A babysitter murdered two young children because she was jealous of their mother, according to police in New York. The New York Police Department (NYPD) said that they have arrested 55-year-old Yoselyn Ortega after being accused of killing 6-year-old Lucia Krim and 2-year-old Leo Krim. Ortega has been charged with 2 counts of first-degree murder. She was booked into jail and she is being held without bail. If convicted, she faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
According to the police investigation, 41-year-old Marina Krim hired Ortega to babysit her two young children. One night, when Marina came home, she found that house in total darkness. The only light that was on was in the bathroom. She opened the door and found her two kids lying dead in the bathtub covered in their blood. Ortega was sitting next to them.
After she saw the reaction of Marina, Ortega stabbed herself in the neck in an attempt to commit suicide. However, Ortega survived. Prosecutors told the court that Ortega was extremely jealous of Marina. Ortega hated herself and how she took care of her own children and was jealous of the way Marina was treating the victims.
Ortega decided to take the children away from Marina in order to spite her.
Both children had slit throats and more than 30 stab wounds. Marina described the scene as a horror movie.
Ortega is pursuing an insanity defense, claiming that she was insane at the time she committed the murders and was not legally responsible.
