Pope defrocks Chilean priest in sex abuse scandal


Pope Francis has defrocked a Chilean priest formerly convicted of sexual abuse, the Vatican said in a statement Friday.
"Pope Francis has dismissed from the clerical state Fernando Karadima Farina, from the archdiocese of Santiago del Chile. The Holy Father has taken this exceptional decision in conscious and for the good of the Church," the statement said.

Elon Musk's fortune takes a $1.5bn hit after SEC lawsuit


t’s looking like another bad day for Silicon Valley billionaires Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. Musk’s fortune dropped by $1.5bn on Friday in New York, the day after the Securities and Exchange Commission accused the Tesla CEO of misleading investors with his infamous tweet last month about taking the electric-car maker private. In its lawsuit, the SEC is also seeking to ban him from serving as a director or officer.

A mass grave containing the remains of 800 German soldiers killed in World War II has been unearthed during building work in the south-western Russian city of Volgograd, the German War Graves Commission said on Friday.

Lee Myung-bak, S Korea ex-president, jailed for 15 years


Former South Korean president Lee Myung-bak has been jailed for 15 years for corruption. Lee was sentenced in a Seoul court on Friday on charges of bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power, and ordered to pay a 13 billion won ($11.5m; £8.8m) fine. The former president claims the charges are politically motivated.

Microsoft co-founder, Paul Allen diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma 9-years after he battled it


Paul Allen, the billionaire owner of Seattle Seahawks and Microsoft co-founder has been  diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma 9-years after he battled it in 2009. Making the announcement, Allen said on Twitter that he recently learned of the non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and plans to fight it aggressively.

United States ends diplomatic visas for UN same-sex partners


Under a new State Department requirements, the United States will only recognize marriages, and not same-sex partnerships, when granting diplomatic visas to partners.  The change, which took effect Monday, impacts the partners of United Nations officials, ambassadors, full-time embassy and consulate staff, and foreign military members stationed at US military bases or assigned to a foreign embassy or consulate in the US, among others.

Nobel Prize for Physics won by a woman for first time in 55 years


The 2018 Nobel Prize for Physics has been awarded to a woman for the first time in 55 years.Donna Strickland, from Canada, is only the third woman in history to win the award, along with Marie Curie, who won in 1903, and Maria Goeppert-Mayer, who was awarded the prize in 1963.

Cristiano Ronaldo rape allegation: Nike expresses deep concern


Nike has said it is "deeply concerned" by rape allegations against footballer Cristiano Ronaldo. The US sportswear giant - which has a contract worth a reported $1bn (£768m) with Ronaldo - said it would "continue to closely monitor the situation", the Associated Press reports.  EA Sports, which also has a contract with Ronaldo, made similar comments.
Ronaldo, 33, earlier "firmly" denied assaulting Kathryn Mayorga at a Las Vegas hotel in 2009.
Ms Mayorga, a 34-year-old US former teacher, was inspired to speak out by the #MeToo movement, her lawyer said.

Health workers tackling the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been severely injured after being attacked by angry residents who believe the virus is not real. 
 Four local health workers from the Red Cross were attacked in the city of Butembo as they were transporting dead bodies for burial. Residents started throwing rocks at their car and two of the health workers were severely injured.

Juventus striker, Cristiano Ronaldo has again denied claims he raped a model nine years ago inside a Las Vegas hotel room. This comes just two days after Las Vegas police reopened an investigation into Kathryn Mayorga's claims that Ronaldo raped her in 2009  Mayorga, a 34-year-old teacher who was an aspiring model at the time of the alleged assault, alleged that the football star raped her in a bathroom at the Palms Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas in the early hours of June 13, 2009.

Woman sues Facebook ‘for enabling sex trafficking’


A woman in Texas claiming that she was raped, beaten and sex trafficked at the age of 15 by a pimp who posed as a Facebook “friend,” has filed suit against the social network, alleging its executives knew minors were being lured into the sex trade on their platform. 

Denmark to ban petrol, diesel cars by 2030


Denmark has proposed a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 and hybrid from 2035, joining international efforts to promote electric-only vehicles to reduce air pollution and combat climate change.
The government has previously come under fire for increasing tax on electric cars in 2016, sending sales down from more than 3 percent of all new cars to almost zero, but now aims to follow the example being set in an increasing number of countries.

French helicopter jailbreak gangster captured


Rédoine Faïd, a French gangster who broke out of jail using a hijacked helicopter in July, has been recaptured, police sources say. The country's most wanted fugitive, he was detained north of Paris, reportedly with his brother and two men. Faïd, 46, is a fan of gangster films, which he credits with teaching him how to pull off raids.
