A Florida hospital were faced with an  ethical dilemma when paramedics brought in an unconscious patient with “Do Not Resuscitate” tattooed across his chest . The 70-year-old man was admitted to the Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami with respiratory problems, a high blood alcohol concentration and no identification documents, according to the doctors’ story published Thursday in The New England Journal of Medicine.

Russia accuses US of trying to provoke North Korea

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has accused the US of trying to provoke North Korea into stepping up its nuclear missile programme. He rejected a call by the American envoy to the UN Security Council to sever ties with North Korea, after its latest ballistic missile test on Wednesday. On Wednesday, the North tested its first missile in two months, saying the continental US was now within striking distance. However, Russia argues sanctions do not work and advocates negotiations instead. The US has warned that North Korea's government will be "utterly destroyed" if war breaks out.

11-year-old girl wins $25,000 science prize for creating a cheap device to test drinking water for poison

Gitanjali Rao, a seventh grader from Colorado, has been awarded the title of "America's top young scientist" for designing a compact device to detect lead in drinking water, which she believes can be faster and cheaper than other current methods. 
 The 11-year-old's invention was inspired by the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, where cost-cutting measures led to tainted drinking water that contained lead and other toxins. It also won her a $25,000 prize, for which Rao already has plans: "I plan to use most of it in developing my device further so that it can be commercially available soon," she said.

Five people injured after car rams into pedestrians in London

Five people have been injured after a car smashed into pedestrians in London this morning and two people involved in the incident on Stockwell Road are critically injured.  The South London road remains closed and the Metropolitan Police say the incident, which happened at around 3am is not linked to terrorism.

India bus passenger arrested over smelly socks

Police in India say they have arrested a man whose smelly socks caused a dispute between him and fellow passengers on a bus. They told the BBC they had lodged a complaint against Prakash Kumar, 27, for "causing a public nuisance".

Rugby League World Cup: Australia edge out England to retain trophy

Australia edged out England in a tight and nervy Rugby League World Cup final to retain the trophy at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. England produced a dogged and resilient performance in their first final for 22 years, but the Kangaroos held on to win an 11th world title. Boyd Cordner smashed through for the only try of the game as England restricted Australia to six points.
It was a monumental effort from England against a team who came into the game as overwhelming favourites. Australia's victory, though, completed a World Cup double for the country, with the women's team having beaten New Zealand 23-16 earlier.

Russell Simmons is "stepping aside" from his companies in the wake of numerous sexual assault accusations leveled against him. The founder of Def Jam and Phat Farm was accused by actress Jenny Lumet of rape. The screenwriter detailed how the music mogul got her to his apartment by force and intimidation. Prior to that, he was accused by former model Keri Claussen Khalighi of sexually assaulting her when she was 17. In response, Simmons released a statement today apologizing to Lumet and also revealed he will be stepping aside from his companies.

Despacito was a huge hit in 2017 and Vevo has revealed the music video to go with it was just as big.
The music video platform says Despacito was watched 4.3 billion times globally and 64.7 million times in the UK. The reggaeton-pop tune by Luis Fonsi, featuring Daddy Yankee, was number one in 47 countries. Vevo says it was the most watched video of 2017 in the UK, followed by French Montana's Unforgettable which had 56.7 million views. Despacito was filmed in San Juan, Puerto Rico and has become the most streamed song of all time. Latin songs have really dominated this year worldwide.

A tiger mauled two children after escaping from a circus enclosure. Screams of terror erupted among panicked crowds at a village fair when the big cat broke out of its cage on Saturday. Two children were scratched by the tiger which briefly ran riot before it was recaptured by handlers. The injured youngsters were taken to hospital but their lives were not believed to be in danger. The pair are now in a stable condition.

Disgraced TODAY show host, Matt Lauer who was fired for sexual misconduct, through his lawyers, is trying to get a $30 million payout from NBC. His lawyers are trying to have him get paid through the remainder of his $20 million a year contract, which still has a year and a half left on it.
A source said of Matt and his team:
"They are currently looking at his contract and determining whether the claims against him, which clearly would affect any moral clause in his contract and his ensuing termination would cut off his contractual rights to be paid through to the end of his contract."

Libya, has reached a deal with European and African leaders to allow the emergency repatriation of refugees and migrants facing abuse in detention camps in the North African country. Thursday's announcement came after revelations that African asylum seekers and migrants were being sold into slavery in Libya as they tried in vain to reach European shores.

Kenya Airways fires 140 engineers and technicians over strike

Kenya Airways on Thursday fired about 140 engineers and technicians over what it called an “illegal strike”, an internal memo from the CEO to all staff, seen by Reuters showed. The airline, which is 7.8 percent owned by Air France KLM, restructured $2 billion of debt in a rescue plan this month.
“(The) management will not entertain actions that impede the recovery process of the company,” CEO Sebastian Mikosz wrote in the memo.

8 dead, 90 fishermen missing as cyclone Ockhi hits India

Eight people have died in coastal Kerala and Tamil Nadu and nearly 90 fishermen are missing as a depression above the Bay of Bengal turned into a cyclonic storm. Cyclone Ockhi, meteorologists say, is heading for Lakshadweep and is unlikely to make landfall in Tamil Nadu or Kerala. As of this morning, Cyclone Ockhi is hovering 160 km east of Lakshadweep in the Arabian Sea. Schools in seven districts across the two states have been closed. In Kanyakumari and Thoothukudi districts of Tamil Nadu, strong winds uprooted more than 500 trees, snapped power lines and damaged settlements close to the sea. Heavy rain is likely to continue.

Australia switches on the world's biggest battery

The world's biggest lithium ion battery has started delivering power. Activating the massive system in South Australia fulfills a bold pledge by Tesla CEO Elon Musk to build the battery in 100 days or provide it for free. The electric car company's Powerpack battery system stores energy generated by a nearby wind farm and is capable of providing electricity for as many as 30,000 homes. It is three times more powerful than its nearest competitor. The new Tesla system is part of efforts to address energy supply problems in South Australia, which has suffered high-profile blackouts in recent years.
"South Australia is now leading the world in dispatchable renewable energy," the state's premier, Jay Weatherill, said in a statement Friday. "This is history in the making."
Tesla (TSLA) said it hopes the project "provides a model for future deployments around the world."

Pterosaurs: Scientist unearth record haul of egg fossils from ancient flying reptile in China

 A discovery in northwestern China of hundreds of fossilized pterosaur eggs is providing fresh understanding of the flying reptiles that lived alongside the dinosaurs, including evidence that their babies were born flightless and needed parental care. Scientists said on Thursday they unearthed 215 eggs of the fish-eating Hamipterus tianshanensis – a species whose adults had a crest atop an elongated skull, pointy teeth and a wingspan of more than 11ft (3.5m) – including 16 eggs containing partial embryonic remains.

DMX pleads guilty to tax evasion, faces up to five years in prison

Rapper, DMX (real name, Earl Simmons) struck a plea deal in his tax evasion case Thursday, but could still serve up to five years in prison. According to TMZ, the rapper pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion in New York, thereby making sure he won't be spending the 44 years in jail that he formerly faced.
In an interview with TMZ, DMX's lawyer Murray Richman said the rapper told the court he knowingly did not pay taxes on royalties and other monies. Adding that DMX does fear going to jail, but he took the deal regardless, knowing what lay in front of him otherwise.
His sentencing hearing has been scheduled for March 29, 2018.

'Frozen to death': 7-year-old boy found dead from suspected hypothermia outside his home

A boy aged seven who dreamed of becoming a doctor is thought to have frozen to death outside his home. Hakeem Hussain was declared dead at the scene after paramedics were called to a property in Birmingham at 7.30am on Sunday. The schoolboy is believed to have been outdoors for some time and had reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest. It is thought he succumbed to hypothermia in freezing temperatures, although that was not confirmed last night. His mother was named locally as Laura Heath, 35.

Court papers show Kim Jong Nam was carrying the antidote to the toxin that killed him

According to a toxicology report submitted at his murder trial, Kim Jong Nam was carrying a poison antidote when he was assassinated in February at Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur airport, Twelve bottles containing Atropine, a medication that relieves muscle spasms, clears passages, and can be used to treat poisoning, were found in a backpack that Kim was carrying when he died.
