Minister vows to hunt charity sexual predators as 80 new incidents emerge
Charities have reported 80 new 'safeguarding incidents' to the Charity Commission in the last two weeks, International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt said today. Some 26 charities have told the Charity Commission about previously unreported safeguarding incidents, including 7 which allegedly occurred within the last year. They include the 'full spectrum' of incidents where people have been harmed, or have been at risk of harm. But the watchdog will not reveal the names of the charities involved until further investigation has taken place.
The new figures come as charity bosses gather at a summit in London to come up with ways to tackle safeguarding in the aid sector. The summit was set up in the wake of the scandal surrounding sexual exploitation by Oxfam workers in Syria and Haiti.
Opening the summit, Ms Mordaunt said it was a “wake up call” for the sector. And in a message to the “predatory individuals” seeking to exploit the charity sector, she warned: “We will find you. We will bring you to justice.
"Your time is up.”
