Inmate drugged his twin brother during jail visit and swapped clothes before fleeing
A man who desperately wanted to see his mother managed to get his brother to spend time in jail instead of him. Authorities in Peru announced that they have tracked down and recaptured a prisoner more than a year after he escaped from jail by leaving his twin brother behind in his place. Alexander Jheferson Delgado Herrera had been serving a 16-year sentence for sexual abuse and robbery in a prison in Lima.
When his twin, Giancarlo, came to visit him, Alexander drugged him, swapped clothes, and walked out of jail. When the drugs wore off, a confused Giancarlo told jail officials that he was not supposed to be there. Officials eventually took his fingerprints and discovered that he was indeed not the criminal. At first, authorities investigated whether the twins conspired to carry out the prison swap.
However, it was determined that Giancarlo was innocent and that he was not aware of his criminal brother’s plans. Giancarlo was freed from prison and authorities launched a search for his twin brother. The Ministry of the Interior recently offered a reward for information leading to the arrest of Alexander.
After 13 months on the run, he was finally tracked down in the city of Callao.
Now, he is expected to be transferred to a maximum security prison.
