Groupon shuts down operations in South Africa
The online marketplace for goods and services is winding down its operations in South Africa. In a statement on its website, Groupon SA moved to reassure customers with current vouchers.
“We are sorry to inform you that as of 4 November 2016, Groupon has wound down its operations in South Africa and we are unable to offer you any deals today.
“For our customers, this means we will stop offering deals on our website from tonight. All current vouchers bought will remain valid until the date stated on the voucher. The terms and conditions on the voucher remain the same. For any customers who are uncomfortable with using their voucher, we are offering a cash refund option if they contact us before 30 November 2016,” read the statement.
Groupon SA said customers with queries should contact them directly. “If you need to speak to a member of the team about your Groupon, you can contact us via telephone on 021 201 7100 or email at support@groupon.co.za before 30 November. If you are one of our merchants and require further information, please contact us via telephone on 021 201 7046 or by email at partnersupport@groupon.co.za.”
“We are sorry not to be able to offer you any great deals today but thank you for your interest in Groupon,” the statement concluded.
The business model has drawn criticism. Its aim is to “redefine how small businesses attract and retain customers”‚ by offering online discounted deals. But merchants have complained that deals are often not profitable‚ and that they attract the wrong kind of customer‚ many of whom do not become repeat customers after the discounted deal‚ and do not spend money beyond what they’ve paid for the coupon.
