A teenager admitted to police to killing her own newborn baby and then texting her boyfriend, saying that he had a girl, according to police in Nebraska. Omaha police said that they have arrested 16-year-old Antonia Lopez, after hiding her pregnancy and birth, and killing her healthy baby daughter. In court, Lopez pleaded not guilty to one count of child abuse resulting in death. She was booked into the Douglas County Youth Center, and her bail was set at $500,000.
On Friday around 4:00 a.m., Lopez gave birth to a baby girl, and threw the child out of her window. She then sent text messages to her boyfriend, telling him that “by the way it was a girl.” Police officers who arrived at the scene, found the baby’s grandmother holding the infant and administering CPR in the parking lot.
The baby was taken to the CHI Creighton hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Lopez was also taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation before being booked into jail. Family members told police that they did not know Lopez was pregnant. Lopez has agreed to plead guilty to a lesser charge in juvenile court, guaranteeing her freedom when she turns 18 years old.
The family members of the girl’s father are angry and hurt. They named the dead girl Pearl, after the father’s great great grandmother. They added that the father is in a lot of pain and visits Pearl’s grave site often.*
