Mysterious illness makes woman’s face melt

A woman says her face is melting before her eyes after her body became riddled with abscesses. Samran Janda, 49, started suffering from a genetic illness when she was five years old but her family could not afford proper treatment. Samran's father died and her mother - who cannot read or write - and older sister raised her at their home in the remote Uttaradit province, northern Thailand. They could only afford occasional visits to the doctor and knots continued to spread over her skin while the facial deformity grew uncontrollably.
The illness baffled doctors and it has now melted over her right eye and taken on the appearance of a trunk-like object hanging from her face. Samran - whose hands have also been claimed by the illness - said: "I've had the illness since I was five. It is getting worse on my face.
"We pray for it to go away. I would like to have treatment but we have no money."

Doctors told Samran and her sister Karb, 55, that neurofibromatosis - a spread of non-cancerous bumps on or under the skin - was responsible for the illness. Samran has also suffered muscle wastage in her legs and hands and struggles to leave the family's home. Officials visited the family last week and donated food while local media published the story to help raise funds for her. Samran - who receives the equivalent of £18.50 in state disability allowance - is now hoping to raise money for an operation to remove the growth covering her face.
Her sister, Karb, said: "I want my sister to be treated so people can see her beautiful face again.
"She has suffered since she was very young and our family have never had money to pay for treatment."
