Thousands of dead fish have washed up Tianjin’s Haihe River, causing crowds to gather to see the grim and unnerving scene. The dead fish were found a few miles from the scene of the deadly explosion of a chemical warehouse that rocked the northern Chinese port city of Tijiani, leaving at least 114 people dead, many more injured and about 70 people still missing.

It is believed that he warehouse that stored at least 2,500 tons of hazardous chemicals may have leaked into the river. However, Chinese officials have denied that the fish deaths are linked to the blasts. Weeks after the explosion, The Guardian reports that the military team are still struggling to decontaminate the blast site.
Meanwhile, a mysterious foam-like substance has been spotted in the streets, leading to local people expressing fears over their surroundings. People are frightened that rainfall may have brought a chemical residue to their streets, resulting in the unusual remainder being left behind. The local government, under pressure from China's leaders in Beijing to improve industrial safety, also said it would relocate chemical plants away from the area, where thousands of residents were forced to evacuate last week.

Deng Xiaowen, head of Tianjin’s environment monitoring center, said the agency would launch an investigation into the fish deaths. He maintained, however, that “it was not uncommon for fish to die en mass in local rivers during summer, due to poor water quality”.
