UK: Court rules dogs have right to pee at lampposts
Dogs in the United Kingdom have won the right to pee on public streets without any consequences to its owners. The ruling came after a dog owner brought the case to court when the city council introduced a bill to criminalize dog owners if their pets urinate on city properties like at lampposts or on the private property that belonged to members of the public who oppose it. Caroline Summers from Richmond, London, filed the lawsuit and fought the Public Spaces Protection Order for the right of the dog to pee whenever it wants to and the High Court ruled in her favor.
The Public Spaces Protection Order gave local authorities the power to issue blanket bans on certain activities on public properties.
This law would also allow the city to punish dog owners if their dogs caused annoyance to another person or animal, caused damage to any Council structure, equipment, tree, turf, or other Council property.
The Public Spaces Protection Order already led to dogs being banned from many parks and open spaces in the country.
