or listen to state media, as part of the new 'Regulations on Extremisation of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.' China claims that the legal, cultural and religious rights of Muslims in Xinjiang are fully protected. However many Muslim Uighur people resent increasing restrictions on their culture and religion and complain they are denied economic opportunities amid an influx of Han Chinese into the province.
