3 die during South African church stampede
The South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating the death of three female congregants at Shepherd Bushiri’s Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) church in Pretoria on Friday night. A police delegation led by SAPS Tshwane West policing cluster commander Maj-Gen Daniel Mthombeni visited the Pretoria Showgrounds – where the church is situated – on Saturday afternoon, shortly after learning about the alleged stampede by congregants which is said to have caused the trio’s death.

Billionaire Heiress, Paris Hilton, has again confirmed she won't be returning the $2 million engagement ring Chris Zylka gave after calling off their engagement.
The 37-year-old singer told TMZ on Boxing Day 'It's mine,' Paris, 37, as she strolled into LAX with her friend Brandon Davis. 'It was free,' Paris claimed, contradicting the ring designer's comments that Chris indeed paid for the item.
This comes after she appeared on The Jenny McCarthy Show last week and said of the ring: 'Look, the person who we got it from got millions and millions of dollars of free publicity.'
She also confirmed she was keeping the 20-carat diamond ring because 'Diamonds are a girl's best friend.'
Paris and Chris got engaged in January 2018 during a romantic ski trip in Aspen, Colorado.

MTN Group announced on Thursday that it had reached a settlement with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in terms of what the bank alleged was the improper repatriation by MTN Nigeria of US$8.1bn between 2007 and 2015. Fin24 reported in August that MTN Group's shares plunged to a nine-year low after the NCB ordered it to return $8.1bn the bank alleged Africa's largest mobile-phone company illegally moved out of the country. Richard Overton, America's oldest World War II veteran and the oldest man in the United States, died Thursday afternoon Dec 27th at the age of 112. Overton would have been 113 on May 11, 2019 but the veteran had been hospitalized with pneumonia, his family said.
Overton volunteered for the Army starting in 1942 and served with the 188th Aviation Engineer Battalion, an all-black unit that served on various islands in the Pacific.
"He was there at Pearl Harbor when the battleships were still smoldering. He was there at Okinawa. He was there at Iwo Jima, where he said. 'I only got out of there by the grace of God,'" former President Barack Obama said while honoring Overton at a Veterans Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery in 2013.

Miss Congo emerged winner at the Miss Africa 2018 beauty pageant and shortly after she won, her wig caught fire on stage. 24-year-old Dorcas Kasinde beat other contestants to win the crown. Miss Nigeria came second while Miss Zambia came third.
As Miss Congo celebrated her victory and hugged her predecessor, her wig caught fire. Thankfully, Ebuka came to her rescue before more damage could be done. Social media users have jokingly accused Calabar witches of being responsible. But it is believed the fire was caused by the stage flame positioned at various corners on the stage.

Forest Whitaker reportedly files for divorce after being married for 22 years
Forest Whitaker and his wife Keisha Nash are reportedly calling it quits after being married for over two decades. According to court documents obtained by The Blast, the “Black Panther” star filed documents on Thursday to end his marriage with Keisha, who is a model and entrepreneur.
Whitaker cites irreconcilable differences as his reason for wanting a divorce and does not want to pay spousal support. He also wants both sides to be responsible for their own legal fees.
The exact cause of the split is unclear.

Sister Wendy Beckett, writer, art critic and presenter of a much loved and popular series of BBC programmes about painting has died."
Sister Wendy was a religious sister who became well known during the 1990s when she presented a series of documentaries for the BBC on the history of art.
She was known for her programmes, including Sister Wendy's Odyssey and Sister Wendy's Grand Tour.

US adventurer completes first unaided solo trek across Antarctica
A 33-year-old man from the United States has become the first person to complete a solo trek across Antarctica without any assistance. Colin O'Brady finished the 1,500km journey across the frozen continent in 54 days, lugging his supplies on a sledge as he skied in bone-chilling temperatures from north to south.
"I accomplished my goal: to become the first person in history to traverse the continent of Antarctica coast to coast solo, unsupported and unaided," O'Brady wrote in an Instagram post on Wednesday, after covering the final 124km in one big push that lasted 32 hours.

UK bans pet shops from selling puppies and kittens
Britain has banned third-party sales of puppies and kittens to protect the animals from exploitation. The government says the new law will help crack down on “puppy farms” and make it harder for unscrupulous dealers who have little regard for animal welfare.
Animal Welfare Minister David Rutley said the ban “is part of our commitment to make sure the nation’s much-loved pets get the right start in life.”
The decision follows a public consultation that found overwhelming support for banning third-party sales. Under the new measure, people wishing to adopt a puppy or kitten would have to deal directly with a breeder or a re-homing center, rather than pet shops or other commercial dealers.
