Nearly 100 killed in ambulance blast in Afghan capital Kabul

A bomb hidden in an ambulance killed at least 95 people and wounded about 158 in the Afghan capital Kabul on Saturday when it blew up at a police checkpoint in a busy part of the city that was crowded with pedestrians at the time of the attack. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the suicide blast, a week after they claimed an attack on the Intercontinental Hotel in which more than 20 people were killed.
An interior ministry spokesman blamed the Haqqani network, a militant group affiliated with the Taliban which Afghan and Western officials consider to be behind many of the biggest attacks on urban targets in Afghanistan. As medical teams struggled to handle the casualties pouring in, some of the wounded were laid out in the open, with intravenous drips set up next to them in hospital gardens.

New Google Chrome update will allow you to mute sites that have annoying auto-play ads - and block those that 'follow you' around the web

Few things are as rage-inducing as a website that suddenly begins blaring a noisy, full-page advertisement that you can't close out of.  Luckily, Google announced Thursday that it's releasing a new version of Chrome to users this week, called Chrome 64, that works to help solve that issue.   Users can just right-click any offending tab and select 'mute site.'
Prior to the update, a tab would un-mute every time the user would return to the window.  Now, the updated mute feature lets you mute the website for good.  The fix also eliminates the issue of 'reminder ads' or advertisements that stalk you around the web.

Doomsday Clock advances to 11:58 P.M., closest since 1950s

The Doomsday Clock, a potent symbol of scientific concerns about humanity’s possible annihilation, was advanced by 30 seconds on Thursday, to 2 minutes to midnight, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists announced in Washington. The last time the clock was moved so close to midnight was in 1953, during the Cold War.
“In 2017, world leaders failed to respond effectively to the looming threats of nuclear war and climate change, making the world security situation more dangerous than it was a year ago — and as dangerous as it has been since World War II,” the bulletin’s science and security board, which oversees the clock, said in a statement.

Liberia imposes a year ban on Female Genital Mutilation

Liberia has imposed a one-year ban on female genital mutilation - a highly contentious issue in the country. But campaigners said on Thursday it may not be enforceable and urged new president George Weah to push for a permanent law. The ban came into force after former leader Ellen Johnson Sirleaf signed an executive order late last week before stepping down.
But the move received little publicity, overshadowed by this week’s inauguration of Johnson Sirleaf’s successor, former soccer star George Weah. The ban makes it an offence to perform FGM on anyone under 18 but it can still be carried out on adults with their consent. Campaigners said FGM should be banned outright as even women who gave consent often did so under pressure.

One dead, two wounded in Amsterdam shooting

A shooting in downtown Amsterdam on Friday night left one person dead and two injured, Dutch police said.
"One person has died and two wounded, a man and a young woman, were taken to hospital after a shooting on Grote Wittenburgerstraat, in the city centre," Amsterdam police spokesman Leo Dortland told AFP.
While police refused to name the victim, Dutch media reported that he was a 17-year-old boy of Moroccan origin. He was reportedly shot near a children's playground in front of a community centre where children were taking cookery and kickboxing classes.
A wave of fear spread quickly throughout the Dutch capital, very popular with tourists, but Dortland said: "This is clearly not a terror attack, but a criminal incident."
Shots were fired from an automatic weapon, according to shocked witnesses who said they saw a hooded man run away after his victim fell to the ground, Dutch media reported.
"Many rumours are circulating, we must be very careful what people say, and not give in to the emotion," the police spokesman added.

Second-hand toys could harm children, scientists discover

Plastic used in some second-hand toys could pose a health risk for children as they don't meet the most up-to-date safety guidelines, a study has found. Scientists tested 200 used plastic toys they found in nurseries, thrift shops and homes across England's south-west for nine hazardous elements. Twenty toys had traces of all nine elements, with some concentrations high enough to fail European standards. But experts said it would be difficult to quantify the risk.
"Lego bricks from the 70s and 80s are the big fail," said Dr Andrew Turner, of the University of Plymouth, who conducted the study. "Toys in those days weren't tested and now we're using them and handing them down."
