Now players in Football Manager can come out as gay
Openly gay football players have been introduced to a video game for the first time. And the players can even come out to their teammates in Football Manager 2018. Sports Interactive, the studio behind the best-selling management series, confirmed that players testing the game in the beta version had indeed stumbled on this option, The Mirror reports. Studio director Miles Jacobson said that the option was only available to new players, and no real life players could suddenly announce that they are homosexual in the game.
Footballers who have come out as gay in real life, such as LA Galaxy forward Robbie Rogers, are not currently included in the beta version of the game. And limits will be placed on footballers from countries where homosexuality is illegal. Mr Jacobson told the Mirror that the studio were inspired to develop the feature after speaking to people like Hugo Scheckter, the player liaison officer for Southampton who came out in October 2016.
'He gets a lot of credit for this and we did speak to him about this feature before we put it in the game,' said Jacobson.
'We didn't really have a way to do things until we were able to hear the stories directly from people in the sport who have come out.'
In the game, players will be notified if a footballer at their club comes out as gay by a special news item that appears within their in-game inbox.
Mr Jacobson said that he wants the feature to be a positive addition to the ever-evolving game.
