US: Teacher arrested after shots were fired at Dalton High School in Georgia


A teacher has been arrested following a security incident today in Dalton High School in Dalton, Georgia.  The teacher is currently in custody after he barricaded himself inside a classroom at a high school in northwest Georgia Wednesday, according to police. A Dalton police spokesperson told CBS News the teacher had a gun. According to CBS News: “Police responded to calls about shots being fired at Dalton High School in Dalton and reported via Twitter that a person, believed to be a teacher, was barricaded inside. A Dalton police spokesperson told CBS News the teacher had a gun.”

Ex-First Lady arrested in corruption allegation


Police have arrested the wife of former Honduran President Porfirio Lobo, Wednesday on corruption charges. Rosa Elena Bonilla was detained at her residence on the outskirts of the capital Tegucigalpa. As part of the operation, police also arrested her brother-in-law and seized documents pertaining to graft accusations. Local media in Honduras extensively covered the arrest. Bonilla stands accused of illegally obtaining some 12.2 million lempiras ($522,000) in the waning days of her husband’s administration, according to the national anti-corruption council, CNA.

Boy freezes to death after sleepwalking in snow


A Russian boy aged four has tragically died after sleepwalking out of his village house into savage -20C cold in the middle of the night. He wore only thin pyjamas, and his grief-stricken mother Maria, 27, found his lifeless body after following his tiny footprints in the deep snow when she woke at 6am.
The Siberian child, called Bogdan, had set out towards a neighbour’s house. He had gone sleepwalking before, but in summer when the temperatures in Krasnoyarsk region are warm. Maria woke at 6am and could not find her boy in the house.
She discovered he had unlatched the door and gone out into the severe cold with nothing on his feet, and no hat. She followed his tiny sleepwalking footprints and soon saw his frozen body.
The Russian authorities have launched an investigation into his sad death. The boy lived in the village of Yaga in the Uzhursky district of Krasnoyarsk region.

Saudi king sacks chief of staff in major shake-up


Saudi King Salman has sacked the military chief of staff and a host of other top commanders, the country's state media said Monday, in a major shake-up of the defence establishment. The monarch also replaced the heads of the ground forces and air defences, as well as senior officials at the interior ministry, in a series of late-night royal decrees.
No official reason was given for the sweeping overhaul, but it comes as the Saudi-led coalition's military intervention in Yemen against Iran-aligned Huthi rebels nears the end of its third year.

Three men arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after the blast at shop in Leicester that killed five


Police were this morning searching the home of the owner of the Polish supermarket destroyed in an explosion on Sunday, after arresting three men on suspicion of the manslaughter of the five people killed in the blast. Officers were seen inside and outside the house of Aram Kurd, 33, a mile from the scene of the blast, hours after they revealed three men in their thirties had been arrested. Police stationed outside the property refused to say what they were looking for at the house, or whether Mr Kurd was one of the men arrested.  None of the house's residents were present during the search.
Mr Kurd, who describes himself on social media as a security worker and translator, was working in the shop at the time of the explosion, and later told how he was trapped in the rubble narrowly avoiding serious injury.

Man charged with killing girlfriend's baby after "mistaking him for a spider"


A man has been charged with killing his girlfriend's six-month-old baby after mistaking him for a spider while asleep. Dwayne Lindsey, 35, claimed he woke from sleep with baby Chayse Dearing on his chest. Lindsey, who had allegedly been smoking a drug known as ice, said he became startled thinking the child on his chest was a spider, before Chayse rolled to the floor and smashed his head against a heater.
 Hours later, Lindsey frantically called the child's mum, Michelle Dearing, claiming Chayse had stopped breathing. Michelle Dearing had left her son alone with her fiance Lindsey in their Glenroy home in Victoria, Australia, as she visited a local supermarket with two friends in the early hours of June 26, 2016.

American tourist arrested in Japan after severed head was found in a suitcase in his rented holiday flat


An American tourist is in police custody in Japan after the severed head of a woman was found in a suitcase in his holiday rental flat. Yevgeniy Vasilievich Bayraktar, 26, from New York, has been arrested and is being questioned by police following the discovery in Osaka last week. The victim is believed to be a 27-year-old woman from Sanda in Hyogo prefecture. She was last seen on CCTV cameras alongside Mr Bayraktar, just hours before she went missing on February 16.

Bill Gates isn't a fan of tech's popular buzzwords: cryptocurrency and hyperloop. The Microsoft co-founder hosted his sixth Reddit AMA on Tuesday, and didn't hold back on his answers.  Gates doesn't like what most people find appealing about cryptocurrencies: anonymity.
"The Governments ability to find money laundering and tax evasion and terrorist funding is a good thing," he wrote, "I think the speculative wave around ICOs and crypto currencies is super risky for those who go long."

631Kg of cocaine seized in cargo of bananas in Albania


Albanian police said it seized 631 kilos (1390 pounds) of Colombian cocaine in a cargo of bananas on Wednesday, the record in the country used as a crossroads for smuggling to Europe. According to Albanian police chief Ardi Veliu, the drug with a market value he estimated at 180 million euros ($220 million) was found in a container that arrived from Colombia, via Italy, to the northern port of Durres.
Two 25-year-old Albanian men were arrested, while police were searching for a third.
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said "the operation is a huge step in Albania's fight against organised crime".

Australian amnesty nets 57,000 firearms and rocket launcher


More than 57,000 illegal firearms including a rocket launcher and machine guns were handed in during a recent Australian amnesty in which gun owners could surrender such weapons without penalty. The government and some gun policy analysts were surprised by the large number of weapons that were surrendered in the first nationwide amnesty since 1996, when a lone gunman killed 35 people in Tasmania state and galvanized popular support for tough national gun controls.

Morocco King undergoes heart operation


Morocco’s King Mohammed VI yesterday underwent a successful heart surgery in France.
The 54-year old king was treated at a Paris clinic after suffering from a “heart rhythm disorder” on Jan. 20, the and he had also been diagnosed with an “atrial flutter”.
The surgery normalized the heart rhythm, and the king would be able to resume his duties without any restrictions, state news agency MAP said. The king, who heads the Muslim world’s longest-serving dynasty, took office in 1999 after his father, Hassan II, died of a heart attack.

Saudi Arabia allows women join army


For the second time, Saudi Arabia has begun to allow women to sign up for military service, the Anadolu Agency reported yesterday. The decision, which comes as part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 social programme was announced by the General Directorate of Public Security. Interested applicants from Riyadh, Makkah, Al-Qusaim and Madina can apply through the government’s electronic portal this week, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) quoted the directorate as saying in a statement.

Takata airbag scandal: Australia recalls 2.3 million cars


The Australian government has ordered a compulsory recall of 2.3 million cars due to faulty Takata airbags. Exploding airbags have been linked to at least 23 deaths worldwide, including one in Australia, the government said. The move adds to a global recall of more than 100 million vehicles - the biggest in automotive history. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said it was also the largest ever compulsory recall of a product in the nation, and the first to hit cars.
Voluntary recalls conducted previously had not done enough to protect drivers, said Assistant Minister to the Treasurer Michael Sukkar.

Judge issues default judgement against Akon


Akon's been ordered to pay $164,786.99 to a company that leased him some space on the 66th floor of the Empire State Building for his fashion line, Aliaune Milano, this according to legal docs obtained by TMZ. The leasing company, GTFM, said Akon agreed in July of 2012 to pay $25k per month and did so until July of 2015 when he stopped paying rent. GTFM claims Akon's company finally left in January of 2016, owing almost 7 months of rent.
GTFM had sued Akon, but the singer never responded to the lawsuit, so the judge issued a default judgment.

Laureus Awards: Roger Federer named World Sportsman of the Year 2017


Twenty-time tennis grand slam champion Roger Federer has won the 2017 Laureus World Sportsman of the Year and Comeback of the Year awards. The 36-year-old Swiss won the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles in 2017 after seven years without a major.
"I didn't believe I would ever come back to this level," said Federer. "The year I had was something else."
Serena Williams took the World Sportswoman of the Year award after winning her 23rd grand slam in 2017.
"This means the world to me," added world number one Federer.

Processed food, sugary cereals and sliced bread may contribute to cancer risk, study claims


"Ultra-processed" foods including sugary breakfast cereals, chicken nuggets, pizza and pre-sliced bread may increase the risk of cancer, a study has claimed. Fast foods and ready meals amount for 50 per cent of the average person’s diet in some developed countries and could be contributing to rising cancer levels, researchers working in Brazil and France found. Teams from the Sorbonne in Paris and the University of Sao Paulo found that a 10% increase in ultra-processed food intake was associated with a 12 per cent increased risk of overall cancer.

A postmortem has revealed that Bollywood superstar Sridevi Kapoor, who reports earlier said died of a cardiac arrest, actually died of accidental drowning in her hotel bathtub in Dubai on Saturday. The beautiful 54-year-old actress was in Dubai where she was attending her nephew's wedding when the accident happened. She was found unconscious in her bathtub in her suite at Dubai’s Emirates Towers hotel and rushed to hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

Neymar: Paris St-Germain's injured forward out for 'six to eight weeks'


Paris St-Germain forward Neymar will be out for at least six weeks and will miss next Tuesday's Champions League last-16 second-leg tie against Real Madrid, according to his father. Two stowaways fell to their death on Monday, from an airplane as it took off from an airport in Guayaquil, Ecuador on a flight to New York, authorities told local media. Boxer dies shortly after victory match


Ring legend Ricky Hatton led the tributes after professional boxer Scott Westgarth died following his fight on Saturday night. The 31-year-old light-heavyweight was taken ill after returning backstage following his points victory over Dec Spelman at Doncaster Dome.

Missouri third-graders selling AR-15 raffle tickets for their baseball team


Children in a Missouri town are selling raffle tickets offering an AR-15 assault-style rifle as the prize to raise money for their baseball team. The rifle is the same type of weapon used last week in the Florida school shooting that killed 17 people. The raffle was launched before the shooting, but Levi Patterson, the coach of the team in Neosho for boys 9 and younger, told The Kansas City Star he plans to continue with the fundraiser.
Patterson said he decided to “turn it into a positive thing” after “getting the hate” in the form of angry Facebook posts after the raffle was first reported.

Bill Cosby loses 44-year-old daughter


The daughter of Bill Cosby, Ensa Cosby is dead. She passed away on Friday night at the age of 44.
TMZ reports that Ensa Cosby died in Massachusetts, where the family has a large estate. A spokesperson for her father, Andrew Wyatt, announced on Monday afternoon that her death was caused by renal disease, with Ensa having suffered from kidney problems throughout her life.
Her passing comes one month before her father is set to be retried on rape charges in Pennsylvania this April. This is the second child Cosby has lost, with son Ennis having been murdered in 1997 during a botched carjacking in Los Angeles. Ensa is survived by her parents Bill and Camille, her siblings Erika, Erinn and Evin and her husband Martin McLean.

Ghanaian king who rules his people via Skype in southern Germany builds a jail for women in the town


King Togbe Ngoryifia Cephas Kosi Bansah, who rules over 300,000 people in the Hohoe, east of Ghana from a city in southern Germany, has built a jail for women in the town, the German Press Agency (DPA) reports. The 69-year-old monarch, who has lived in Ludwigshafen since 1970, said the town has no jail only for women.
“Male and female detainees of all ages were held there and the women were subjected to sexual assault by the men,” he said. “This was an unacceptable situation - we needed to build cells for women.” he said.

Teenage mum went shopping at Victoria’s Secret with dead baby she killed


A mother who went shopping for sexy underwear in a Victoria’s Secret store with her dead baby stuffed into her handbag has been jailed. According to NY Post,Security guards suspected teenager Tiona Rodriguez of shoplifting and noticed a foul smell coming from her bag at a store in Manhattan, New York. However when they inspected her bag they found the gruesome source of the smell – a tiny decomposing baby. The teenager is said to have killed her baby after she delivered it in a bathroom in her friend’s house in Queens. Rodriguez has now been jailed for 16 years.
She was sentenced on Thursday after pleading guilty to manslaughter in January in what the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said was a ‘shocking’ case. It emerged that Rodriguez had deliberately killed the newborn child after delivering the baby in the bathroom of her friend’s apartment in Queens. She was 17 at the time, according to the New York Post .

Four killed in Leicester shop explosion, cause yet to be determined: British Police


Four people were killed in an explosion and fire at a three-storey building in the central English city of Leicester, police said on Monday.
"At this stage, there are four confirmed fatalities and four people remain in hospital, one with serious injuries," Leicestershire police said in a statement about the blast on Sunday evening.
Officers said there was no indication the explosion was related to terrorism but the cause had yet to be determined. Firefighters worked through the night to control the blaze, which tore through the building in a residential area west of Leicester's city centre. Police Superintendent Shane O'Neill warned that the toll may yet rise further.
"We believe there may be people who have not yet been accounted for and rescue efforts continue in order to locate any further casualties," he said.
Pictures and videos posted on social media showed a property engulfed in flames, with rubble and debris scattered around.

Weinstein Co. set to file for bankruptcy as sale talks collapse


As Weinstein Co. suffers losses one after another, in another development, it will now file for bankruptcy protection after a bid to sell its assets to an investor group collapsed, the company's board of directors said Sunday night. In a statement, the board said: "While we recognize that this is an extremely unfortunate outcome for our employees, our creditors and any victims, the Board has no choice but to pursue the only viable option to maximize the company's remaining value: an orderly bankruptcy process."

Woman defecates inside police cruiser to hide drugs


A Texas woman arrested with drugs was forced to use plan number two. Corsicana police responded to the local HEB to investigate a theft and later detained 32-year-old Shannen Shunta Martin at the grocery store,NY Daily reports. Officers said she resisted the arrest, but they eventually subdued her and managed to get her inside of the police cruiser, according to a statement from the police department.
“During transport, the suspect intentionally defecated in her pants and then concealed 2.3 grams of crack cocaine, a crack pipe and 1 Valentine’s Day card in the defecation,” the statement reads.
The officers were then forced to sift through her mess and retrieve the evidence. Martin was charged with two felonies, including tampering with evidence and possession of a controlled substance.
The Corsicana Police Department issued a blunt warning to others in light of the arrest: “This is scientific proof that drugs will fry your brain folks.”

Father slashed his own throat in court as he was convicted of abusing his own daughter


A father reportedly slashed his own throat in court after being convicted of sexually abusing his daughter in England. the Leicester Mercury reported."
The man had smuggled a razor blade into court and when he was convicted by a jury of several counts of assault of his six-year-old daughter at Leicester Crown Court the man began to slash at his own throat in the court dock. As he slashed himself, his ex-partner shouted: "Go on b****** do it".

Grandmother who thought she was dying of dementia blew entire £10k life savings but doctors later reveal she was misdiagnosed


A 62-year-old grandmother has been left penniless after she spent her life's savings thinking she was dying, only to later receive the news that she was misdiagnosed.  In Novermber 2016, Jackie Dibb, was told by doctors that she had a maximum of five years to live because she was suffering from an incurable dementia. The doctors told her to enjoy the rest of her life and she took their advice and went on a spending spree.
