Twitter to soon allow calls and encrypted messaging - Elon Musk says

 

 
Twitter owner Elon Musk has revealed details about new features including adding calls and encrypted messaging coming to the platform.
 The call feature on Twitter will bring the micro-blogging platform into line with the likes of Meta's social media applications, Facebook and Instagram, which have similar features.
Musk said a version of encrypted direct messages will be available on Twitter starting Wednesday May 10, but did not say if calls will be encrypted.

A New York jury found on Tuesday that Donald Trump s**ually abused the advice columnist E Jean Carroll in a New York department store changing room 27 years ago.
 The verdict was read out in a Manhattan federal court on Tuesday afternoon, just hours after jurors began deliberating following a seven-day civil trial.
 The panel of six men and three women also found that Trump injured advice columnist Carroll in a Manhattan Bergdorf Goodman dressing room and defamed her when he called her a liar.

LinkedIn cuts 716 jobs as it phases out its China app

 

LinkedIn, the world’s largest social media platform for professionals, is cutting 716 positions and shutting down its jobs app in mainland China, the California-based company announced.
The decision was made amid shifts in customer behavior and slower revenue growth, CEO Ryan Roslansky said in a letter to employees.
“As we guide LinkedIn through this rapidly changing landscape, we are making changes to our Global Business Organization and our China strategy that will result in a reduction of roles for 716 employees,” he said.

American man faces 10-years in prison after pleading guilty to supplying banned drugs to Blessing Okagbare and other Olympic athletes

 

 A Texas therapist faces up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty on Monday May 8, to supplying performance-enhancing drugs to Olympic athletes including banned Nigerian sprinter Blessing Okagbare, US authorities said.
 Eric Lira, a 'naturopathic' therapist based in the city of El Paso, is the first individual to be convicted under a new US law introduced in the wake of Russia's state-backed Olympic doping scandals, the Department of Justice said in a statement.
The 2020 law, named after Russian whistleblower Grigory Rodchenkov, enables US authorities to prosecute individuals involved in international doping fraud conspiracies following the Russian doping scandal.

Ed Sheeran wins Thinking Out Loud copyright case

 

 Ed Sheeran did not copy Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On when composing Thinking Out Loud, a US court has ruled.
The British singer-songwriter had denied stealing elements of the song for his 2014 worldwide hit.
Heirs of Gaye's co-writer argued that Sheeran, Warner Music Group and Sony Music Publishing owed them money for copyright infringement.
Sheeran had said he would give up his music career if found guilty at the trial in New York.
"If that happens, I'm done, I'm stopping," he said when asked about the toll the trial at Manhattan federal court was taking on him.

UK court jails Nigerian senator and wife for nine years for kidney-harvesting plot

 


A wealthy Nigerian politician, his wife and a doctor have been jailed by a London court for trafficking a street trader from Lagos to the United Kingdom to illegally harvest his kidney for a transplant for their seriously ill daughter.
The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said on Friday that Ike Ekweremadu had been sentenced to nine years and eight months in the UK’s first illegal organ-harvesting prosecution, while his wife Beatrice, 56, was sentenced to four years and six months.
Nigerian doctor Obinna Obeta, 51 – described by prosecutors as a middleman – was jailed for 10 years, the CPS said. All three were convicted in March of conspiring to arrange the travel of a man in order to harvest his organs.

22 killed after boat ferrying tourists capsizes in India’s Kerala state

 


At least 22 people, including women and children, have died after a boat capsized in India’s southern Kerala state on Sunday, fire officials said, as search and rescue operations enter a second day.
The boat, which was ferrying tourists, capsized near Tuvalthiram beach in Malappuram around 7:30 p.m. local time, the district’s fire department told CNN. Officials do not know how many people were on board, but estimate the number to be around 35, it added.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, V.R. Premkumar, a senior official from Malappuram district, where the incident took place, said 10 people have been admitted to hospital while five swam ashore.
The Indian Navy has joined search and rescue operations, regional officials said Monday.

Needing only a draw to take an unassailable 16-point lead with five games remaining, Serie A's top scorer, Victor Osimhen, equalised for Napoli in the 52nd minute to spark wild celebrations throughout Naples, inside the stadium in Udine and beyond.
The title is Napoli's third in Italy's top division and their first since the legendary Argentine player Diego Maradona led them to championships in 1987 and 1990. Napoli's home stadium was renamed in Maradona's honour following his death in November 2020.

 Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp has defended Liverpool fans for booing the British national anthem 'God Save the King' prior to the 1-0 win over Brentford at Anfield on Saturday, May 6, the same day King Charles was crowned the new British king.
Liverpool football club said it would play ‘God Save the King’ anthem after the league management had contacted clubs playing home games telling them to note the occasion.
The club played the anthem ahead of kick-off, but even before it started, there were loud boos as many voiced their disapproval.

8 killed and many wounded in Texas mall shooting

 


As the sound of gunfire began to resonate through the Allen Premium Outlets parking lot near Dallas, panicked shoppers screamed and ducked behind rows of cars as others sprinted across the lot, one witness video shows.
Inside the sprawling complex in suburban Allen, employees, shoppers and families with young children bolted to take cover in storage areas or back hallways, witnesses told CNN.
Eight people were killed and at least seven others wounded when a gunman opened fire at the outlet mall Saturday afternoon, marking the latest act of gun violence to shatter an American community as they are enjoying activities in public places.

Corpses pile up after nearly 200 killed in Congo floods

 

 At least 176 people have died in flash floods in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a regional governor said on Friday, as heavy rain destroyed buildings and forced aid workers to gather mud-clad corpses into piles.
The rainfall in Kalehe territory in South Kivu province caused rivers to overflow on Thursday, inundating the villages of Bushushu and Nyamukubi.
South Kivu governor Théo Ngwabidje Kasi put the death toll at 176 and said that others were still missing. A local civil society member, Kasole Martin, said 227 bodies had been found.

Serbian president announces harsh anti-gun measures after second shooting spree

 

 Following a second shooting spree within a week, the Serbian president announced a harsh crackdown on guns.
Serbian police have arrested the 21-year-old suspect in a shooting that killed eight people, including an off-duty police officer, and injured another 14.
In a statement, police said that the man, identified by initials UB, was arrested early Friday after a drive-by shooting spree that began in the village of Dubona near Mladenovac, and then continued in Malo Orašje and Šepšin.

Teenage boy arrested after fatally shooting 9 at Serbian primary school

 

 A teenage boy opened fire at a school in Serbia’s capital Wednesday, killing eight children and a school guard, police said. Six more children and a teacher were injured and hospitalized.
Police identified the shooter by his initials, K.K., and said he had opened fire with his father’s gun. He was arrested in the school yard, police said. A statement identified him as a student at the school in central Belgrade who was born in 2009.
Police said they received a call about the shooting at the Vladislav Ribnikar primary school around 8:40 a.m. Primary schools in Serbia have eight grades, starting with first grade.
“I was able to hear the shooting. It was non-stop,” a student who was in a sports class downstairs when the gunfire erupted. “I didn’t know what was happening. We were receiving some messages on the phone.”

 A father of at least 550 children has been banned from donating any more of his sperm after he "deliberately lied" to prospective parents.
National guidelines in the Netherlands say sperm donors are allowed to father a maximum of 25 children with 12 mothers.
The prolific donor, identified only as Jonathan M under Dutch privacy rules, provided sperm to several Dutch fertility clinics, a facility in Denmark and people he met through advertisements and online forums, the Hague District Court said in a written judgement.

India will surpass China as world’s most populous country by mid-year, UN says

 


 India is set to surpass China as the world’s most populous nation, with almost 3 million more people by the middle of this year, data released by the United Nations on Wednesday showed.
Based on the projections, India’s population by mid-year will reach 1.4286 billion, compared to China’s 1.4257 billion – 2.9 million fewer – according to the United Nations Population Fund’s (UNFPA) “State of World Population Report” for 2023.
UN officials have said it is not possible to determine the exact date for the shift, due to “uncertainty” about the data coming from China and India. India’s last census was in 2011 and most recent, scheduled in 2021, was delayed during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Cuba cancels May Day parade because of fuel shortages

 

 Cuba's communist government has cancelled Monday's traditional May Day parade because of acute fuel shortages.
Every year hundreds of thousands of people are bussed in from across the island to fill Havana's Revolution Square on International Workers' Day.
It is the first time since the 1959 revolution that the celebrations have been cancelled for economic reasons.
In recent weeks long queues have formed at petrol stations, with drivers often waiting for days.
Earlier this month, President Miguel Diaz-Canel said Cuba was only receiving two-thirds of the fuel it needs, adding that suppliers were failing to fulfil contractual obligations.

Adidas sued by investors over Kanye West deal

 

 
Adidas is being sued by investors who claim the firm knew about Kanye West's problematic behaviour years before it ended their partnership.
Investors allege Adidas failed to limit financial losses and take precautionary measures to minimise their exposure.
The sportswear giant ended its collaboration with the designer and rapper, who is known as Ye, last year following antisemitic comments.
In response, Adidas said: "We outright reject these unfounded claims."
It added it "will take all necessary measures to vigorously defend ourselves against them".

Brazil kindergarten attack: Man kills four children in Blumenau

 

 At least four young children have been killed by a man wielding a hatchet in a kindergarten in the city of Blumenau in southern Brazil, local officials say.
Another four children were injured by the 25-year-old man who entered the creche at around 09:00 local time (12:00 GMT) on Wednesday.
At least one of them is reportedly in a serious condition.
Police told local media that the attacker had surrendered and was in police custody.
In a statement, military police said that the assailant had handed himself in at one of their stations in the town.
