U.S. judge in Hawaii extends halt on Trump travel ban

A federal judge in Hawaii on Wednesday extended the order blocking President Trump's controversial travel ban until the state's lawsuit is resolved. U.S. District Judge Derrick Watson issued the ruling after hearing arguments. State Attorney General Douglas Chin argued that the ban's message is like a "neon sign flashing 'Muslim ban, Muslim ban'" that the government did not turn off.  Hawaii argued two key points about the travel ban: that it discriminates against Muslims and that it will negatively impact the state's tourism industry.
The state argued that extending the temporary order ensures the constitutional rights of American Muslims are vindicated after "repeated stops and starts of the last two months."

Ford recalls 570K vehicles for fire risk, door latch trouble

Ford is recalling more than 570,000 vehicles in North America and Europe to fix separate problems that can cause engine fires and doors to fly open unexpectedly. The recalls will hit the company’s bottom line in the first quarter of this year. Ford said in a Wednesday filing with securities regulators that the recalls will cut pretax earnings by $295 million. The engine fire recall covers over 360,000 vehicles in North America and Europe. In North America it includes Escape SUVs from the 2014 model year, plus the 2014 and 2015 compact Fiesta ST, the 2013 and 2014 Fusion midsize car and the 2013 through 2015 Transit Connect small van.
In Europe, the recall covers the 2010 through 2015 C-Max hybrid and Focus small car, and the 2013 through 2015 Transit Connect van. All the vehicles have 1.6-Liter four-cylinder turbocharged engines.
A lack of coolant circulation could cause the engine to overheat, causing a crack in the cylinder head, according to Ford. If that happens, pressurized oil can leak through the crack, and if it hits a hot surface, could cause an engine fire. The company says it has 29 reports of fires in the U.S. and Canada, but no injuries. Owners can continue to drive the vehicles safely and park them in garages or other structures, spokeswoman Elizabeth Weigandt said.

Ivanka Trump to become official White House employee

Ivanka Trump is officially joining her father's administration as an unpaid employee, after her plans to serve in a more informal capacity were questioned by ethics experts. The first daughter announced Wednesday that she will serve as an unpaid employee in the White House, saying she had "heard the concerns some have with my advising the president in my personal capacity."
She added that she has been "working in good faith with the White House Counsel and my personal counsel to address the unprecedented nature of my role."
The news about Ivanka Trump was first reported by The New York Times. A White House official said her title will be assistant to the president. In a statement, the White House said it was "pleased that Ivanka Trump has chosen to take this step in her unprecedented role as first daughter and in support of the president."
Trump previously announced she was getting a West Wing office and security clearance, but would not officially join the administration. That decision had drawn criticism from ethics experts. Several attorneys and government watchdog leaders last week wrote a letter to White House Counsel Don McGahn, asking him to reconsider his approval of Ivanka Trump serving her father without becoming an official government employee. Such a designation carries with it the requirement to follow an array of transparency and ethical provisions, including a law prohibiting conflicts of interest. Trump had said she'd voluntarily follow such provisions.

4 dead, 21 injured in Mexico prison riot

                                                                            (C)Reuters

State officials say inmates rioted at a psychiatric and medical block in a prison in northern Mexico, broke into a prison pharmacy and took drugs that caused the deaths of four of them. Twenty-one more were injured, including one guard, according to a Nuevo Leon state government statement on Wednesday. The complex chain of events at the prison in Cadereyta started earlier this week when inmates protested a new program to inspect visitors with a type of X-ray machine to prevent contraband being smuggled into the facility. That prompted a smaller disturbance.
But on Tuesday state security spokesman Aldo Fasci said about 56 inmates at a psychiatric block burned about 200 cells and furnishings. Some then broke into the prison pharmacy, where four of them apparently overdosed on medications stored there. However, it was unclear whether all four died from medications; local media reported three of the bodies were charred and thus may have died in the fires.

French artist turns chicken for three-week egg hatching

French artist Abraham Poincheval - who has already spent two weeks living inside a stuffed bear - plans to commune with the humble chicken for his latest performance stunt. How? By incubating 10 eggs with his own body heat.  He will live inside a glass vivarium until his charges hatch, watched by visitors to the Palais de Tokyo museum in Paris. Poincheval expects the process to last between 21 and 26 days.
"I will, broadly speaking, become a chicken," he said.
The artist, 44, began the performance - titled "Oeuf" (Egg) - on Wednesday. Rather than sitting on the eggs directly, he is deploying a chair with a container under its seat. Poincheval will be wrapped in an insulating blanket designed by Korean artist Seglui Lee, to keep his body temperature high. He also plans to eat "heating" foods like ginger to generate more body warmth - and will have provisions in easy reach.

Italian artisan crafts the world’s first 24-carat gold shoes costing £21,000

Italian cobbler Antonio Vietri has come up with a world first, 24-carat gold shoes. And they're a snip at just 25,000 euros (£21,000) for a pair.  Each pair is unique, made with 230 grams of gold and made to measure using 3D foot scanners. And these being no ordinary shoes, they are delivered by helicopter in a black lacquered box. Vietri, from Turin, thinks his blue or black suede moccasins with stitched gold-plated uppers will appeal to wealthy Arab customers from the oil-rich Gulf. He said: 'These are the first shoes in the world in 24-carat gold. The particularity of these shoes is that gold is not simply applied, it is not like an accessory or a button. Gold is an integral part of the shoe.'

African passports: The powerful and the weak

The US President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order that barred citizens of seven nations from accessing a US visa to enter the country, effective immediately. Among these are citizens of the African countries Libya, Sudan and Somalia. These countries already have some of Africa’s weakest passports, according to the Arton Capital’s Passport Index, which ranks national passports by how easily they can visit other territories – either without a visa or with a visa on arrival. There are only 37 countries globally a Libyan passport has easy access to, while there are 36 for Sudan and 30 for Somalia (which is ranked the country with the weakest passport in Africa and fifth-weakest in the world).
Interestingly these African countries are also some of the world’s least welcoming – meaning they don’t allow many others in visa-free or visa-on-arrival. Somalia is one of only three countries in the world that does not offer any foreign travellers hassle-free entry. Libya only allows three countries (Jordon, Turkey and Tunisia) easy passage, while Sudan admits 10 countries.

What’s the best age to become a mother?

But what’s the best age to start bringing up a child? According to research at Aarhus University in Denmark, it may be a bit older – mid-30s upwards. In a study of 4,741 Danish mothers, being older was associated with raising children with fewer behavioural, social and emotional difficulties at ages seven and 11. In Denmark, the average age for having children is 30.9, and the proportion of babies born to mothers over the age of 40 has quadrupled since 1985. Data from the Office for National Statistics says that the average age of women having children in England and Wales was 30.3 years, with rates in older women rising since the mid-1970s.
Women who delay childbirth are often (but not always ) more educated, financially more secure and in more stable relationships than younger mothers. Could these factors alone explain differences in child development?
