Passenger plane left with gaping hole after crashing with drone

A passenger plane has been damaged after it crashed into a ‘drone’ during its descent into Mexico. The Boeing 737-800, operated by Mexican airline Aeromexico, suffered a ‘huge hit’ as it came into land at Tijuana International Airport, in Baja California. Workers could then be seen tending to the gaping hole and dents left in the nose of the aircraft.
It is not yet confirmed what collided the plane, although experts believe the damage is consistent with a drone collision. The pilot had reportedly told the co-pilot ‘we didn’t see anything, just a strong hit’ after the incident. They requested assistance from air traffic control after the hit to ensure the rest of the landing went smoothly. The aircraft had been in the air for three hours, after setting off from Miguel Hidalgo and Costilla Airport, in Guadalajara, at 6.41am.

Fortunately there were no injuries sustained in the crash and the plane landed safely in Tijuana at around 7:40am. Aeromexico said in a statement: ‘The exact cause is still being investigated. ‘The aircraft landed normally and the passengers’ safety was never compromised.’ Incidents involving planes and drones have become more common in recent years as the aerial vehicles have increased in popularity.
