Hospital nurse kills at least 90 patients by injecting them with heart medication and causing fatal heart attacks
A hospital nurse who admitted to killing multiple critically ill patients, revealed that he wanted to show colleagues his resuscitation skills, according to police in Germany. Delmenhorst police said that 40-year-old Niels Hogel, might be responsible for at least 90 murders across three countries, Germany, Poland, and Turkey.
Hogel was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of six counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder and one charge of battery. Police exhumed 130 bodies for testing and have determined that 90 of them died as a result of getting an overdose of heart medication.
Prosecutors told the court that Hogel injected critically ill patients with large amounts of heart medication in order to get them to have heart attacks. Hogel then attempted to revive the victims in order to show off his skills to colleagues. However, his skills did not work at least 90 times.
Hogel was finally stopped after a colleague caught him in the act of injecting heart medication in a patient. Hogel used five different heart drugs, ajmaline, sotalol, lidocaine, amiodarone and calcium chloride. He killed patients while working at hospitals in Delmenhorst, and Oldenburg. Investigators believe that Hogel chose his victims at random.
