Tiger mauls two children after escaping from circus enclosure as panicked crowds scream in terror

A tiger mauled two children after escaping from a circus enclosure. Screams of terror erupted among panicked crowds at a village fair when the big cat broke out of its cage on Saturday. Two children were scratched by the tiger which briefly ran riot before it was recaptured by handlers. The injured youngsters were taken to hospital but their lives were not believed to be in danger. The pair are now in a stable condition.

Terrifying footage shows hundreds of onlookers gathered around the steel cage, pressing their faces close to the action as the tiger handler prods and pokes the big cat with a stick. According to witnesses, the animal appeared to turn defensive and then aggressive as it was being ordered around by its handler, and it managed to escape the enclosure entirely when it rammed one of the sides and broke it apart. The clip then shows audience members fleeing in different directions as the tiger launches itself towards the crowd.
According to authorities, the tiger was captured a few minutes later.
Footage showed the cat resting in its cage. The accident happened in Hongtong County in China's northern Shanxi Province, where the circus had been invited to perform at a local temple fair. Authorities are now investigating the incident.
