8 dead after truck plows into people in New York City
In what New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called a "cowardly act of terror," a man driving a rental truck struck and killed eight people on a bike path Tuesday afternoon. The sprawling crime scene runs about 10 blocks along the West Side Highway, a few blocks away from One World Trade Center. Witness Andrew Howell said he was walking along the path when he saw a truck plow into two cyclists riding about 20 feet in front of him; he said the impact sent one of the victims straight up into the air, and the man was motionless when he landed back on the ground. The driver then continued at a high speed before crashing, Howell said. A uniformed police officer was credited with stopping the carnage.

Arsène Wenger burning to win Premier League again before leaving Arsenal
Arsène Wenger has described Brexit as an example of knee-jerk British society, in which the heat of the moment is all consuming and the longer-term consequences an afterthought. The Arsenal manager made a call for perspective and substance to return to football and society but he fears that his is most likely a voice in the wind.
“Five hundred years ago the target for people was to be a saint,” Wenger said. “Fifty years ago it was to be a hero in war. Today it is to be a billionaire or, even more, a celebrity. It is instant and here now. But it has to be sustained by something. “In the modern game we have lost the perspective of what is important and what is not. It is always here and now, and it’s for ever. The now is permanent. The judgment is permanent and for ever. But it is in society, as well.

Guatemala judge orders former president tried for corruption
A judge in Guatemala has sent former President Otto Perez Molina and his vice president to trial for corruption involving an alleged scheme in which businesses paid bribes to avoid customs duties. Judge Miguel Angel Galvez's decision Friday comes more than two years after Guatemala's Public Prosecutor's Office and the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala, or CICIG, released an investigation into the alleged scheme, called "La Linea" or "The Line." Prosecutors said the corruption ring defrauded the state of several million dollars.
Both Perez Molina and former Vice President Roxana Baldetti have denied the charges against them. Among the evidence provided were thousands of wiretaps of officials in their government apparently agreeing to distribute bribes. Perez Molina, who took office in 2012, was jailed in 2015 after massive street protests.
Harvey Weinstein banned for life from the Producers Guild of America
Harvey Weinstein has been banned for life from the Producers Guild of America, the organization announced Monday. Earlier this month, the guild voted to begin termination proceedings, but gave Weinstein time to respond to the allegations made against him.

As stated previously, the PGA's Officers and National Board of Directors have created the Anti-Sexual Harassment Task Force specifically charged with researching and proposing substantive and effective solutions to combat sexual harassment in the entertainment industry.”
China is considering a three-year jail term for people who disrespect the national anthem and flag in public
China’s state media reports that the parliament is considering jail terms of up to three years for people who disrespect the national anthem or flag in public. Back in September, China passed a new law mandating up to 15 days in police detention for those who mock the “March of the Volunteers” national anthem, a law that also covers the Chinese territories of Hong Kong and Macau.
Parliament is now looking at whether to amend China’s Criminal Law to include criminal penalties for disrespect of the national anthem, including intentionally distorting the lyrics or tune, Xinhua said. The tougher penalties also apply to desecration of the national flag, or emblem, including burning, defacing or trampling on it in public, the report said.

The NHS offers bowel screening to those aged 55, but the latest study concludes that people over 45 should be tested. They found that neoplasia, abnormal tissue, increases by 400 per cent in those aged 45-49 compared to those aged 40-44. The mean number of polyps - an abnormality - and those with more than one adenoma - a benign tumour - also increased by 95.8% and 95.4% respectively between the 40-44 and 45-49 age groups. This was far more substantial than the increase between the 45-49 and 50-54 age groups, which was 19.1% and 11.5% respectively.

The Pastor, who was chosen in 2011 as “Britain’s Most Inspirational Black Person“, allegedly pays himself and other senior Pastors in the church a six-figure salary in Pounds.

North Korea calls Trump ‘mentally ill’ in propaganda leaflets dropped over Seoul
(C)Reuters |
North Korea has dropped insulting messages about US President Donald Trump over the South Korean capital, Seoul. The fliers were stuffed into balloons and contained notes branding the US president as “mentally ill” and a “dotard,” meaning someone who is weak or senile. The insults appear to be Kim Jong-un’s response to comments delivered by Trump to the UN General Assembly last month in which the US president referred to the North Korean leader as a “rocket man.”
Pictures of the fliers were posted on Twitter by James Pearson, the North Korea correspondent for Reuters. The messages follow another propaganda drop earlier this month, when posters bearing ghoulish depictions of Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in were sent over the demilitarized zone. Another shows Trump being stamped on by a North Korean soldier.

The announcement is in line with powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's ambitious reform drive shaking up the ultra-conservative kingdom, including the historic decision to allow women to drive from next June.

Afternoon heart surgery 'is 50% more successful'
Heart surgery is 50 per cent more successful if done in the afternoon, a major study has found. Experts believe this is because the heart is better at repairing itself later in the day. The human body clock – known as the ‘circadian rhythm’ – is still adjusting from the sleep stage to awake stage in the morning, but by the afternoon, it is better equipped to deal with a traumatic event such as open heart surgery. The researchers, whose work is published in the respected Lancet medical journal, called for hospitals to move operations to the afternoon in light of the findings.

Doctors reveals why you shouldn't use toilet paper to clean faeces
Experts warn that toilet paper does little to remove faeces and the United States is one country that hasn't improved its sanitation when wiping. While countries such as Japan, Italy and Greece use bidets in the toilets as a way to keep the anus clean, the US has mostly relied on toilet paper as the norm to keep that area clean. But doctors say excessive wiping could cause health problems such as anal fissures and urinary tract infections. Though the suggestion may sound absurd, celebrities such as will.i.am, Will Smith and Terrence Howard have been vouching for baby wipes instead of tissue for years - with Smith even hailing the habit as 'special and incredible'.
