Neymar steps down as Brazil captain after Olympic gold

Brazil hero Neymar has stepped down as captain of the national side after firing them to Olympic gold in remarkable fashion on Saturday night. At their home Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil won the gold medal match against Germany after Neymar struck a 25-yard free-kick and then slotted home the winning penalty in a shoot-out.
Admitting after the game that it doesn't get much better than that, the 24-year-old told Brazilian media:
'Today I stop being a captain. I will send a message to Tite [Brazil's coach] that from now he can look for another captain. Today I have become a champion and I give up the captain's armband. It was something I received and honoured with affection.'

Surgeons remove 40 knives from Indian man's stomach

Surgeons have removed 40 metal knives from a patient who spent two months swallowing them, according to the doctor who led the operation. The unnamed 42-year-old man, who had an 'uncontrollable urge' to eat the knives, went to a hospital in Gurdaspur in Northern India after complaining of stomach pain and weakness. Only after a ultrasound revealed a large mass in his stomach, did the man tell doctors he had swallowed knives.
"He had a wild urge to consume metal. Even for us, the experienced surgeons, it was frightening," Dr. Jatinder Malhotra told CNN.

3 German tourists killed by falling mast

Police say three German tourists have died after a ship's mast broke and fell on them in a northern Dutch port. Friesland provincial police say in a tweet that investigations are underway to establish exactly how the mast broke on Sunday when the ship was near the port town of Harlingen, some 110 kilometers (68 miles) north of Amsterdam. Police say the victims, whose identities were not immediately released, were part of a family group of 12 Germans on the ship. Speaking to Hart van Nederland news show, Harlingen mayor Roel Sluiter called the incident "a terribly tragic accident."

Zuckerberg sells $95m in Facebook shares to make good philanthropist promise

Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg has made his first big share sale to fund his family's philanthropic initiative.  The sale of more than 760 000 shares of Facebook stock, valued at about $95m, was made by Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Holdings and the Chan Zuckerberg Foundation, according to a regulatory filing on Friday. The price of the shares ranged from $122.85 to $124.31. It will be the first of many sales in Zuckerberg's plan to fund solutions for problems in health, science and education. After the birth of his daughter Maxima, Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan pledged to give away 99% of their wealth during their lifetime.
At the time, the December pledge was worth about $45bn. Since then, Facebook stock has gained more than 15%. Zuckerberg's latest philanthropic initiative comes as Wealth-X, a company that conducts research on the ultra-wealthy, shows that the primary passion of the world's billionaires is philanthropic activities, followed by travel and art.

Brazil beats Germany on penalties to win football gold

Neymar scored the winning penalty as hosts Brazil beat Germany 5-4 on penalties in Rio to win their first men's Olympic football gold medal. The game finished 1-1 after extra time, with Neymar's first-half free-kick cancelled out by Max Meyer's strike. In the shootout, Germany's Nils Petersen had his penalty saved by Weverton before Neymar won it. It comes two years after Germany thrashed Brazil 7-1 in the 2014 World Cup semi-finals in Belo Horizonte.

Nigeria defeats Honduras to win men's football bronze

Nigeria wins its first medal as under 23 team beats Honduras 3-2 to win the Bronze medal. Nigeria, the 1996 Olympic football champions, are now the first African country to complete an Olympic medal sweep having won a sliver medal in Beijing in 2008.
The Dream Team VI held off their opponents' late rally to win the country's first medal of the Rio games. Victory gave Nigeria - beaten by Germany in the semi-finals - their place in history, by winning all three men's football Olympic medals. At Atlanta in 1996, they became the first African team to win the gold medal. They also finished runners-up at the 2008 Beijing Olympics to take silver, where current under-23 coach Samson Siasia also coached the 'Dream Team' in China.

As if the site of floodwaters ripping through communities in southern Louisiana wasn’t eerie enough, the high waters have begun lifting graves from their final resting places. The flood appears to have dislodged the above-ground grave coverings at many of the region’s cemeteries, sending the enclosed caskets floating. Because of Louisiana’s swampy terrain, above-ground tombs are favored so as to keep caskets from popping out of the earth when heavy rains saturate the soil. But even the above-ground system was no match for a flood this intense.
Following rains that started last week, the floods have killed at least 13 people and damaged about 40,000 homes in the state. The American Red Cross has billed the flooding as the worst disaster to hit the U.S. since Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Baby girl born on Cebu Pacific airplane gets 1 million air miles

After being born four hours into a flight from Dubai to Manila, baby girl Haven has been gifted 1 million air mile points. Haven's mom went into labor more than five weeks early while flying on an aircraft operated by Philippines carrier Cebu Pacific on August 14. Two nurses among the plane's passengers helped with the delivery alongside cabin crew as the pilot diverted to Hyderabad, India to seek further medical assistance. The budget airline said it's the first time a baby has been born on one of its aircraft. Airline CEO Lance Gokongwei said Haven would be awarded one million points on the airline's GetGo rewards program to celebrate the birth. The points have no expiry date and can be shared with her family.

30 reported dead and 94 injured in Turkey wedding bombing

At least 30 people were killed and 94 others were injured Saturday when a bomb exploded at an outdoor wedding in southern Turkey, the provincial governor's office said. Gaziantep Province Gov. Ali Yerlikaya said the blast during the wedding in the city of Gaziantep, near the border with Syria, was a terror attack. A brief statement from the governor's office said the explosion in the Sahinbey district occurred at 10:50 p.m. (3:50 p.m. ET) The statement condemned the "treacherous" attack, but did not provide further details. Mehmet Tascioglu, a local journalist, told NTV television that the huge explosion could be heard in many parts of the city.

Rio mishap: French athlete poos on himself during race

As the Rio Olympics is drawing to an end, many participants will be remembered for different reasons. A French athlete battled through an extremely sticky situation after he suffered the unfortunate agony of pooing on himself 15km into the men’s Olympic 50km walking race. Yohann Diniz’s plight was caught on camera with brown stains running down the back of his legs after soiling his pants midway through the contest. World champion Matej Toth of Slovakia, eventually won the race ahead of London 2012 gold medallist, Jared Tallent of Australia in second and Japan’s Hirooki Arai bronze.

US swimmer Ryan Lochte apologises for giving a false report about Rio robbery

Ryan Lochte, the disgraced American swimmer, has apologised for his behaviour and for not being more honest in how he described what happened during an early morning ruccus at a service station. In a post on Instagram, he said: I want to apologise for my behaviour last weekend - for not being more careful and candid in how I described the events of that early morning and for my role in taking the focus away from the many athletes fulfilling their dreams of participating in the Olympics."
It comes hours after American Olympic authorities have sought to draw a line under the "Rio robbery" controversy - issuing an apology to Brazil and arranging for one of the swimmers involved to make a $10,800 payment by means of reparations. American officials have also said the men’s behaviour was not acceptable.

Video of woman who stabbed her cheating husband on the street goes viral

An angry wife stabbed her 'cheating' husband in the middle of the street - leaving him completely soaked in blood.  According to a clip posted by Daily Record, the man was seen sitting in the middle of the road in a blood-soaked shirt and after yelling at each other for several moments , the man dragged himself to his feet and tried to walk away. But, the woman followed him before stabbed a knife into his torso.
The man who was heard yelling out in pain, stumbled away, clutching his side, before the clip suddenly cuts off. It is not known what happened after.

Usain Bolt makes history as he wins ninth Olympic gold

Usain Bolt ended his Olympic career by claiming an unprecedented 'triple triple' and his ninth gold as Jamaica won the 4x100m relay final in Rio. Bolt, 29, had won the 100m and 200m in Rio and is the only man to win all three sprint events at three Games. He combined with Asafa Powell, Yohan Blake and Nickel Ashmeade to lift gold in a time of 37.27 seconds.
"There you go, I'm the greatest," said Bolt, who has won gold in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay at the last three Games.
He intends to retire after the 2017 World Championships in London and will not compete at Tokyo 2020, at which point he will be nearly 34. Bolt's haul of nine golds is the joint highest among Olympic athletics. He is now equal with USA sprinter and long jumper Carl Lewis, who won nine golds over four Games, and Finnish long-distance runner Paavo Nurmi.

Twitter suspends 235,000 accounts over Terrorism

Twitter has suspended 235,000 accounts that promoted terrorism over the last six months, as part of a continuing effort to keep people from using the social network for extremist causes.
 “The world has witnessed a further wave of deadly, abhorrent terror attacks across the globe,” Twitter said in a statement. “We strongly condemn these acts and remain committed to eliminating the promotion of violence or terrorism on our platform.”
Twitter’s latest action brings the total number of accounts that the company has suspended to 360,000 since it began cracking down on terrorism and violent extremism in mid-2015.

While, in isolation, bogies might be the source of much amusement, picking your nose is something we can all agree is 'frowned upon'. As a child , you probably had your hand swatted away by a parent as you furtively tried to have a good pick. It's not uncommon to see children have a good nasal root around, but by the time we reach adulthood, the understanding is that we've grown out of it (or have become better at doing it in private). There's no official figure on how many adults occasionally have a quick pick, but our estimation would be '99 per cent of them'.

This gorilla has lived with this couple for 18 years!

When Pierre and Eliane Thivillon adopted Digit the gorilla, she weighed just four pounds and six ounces. But you would struggle to get her on to the scales now, with the huge primate eclipsing her two owners. Despite her size, Digit is still a softie and remarkably has lived with the couple nearly all of her life. While she has learned to become more independent, the gorilla still occasionally relies on her adoptive human parents to help pick food out of her teeth or pull a splinter out of her hand, Mr Thivillion says. And until she was a teenager by which time she weighed nearly 13 stone Digit would try to share the bed with her owners, who live in hills west of Lyon, France.

US widens travel warning in Florida's Miami as more Zika virus cases recorded

US health officials have warned pregnant women to avoid Florida's Miami Beach area after receiving confirmation that the Zika virus is active in the international tourist destination. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday said that pregnant women who are especially worried about exposure to Zika might also consider avoiding all of Miami-Dade County. The virus generally causes mild symptoms in adults, but can cause severe birth defects in the children of pregnant women who become infected with the virus. Rick Scott, governor of Florida, said state health officials have identified five cases of Zika believed to have been contracted in Miami Beach.
"This means we believe we have a new area where local transmissions are occurring in Miami Beach," he said, noting that Florida had already stepped up pesticide-spraying efforts in this area.
"All three of these people travelled to Miami," Scott said.
