Toddler shoots himself in motel room while playing with gun belonging to mother’s boyfriend

A 2-year-old boy was rushed to a hospital after shooting himself in a motel room while playing with a gun, according to police in Washington. The Seattle Police Department said that homicide detectives are investigating after the toddler arrived at Harborview Medical Center at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, with a gunshot wound. Harborview Medical Center staff called police to report that a boy was transported to the hospital by his mother and her boyfriend, and that the child was receiving emergency surgery. Fortunately, the child is expected to survive.
The child’s mother and her boyfriend told police that the boy was injured in a motel room in the 8000 block of E. Marginal Way S. Homicide and CSI detectives obtained a warrant and searched the room, where the shooting occurred. After conducting extensive forensic investigation, and interviewing the child’s mother and her boyfriend, detectives believe that the toddler’s injuries were the result of the child handling a loaded handgun. Detectives will be pursuing a felony weapons violation against the mother’s boyfriend. He is a convicted felon and not allowed to possess firearms.
