Feminist group applauds nightclub for decorating Christmas tree with tampons to help revellers through festive 'period'

The Camel Club in Huddersfield

The festive spruce at the Camel Club in Huddersfield has been decorated with tampons - and dubbed the ‘Sani-tree’. An accompanying sign reads “helping you through the festive period.” A feminist group has applauded a club’s initiative saying the tree helps to “normalise a part of nature that is often presented as vulgar and offensive”. The group also said it makes light of the recent tampon tax controversy where the Government eventually agreed to try to scrap VAT to sanitary towels, reports the Huddersfield Examiner.

Drama graduate Bethany Givvons-Collinge, a member of the University of Huddersfield’s Feminist Society, said: “As a feminist, I personally love the idea of this.
“Far from being sexist or degrading, I feel this festive pun actually helps to normalise periods and remove some of the stigma attached to them.
“I’ve been made to feel embarrassed and, to some degree, ashamed of my period, smuggling sanitary products to school toilets or feeling awkward when buying them from a male cashier.
“By portraying periods in this light-hearted manner, the harmless word-play of Camel Club’s ‘Sani-Tree’ actually works towards normalising menstruation and dismantling the negativity associated with periods.”
Bethany added: “My only concern now is finding a bag that will allow me to steal enough tampons to keep the cost of my ‘Christmas period’ down!”
