Ghana: 9 killed in stampede during Ramadan celebration
Authorities in Ghana say nine people are dead after a stampede during an Eid celebration to mark the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Nyamekye Adane-Ameyaw, the police district commander where the deaths occurred early Thursday, said the stampede took place at a community center in a suburb of Kumasi, Ghana's second largest city.
Survivors told police that the stampede happened after the lights went out during a party at the community center and people panicked and tried to leave. Adane-Ameyaw said there had been an apparent dispute between two DJs who were performing at the same time and the lights were turned off to try to calm it. Police said six other people were seriously injured and were receiving medical treatment.
