Horse named Justice suing former owner for $100,000
A judge is going to hear a case in which an animal is listed as the plaintiff against its former owner. The horse named Justice was rescued from a home in Cornelius, Washington, last year after it was found to suffer from severe malnutrition and had several serious untreated health problems, according to court documents. Its former owner, Gwendolyn Vercher, was convicted of animal negligence.
Vercher was sentenced to three years of probation. She was also banned from possessing any pets or livestock for five years and she has to complete 96 hours of community service within 12 months. Vercher paid close to $4,000 in restitution. Justice, 8, was transferred to a sanctuary in Troutdale, Oregon, where a good home is being sought for the abused animal.
The Animal Legal Defense Fund said that Justice will need special care for the rest of its life, and therefore, it will be hard to find a good home. The Animal Legal Defense Fund filed the lawsuit in Hillsboro, Oregon, against Vercher on behalf of Justice. They are seeking $100,000 for neglect.
