Jerusalem Governor seal |
Israeli archaeologists on Monday unveiled a clay seal of about 2,700-year-old imprinted with Hebrew words and images that is believed to be the biblical governor of Jerusalem. The seal, which is Round button size, was found in a building in Jerusalem’s Old City close to the Western Wall and dates traced back to the 7th century BC – the time of the First Jewish Temple, an Israel Antiquities Authority said.
The artefact bears an engraving which shows two men on robes, facing each other in a mirror-like manner. The inscription on the seal which is written in an ancient Hebrew language, below the image reads: “to the governor of the city”, or Mayor.
The excavator of the Western Wall Plaza for Israel Antiquities Authority, Shlomit Weksler-Bdolah said “It’s a very rare find.”
“The importance of this great finding is that until now, we only know the expression of city governor – Jerusalem – from the Bible.
“This is actually the first time we finding archaeological context, in an archaeological dig of a structure from the 7th century BC,” she told AFP.
However, the name of the Governor or the city of Jerusalem was not mentioned on the seal but Weksler-Bdolah believed it referring to the Holy City
“A scientific examination of the seal would be conducted very soon, and expected to collaborate it’s link to Jerusalem,” she noted
According to Weksler-Bdolah, the seal was attached to an object that was delivered to someone on behalf of the governor of the city. The News of the seal discovery comes as a tension swirl Round Jerusalem City after United States President Donald Trump recognize the city as Israel’s capital.
