Study shows one glass of wine a day cuts a woman's chance of conceiving by 18% in a year
One large glass of wine a day slashes a woman’s chance of conceiving, research shows.
Experts believe that too much alcohol interrupts the female natural cycle and may also damage the egg. But they say women can still drink small amounts when trying for a baby as there is no evidence the odd glass hampers fertility. Danish researchers studied 6,120 women from aged 21 to 45 who were trying to conceive, from June 2007 to January 2016. They all completed questionnaires on how often they had alcohol and exactly what they drank.
The results published in the BMJ show that women who had at least a 250ml glass a day – equivalent to 14 servings a week - were 18 per cent less likely to conceive over a year.
Apple ordered to pay fine worth $14.5 Billion by EU
Apple has warned that future investment by multinationals in Europe could be hit after it was ordered to pay a record-breaking €13bn (£11bn) in back taxes to Ireland. The world’s largest company was presented with the huge bill after the European commission ruled that a sweetheart tax deal between Apple and the Irish tax authorities amounted to illegal state aid. The commission said the deal allowed Apple to pay a maximum tax rate of just 1%. In 2014, the tech firm paid tax at just 0.005%. The usual rate of corporation tax in Ireland is 12.5%.
“Member states cannot give tax benefits to selected companies – this is illegal under EU state aid rules,” said the European competition commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, whose investigation of Apple’s complex tax dealings has taken three years.
Saudi Arabia court sentences man to 10 years and 2000 lashes for tweeting he was an atheist
A court in Saudi Arabia has sentenced a man to ten years in prison and 2,000 lashes for expressing his atheism on Twitter. The 28-year-old reportedly refused to repent, insisting what he wrote reflected his beliefs and that he had the right to express them. The hardline Islamic state’s religious police in charge of monitoring social networks found more than 600 tweets denying the existence of God, ridiculing Koranic verses, accusing all prophets of lies and saying their teaching fuelled hostilities. The court also fined him around £4,000.
He was sentenced under a controversial law that defines atheism as “terrorism”.
In 2014 the late King Abdullah issued a string of royal decrees aimed at clamping down on all forms of political dissent and protests that could “harm public order”.
Article one of the new provisions defined terrorism as “calling for atheist thought in any form, or calling into question the fundamentals of the Islamic religion on which this country is based”.
Aero Contractors Airlines suspends scheduled services in Nigeria
Aero Contractors Airlines, Nigeria’s second largest commercial carrier, has announced the suspension of its scheduled services beginning from Thursday September 1, 2016.

The management of the carrier said the airline had faced grave challenges in the past six months which impacted its business and by extension the scheduled services operations.
President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil has been impeached by senate
The Senate on Wednesday impeached Dilma Rousseff, Brazil’s first female president, and removed her from office for the rest of her term, the capstone of a power struggle that has consumed the nation for months and toppled one of the hemisphere’s most powerful political parties. The Senate voted 61 to 20 to convict Ms. Rousseff on charges of manipulating the federal budget in an effort to conceal the nation’s mounting economic problems. But the final removal of Ms. Rousseff, who was suspended in May to face trial, was much more than a judgment of guilt on any charge. It was a verdict on her leadership and the slipping fortunes of Latin America’s largest country.

Suicide bomber attacks Chinese embassy in Kyrgyzstan
A suspected suicide bomber rammed the gates of the Chinese embassy in the Kyrgyz capital Bishek on Tuesday, killing himself and wounding three others, officials said. An Interior Ministry spokesman said the car exploded inside the compound and quoted Deputy Prime Minister Janysh Razakov as describing the blast as “a terrorist act.”
Police, who cordoned off the building and the adjacent area, and the GKNB state security service said they were investigating the incident, which occurred around 1000 local time (0400 GMT). Authorities in Kyrgyzstan, a mostly Muslim former Soviet republic of 6 million people, routinely detain suspected Islamist militants accused of being linked to the Islamic State, which actively recruits from Central Asia.
An anti-Chinese militant group made up of ethnic Uighurs is also active in the region. In 2014, Kyrgyz border guards killed 11 people believed to be members of that group who had illegally crossed the Chinese-Kyrgyz border.

More than 300 wild reindeer have been killed after they were struck by lightning at a nature park in southern Norway. The deaths were linked to a thunderstorm which battered the Hardangervidda region on Friday. Gamekeepers said they had already counted the lightning-charred bodies of 323 reindeer, which a spokesman described as an "unusually high" death toll. Knut Nylend, a spokesman for the Norwegian Nature Inspectorate, said the reindeer probably died in such high numbers because they were standing close to each other.
It is the second time this month that a large group of animals has been struck to death by lightning. On August 25th, 38 sheep died after they were hit by lightning in the Indian district of Kanchipuram.

Man gets 40 years for pouring boiling water on gay couple
A judge sentenced a Georgia man to 40 years in prison Wednesday for throwing scalding water on a gay couple sleeping in an apartment, leaving them with severe burns that required surgery. Jurors deliberated for about 90 minutes before finding Martin Blackwell, 48, guilty of eight counts of aggravated battery and two counts of aggravated assault in the February attack on Anthony Gooden and Marquez Tolbert. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Henry Newkirk said the evidence was overwhelming and that Blackwell had behaved in a soulless and malicious way. He noted that it "takes a long time" for a pot of water to boil.
"You had so many outs where the voice of reason could have taken over," the judge told Blackwell, who had faced up to 80 years in prison.
Prosecutors said it was a vicious, premeditated attack. Tolbert testified that after pouring hot water on them, Blackwell grabbed him as he jumped and screamed in pain and told him: "Get out of my house with all that gay."
Grandma with over 50Kg tumor has life changing surgery
A grandmother with a debilitating growth weighing the same as a baby hippo, has undergone pioneering surgery to remove it. Charlene Branham had been trapped in her home for ten years because of the 112lbs (over 50Kg) mass on her stomach, which hung between her legs. The 40-year-old could barely walk and remained a prisoner in her home, unable to work and relying on her mother Debbie to look after her. But she has been now been given a new lease of life after a surgeon, specializing in large tumors, operated to remove the ginormous growth. Called a penduculated pannus, the condition is caused when abdominal fat becomes distended and hangs down dangerously below the body.
Charlene, from Aurora, Missouri, became so disabled she could barely move and could not find clothes to fit and resorted to wearing a bed sheet like a toga. Desperate for help, Charlene spent years by herself in her bedroom scared of being seen, and her weight soared to 550lbs (250Kg). She first noticed the growth in 2005, but had often got cysts on her skin, so ignored it.

Top court in France overturns burkini ban
France's top administrative court on Friday overturned a ban on burkinis in a Mediterranean beach resort, effectively meaning that towns can no longer issue bans on the swimsuits that have divided the country and brought world attention to its fraught relationship with Muslims. The bans grew increasingly controversial as images circulated online of some Muslim women being ordered to remove body-concealing garments on French Riviera beaches.
Russia Paralympic team banned from Rio games
The head of the International Paralympic Committee said the organisation’s firm anti-doping stance has been vindicated after the court of arbitration for sport dismissed Russia’s appeal against their exclusion from next month’s Paralympic Games in Rio. The president of the IPC, Sir Philip Craven, expressed his satisfaction after a Cas panel found that the decision to suspend the Russian Paralympic Committee on 7 August – as exclusively revealed by the Observer – because of evidence of state-sponsored doping was neither disproportionate nor in violation of procedural rules. He added that he hopes the ban will act as a catalyst for change in Russia.
“We are greatly encouraged that the Cas panel has upheld the IPC governing board’s unanimous decision to hold the Russian Paralympic Committee accountable for its membership responsibilities and obligations,” Craven said. “Today’s decision underlines our strong belief that doping has absolutely no place in Paralympic sport and further improves our ability to ensure fair competition and a level playing field for all Para athletes around the world.”

Speedo cut ties with Ryan Lochte after his false Rio robbery drama
Speedo USA will no longer sponsor Ryan Lochte following revelations that the swimmer fabricated a story about being robbed at gunpoint during the Rio Olympics.
