91-year-old museum visitor fills in crossword, only to discover it's actually a £67,000 artwork!
A pensioner who visited a museum stunned staff when she took out a pen and filled in one of the works of art on display - because it was a CROSSWORD PUZZLE. The unnamed woman, who is 91, was looking at an avante-garde 1977 work called 'Reading-work-piece'. The piece, which is on loan to the museum, is said to be worth around €80,000, or £67,000. Painted by Arthur Köpcke, it looks like a crossword with blanks left for letters - and includes the text "insert words".
Seeing the English-language instructions, the visitor to Nuremberg's Neues Museum - part of a senior citizens group - said she understood them and thought it was an invitation, reports Süddeutsche Zeitung . She reportedly added that the museum should specify if they did not wish people to fill in the crossword. Although the museum and police do not suspect any malice in her actions, an investigation was launched for insurance purposes.
The museum reportedly also displays interactive pieces, says Gerlinde Knopp, who was leading the excursion, which may have contributed to her confusion.
