22-year-old Jordan convicted of manslaughter for the death of his son |
Jordan Saxton, 22, was unanimously convicted of manslaughter, after his son, 11-week-old Jayden suffered a brain injury by him. Jayden was reported to have been shaken so violently by his dad, doctors found 18 bones fractures on his tiny body.
The jury heard that the 22-year-old man had been left alone with baby Jayden for just 90 minutes when he gripped his son's chest and shook him causing a 'catastrophic' brain injury. Damage to blood vessels in the baby's eyes also left it blinded in the attack. The verdict was announced after just six hours of deliberation following a 10-day trial at Oxford Crown Court. Saxton, sporting a blue shirt and tie, sobbed in the dock as the verdicts were read out.

The court heard that baby Jayden was left with 18 fractures to his tiny body as well brain injuries on November 16, 2014, when the violence occurred. He had eight fractures to his legs, a number of broken ribs and had a severe brain injury when he was taken to hospital later that day. Medics at the two-week trial told the court the injuries would have required 'considerable force,' similar to that of a high speed car crash.
Throughout the trial Saxton maintained his innocence and said he had been feeding his son at their home when he began to choke and stopped breathing. However, witness statements by doctors and paramedics could find no evidence of choking or food caught in his throat.
Prosecuter Paul Dunkels said: 'You thought you could explain away his (Jayden's) collapse by saying he was suddenly choking on something, but you know now that he hadn't choked, he had been assaulted.
'The inescapable truth Mr Saxton, on all the evidence, is that it must have been you.
'No doubt in an act of frustration with him because he would not settle, you gripped him forcibly around the chest and shook him,' Mr Dunkels said.

Saxton, of Wingate Close, Oxford, was arrested following a four-month investigation into the death of his son and was charged with murder. He was said to have dialled 999 after Jayden stopped breathing, claiming he had been trying to feed him whilst lying on his bed at home.
'Medical examinations established he was a healthy baby and had no underlying medical condition which caused the bruising or injuries.'
The jury of six men and six women were also shown 16 pictures of the baby's shocking injuries.
Giving evidence the mother-of-two said Saxton cheated on her while she was pregnant but was a 'changed man' who doted on his first-born son. After discovering his indiscretions she had decided she no longer wanted to have the baby and planned to have an abortion.
However, after seeing a baby scan at about eight weeks into her pregnancy, she changed her mind and decided to keep the baby.
Mr Justice Singh concluded: 'A doctor has given evidence that considerable force would be needed to fracture an 11-week-old baby. Their ribs are strong. To break them would take a road accident or falling on concrete. It is a force similar to that of a high speed car crash.'
