Young entrepreneur makes £1,000 a week from personalized potato business

Adrian's potato business is booming so much, he gave up his job

Entrepreneur Adrian Nantchev, 22, hit on the bright idea of a personalized message service – with notes written on potatoes – and it’s making him £1,000 a week. He claims to have earned more than £12,000 in three months since launching his business. Adrian, from Wolverhampton, came up with the idea after reading about a similar venture in the US. He has been inundated with orders for the potato messages - which are written on baby Maris Peers.
His Potato in the Post business sends around 30 potatoes out in the post every day - each costing up to £5.99. It has become such a hit that he has given up his job as a computer games tester to post potatoes full time.

Adrian claims to post about 30 potato messages a day

Adrian said: “The whole idea came about as a bit of an accident.
“When I came across a similar potato posting business in America - I thought, why not try to make a go of it in the UK.
“People must be bored of receiving cards in the post all the time - a potato is a lot more exciting.
“Some of the messages I get are hilarious, one I recently received was ‘You got any plans for fry-day?’.
“Others send birthday wishes. It’s all very light hearted.”
The messages are scrawled in marker pen on the potatoes - which are then put in envelopes and posted.
Adrian added: “Business is booming. People absolutely love the idea, and it's all about the element of surprise.
“Why would you want a boring card through the letterbox, when you can get a personalised potato in the post?
“I would eventually like to have my own office, with staff all helping me to write messages on the potatoes.
“This can only get bigger, everyone loves receiving a potato in the post, and the reaction so far has been phenomenal.
“Working with potatoes all day hasn’t put me off them, and if anything, I think they are now my favourite vegetable.”
