 Barcelona forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and his family were victims of a violent robbery at his house in the Spanish city in the early hours of Monday morning, August 29.
El Pais reports that several armed men climbed into his garden at the complex in Castelldefels and threatened him with firearms and iron bars.
Aubameyang was assaulted by the men in front of his wife Alysha Behague and two children, Curtys, 11, and Pierre, six, the report claims, with the criminals escaping in a white Audi A3 after gaining access to the player's safe. Behague quickly alerted Spanish police, who are now searching for the culprits.

 Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly expressed anger about having to take a 25 percent pay cut after Manchester United missed out on a Champions League spot.
 The 37-year-old made it clear earlier this summer that he wanted to leave the club in search of Champions League football following the club's disastrous season.
According to The Sunday Times, Ronaldo expressed his anger at having to take the pay cut - which was written into his contract - after scoring 18 Premier League goals last season.

 Johnny Depp was also a crowd pleaser as he made a virtual appearance as a moon man while Black Eyed Peas star Fergie also made a return to the stage alongside Jack Harlow.
And Snoop Dogg and Eminem also put on an extravagant performance as they joked about smoking a huge joint.

Measles outbreak in Zimbabwe kills 157 un-vaccinated children

 

 A measles outbreak in Zimbabwe has killed 157 children, most of whom were unvaccinated due to their family’s religious beliefs, officials said.
The measles outbreak was first reported in the eastern Manicaland province in early April and has since spread to all parts of the country.
At least 2,056 cases have been reported and virtually all of the deaths have been children who were not vaccinated, Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said.
Zimbabwe’s Cabinet has invoked a law used to respond to disasters to deal with the outbreak, she said.
The government says it is embarking on a mass vaccination campaign targeting children aged between 6 months and 15 years old and is engaging traditional and faith leaders to support the drive.

Hong Kong’s gay community has suffered a fresh legal setback after the Court of Appeal rejected an appeal against the city’s long-held denial of same-sex marriage to those who have legally wed overseas.
The lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender activists have won multiple court victories in recent years against the discrimination that is currently baked into Hong Kong’s laws.
But a ruling on Wednesday, August 24,  means any lifting of the current ban on gay marriage will likely need to come via legislation and not the courts.

Arsenal placed on a UEFA watchlist with Barcelona and PSG for potentially breaching financial fair play rules

 

 Arsenal have been placed on the FFP watchlist by UEFA after reporting a loss of £213million over the past three seasons.
UEFA rules only allow € 30 million (£25million) over a three-year period, but UEFA allow covid-related losses, and 'healthy' spending on women's football and the academy to be written off. The Gunners have spent heavily over the past two seasons.
Last summer, Arsenal were the Premier League's top spenders, parting way with over £150million on Ben White and Aaron Ramsdale among others. This summer, Arsenal have purchased Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko, and Fabio Vieira.

Days after his transfer, Pogba sustained a knee injury that ruled him out of action.

 The World Health Organisation has recognized Togo as the first country globally to eliminate four Neglected Tropical Diseases.
The WHO made this known during its Regional Committee for Africa meeting held in Lomé on Monday, August 22.
Between 2011 and 2022, Togo has successfully eliminated dracunculiasis (Guinea worm disease), elephantiasis (lymphatic filariasis),  human African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness), and trachoma.
NTDs are a group of 20 preventable and treatable diseases, but 1.7 billion people worldwide still require NTD interventions. Many NTDs debilitate, disfigure and disable by preventing children from going to school and adults from being able to work.

 Jacob's mother Sarah Kelly says that she declined the opportunity to meet Ronaldo after the incident but was then called on the phone by the Portuguese forward in a call that lasted 10-minute which he pleaded for sympathy.

 Ukraine has kick-started its football league's season, with a ceremony paying tribute to those killed in the war and the soldiers who remain on the frontline.
The opening-day game between Shakhtar Donetsk and Metalist 1925 from Kharkiv marked the first top-level football match played in the country since Russia's invasion in February.
Kyiv's Olympic Stadium has staged some of the biggest games in European football but never in an empty stadium and Tuesday's match featured two teams from the war-torn east of the country - one from Donetsk and one from Kharkiv.

Kenya's Odinga challenges presidential poll result in Supreme court

 


Kenya's veteran opposition leader, Raila Odinga, filed a petition to the country’s top court on Monday challenging the result of the August 9 election that handed victory to his rival, William Ruto.
 In the petition, Odinga asks the court to nullify the vote's outcome on several grounds, including a mismatch between the turnout figures and the result, and failure by the commission to tally ballots from 27 constituencies as required by law.
"The final result... was therefore not complete, accurate, verifiable or accountable and cannot be the basis for a valid and legitimate declaration," the petition said.

US infectious disease expert, Dr Anthony Fauci to step down from his role after 38 years

 

 After nearly four decades, Dr. Anthony Fauci says he'll be departing his roles as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and as chief medical officer to US President Joe Biden at the end of this year.
Fauci known as the US' top infectious disease expert has served at NIAID for 38 years starting in former President Ronald Reagan's administration, a role in which he helped lead the US response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, as well as West Nile virus, the anthrax attacks, pandemic influenza, various bird influenza threats, Ebola and Zika.

Singapore to end ban on gay sex after years of debate

 

 The Singaporean government will decriminalise sex between men, the prime minister announced on Sunday, August 21, effectively making it legal to be homosexual in the city-state.
 Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the government would repeal Section 377A of the penal code, a colonial-era law that criminalises sex between men, adding that society was becoming more accepting of gay people.
 "I believe this is the right thing to do, and something that most Singaporeans will now accept," he said in his annual National Day rally speech.

The 36-year-old went on to make 69 appearances over two seasons with the Spanish giants before sustaining a knee injury that ruled him out of the 2021-2022 campaign.
Sociedad made the decision to release Monreal in May 2022 and the Spanish defender decided to hang up his boots as a result.  

US carries out nuclear capable intercontinental missile test after delaying launch for months over tensions with China and Russia

Estonia struck by "extensive" cyberattack, reportedly claimed by Russian hackers



Estonia was hit by extensive cyberattacks on Wednesday, Luukas Ilves, the country's chief information officer and undersecretary for digital transformation, revealed on Thursday. According to Estonian Public Broadcasting (ERR), the Russian-backed hacker group Killnet has claimed responsibility for the attacks, which targeted both public and private institutions.
They came a day after a Soviet tank statue was removed in the Eastern border city of Narva, and a day ahead of the suspension of Russian tourist visas on August 18.
“The attacks were ineffective ... With some brief and minor exceptions, websites remained fully available throughout the day. The attack has gone largely unnoticed in Estonia,” Ilves said on Facebook. “As Gov't CIO, I slept well.”

Europe can't decide if it wants to punish ordinary Russians for Putin's war

 

 Finland, a country that shares an 830-mile-long border with Russia, announced this week that it is to halve its cap on the number of visa applications from Russian citizens.
Currently, 1,000 Russians can apply for Finnish visas each day, but as of September 1 that number will drop to 500. Jussi Tanner, director general for consular services at Finland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told CNN that a maximum of 20% of those slots will be allocated for tourist visas, meaning no more than 100 tourist visas will be available per day.
The move comes after Estonia, another European Union nation that borders Russia, banned even Russians who already had visas from entering the country. According to Reuters, that amounts to 50,000 people.

 LeBron James has reportedly inked a two-year, $97.1 million contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers. According to multiple reports, the deal includes a player option for the 2024-2025 season and makes James the NBA's highest-paid player ever, with $532 million in guaranteed money. Kevin Durant previously held that distinction, with $509 million in guaranteed contracts.
The four-time NBA champion can choose to become a free agent in 2024, or wait until 2025 to sign with whichever team drafts his 17-year-old son, Bronny, who is expected to enter the league that season. James has repeatedly expressed a desire to play alongside Bronny, who is entering his senior season at LA's Sierra Canyon School.  The reporter has been covering sports for the outlet for over two decades.
 Voepel said he decided to open up about his true self this week because he's slated to receive the Naismith Hall of Fame's Gowdy Award next month and he wanted to be there "as authentic self."
 Voepel said: "Fear can keep us paralyzed for decades, especially when we think we will lose all that is dear to us, including career.

 Premier League champions, Manchester City have confirmed the capture of Spanish left-back, Sergio Gomez from Belgian club Anderlecht.
Gomez started his career in Barcelona's La Masia Academy as an attacking midfielder before moving on to Borussia Dortmund.
City will pay an initial £11m ($13m) fee for the 21-year-old with the potential for the price to rise further in unspecified add-ons.

 A bombing at a mosque in the Afghan capital of Kabul during evening prayers on Wednesday killed at least 10 people, including a prominent cleric, and wounded at least 27, an eyewitness and police said.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, the latest to strike the country in the year since the Taliban seized power. Several children were reported to be among the wounded.
The Islamic State group’s local affiliate has stepped up attacks targeting the Taliban and civilians since the former insurgents’ takeover last August as U.S. and NATO troops were in the final stages of their withdrawal from the country. Last week, the IS claimed responsibility for killing a prominent Taliban cleric at his religious center in Kabul.

Scotland becomes the first country to offer tampons and pads for free, officials say

 

 Period products, including tampons and sanitary pads, are now free of cost in Scotland to anyone who needs them.
Starting this week, menstrual products will be available in places like pharmacies and community centers, thanks to legislation approved by Scotland's parliament in 2020.
"Providing access to free period products is fundamental to equality and dignity, and removes the financial barriers to accessing them," said Social Justice Secretary Shona Robison in a statement, calling the move "more important than ever" in an era of rising costs of living.
Proud of what we have achieved in Scotland. We are the first but won't be the last," said Scottish parliament member Monica Lennon, who began floating the proposal in 2016.

 Local reports said that 10 monkeys had been poisoned in less than a week in the city of Sao Jose do Rio Preto, in Sao Paulo state.
The World Health Organization expressed sorrow on Tuesday, August 9,  for the killing of the animals in Brazil amid growing fears of contagion.
 'People have to know that the transmission we see now is among humans,' said Margaret Harris, a WHO spokeswoman, during a press conference in Geneva.
Brazil counts more than 1,700 cases of monkeypox, according to the WHO.

 India's Football Federation has been suspended by the world's football governing body, FIFA due to "undue influence from third parties".
 The suspension by FIFA threatens the country's hosting of the Under-17 Woms World Cup, in October.
India's highest court had disbanded the All India Football Federation (AIFF) in May and appointed a three-member committee to govern the sport despite FIFA rules stating that Fifa's member federations must be free from legal and political interference.

 The world's richest man, Elon Musk has sold another 7.92 million shares in  electric car maker, Tesla worth around $6.88bn (£5.7bn). The sales took place after the firm's annual shareholder meeting last week, regulatory filings show.
The multi-billionaire is currently embroiled in a legal battle with Twitter after saying last month he would pull out of a deal to buy it.
Musk says he needs the money from the Tesla shares in case he is forced to buy Twitter for $44bn.
According to six filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, the latest transactions were carried out on 5, 8 and 9 August.

 A former Twitter employee has been found guilty of spying for Saudi Arabia and releasing private user information of those who publicly criticized the country in exchange for hundreds of thousands of dollars
 Ahmad Abouammo, 44, used his position as an engineer at Twitter to access confidential data about users, their email addresses, phone numbers and IP addresses that can disclose their location, prosecutors claimed.
He then passed that information on to an official linked to the Saudi royal family in exchange for a luxury watch and hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Memphis hospital in lockdown after eight people are injured in a shootout at the ER

 

 At least eight people have been injured in a shooting at a hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
The shooting occurred outside the entrance to the city's Methodist North Hospital emergency room, with police arriving at the scene at around 12:47 a.m. on Tuesday, August 16.
Police confirmed at least eight people had been shot in the incident, according to ABC24. The local news outlet reported that a silver sedan had stopped at the median of the intersection Austin Peay and Walter K Singleton parkway.
The vehicle had at least 20 bullet holes in its driver's side, the report said.
The hospital and the adjacent streets are believed to be on lockdown. It is unclear if any suspects have been apprehended.

Segato previously said his body inspirations were Arnold Schwarzenegger and fictional characters like the Hulk.
“They call me Hulk, Schwarzenegger and He-Man all the time and I like that. I’ve doubled my biceps but I still want to be bigger,” he said in 2016, according to the Daily Mail.
Six years ago, the São Paulo native was warned he would face amputation, or at least nerve damage and muscle disfigurement, as a result of the injections if he continued to use them.

McDonald’s worker shot over cold French fries

 

 
A McDonald’s worker in Brooklyn, New York, was shot during a fight over cold French fries.
 The 23-year-old victim was working at the fast-food joint at 1531 Fulton St. in Bedford-Stuyvesant around 7 p.m. Monday, August 1, when a female customer started hassling him over her fries.
The woman, who complained that her fries were cold, was FaceTiming her 20-year-old son during the argument, and the son soon stormed into the restaurant and began fighting with the employee.
 They took the fight outside the restaurant and the son brought out a gun and shot the worker in the neck, cops said on Tuesday, August 2.
The man is currently fighting for his life in a hospital.

Fire kills at least 41 at Egyptian Coptic Church, mostly children

 


An electrical fire swept through an Egyptian Coptic Christian church during Mass on Sunday, causing a stampede and killing at least 41 people, most of them children and many suffering from smoke inhalation.
The blaze started just before 9 a.m. in the Abu Sifin church in the city of Giza where about up to 1,000 people had gathered.
The fire blocked an entrance to the church, causing the stampede, the two sources said, adding that most of those killed were children.
"People were gathering on the third and fourth floor, and we saw smoke coming from the second floor. People rushed to go down the stairs and started falling on top of each other," said worshipper Yasir Munir.

Raila Odinga loses another Kenyan election, fears of civil unrest

 

 Raila Odinga lost yet another Kenyan election according to the results of the Independent Electoral Bureau Commission (IEBC), reports News24. He lost to William Ruto, who won 50.5% of the vote.
Odinga came second with a frustratingly close result of 48.8% of the vote. This becomes Odinga’s fifth presidential election loss.
The first time he ran in the presidential election was in 1997. Since then, he ran in 2007, 2013, 2017 and now in 2022. The 77-year old candidate’s running mate for this election was former Justice Minister Martha Karua.
Many believe he chose Karua as a running partner to appeal to women voters, reports The Africa Report. But it wasn’t enough to garner enough support to win the election.
Further, the election saw a drastic decrease in voter turn-out. It is believed young Kenyans chose to abstain from voting due to their previous leaders’ inability to deliver on promises.

 Sean Hall and Nathan Butler, who wrote 3LW's 2000 song "Playas Gon' Play," are accusing the superstar of using their words.
In a Monday August 8 court filing, Swift's legal team insisted that she wrote 2014's "Shake It Off" by herself, while her attorney accused Hall and Butler of trying to cash in on the song's huge success.

Woman left with a 'lizard' neck after botched skin-tightening procedure

 


A woman has been left with a neck looking like a 'lizard' after a botched cosmetic procedure.
59-year-old Jayne Bowman from Hampshire, paid £500 to have fibroblast work to tighten the skin on her neck after a diet.
During fibroblast therapy, a device zaps a high-frequency electric current through the skin to encourage tissue regeneration.
However, the treatment Jayne received from a beautician she found on Facebook left her with hundreds of red blotches and scars.
While the dots eventually faded, the experience proved an ordeal for Jayne, who wants to spread the word and is now calling for more regulations around the procedure.

 A small plane crash landed on a California highway on Tuesday, August 9, hitting a truck full of people before bursting into flames.
 The plane crashed into the eastbound lanes of the freeway of the 91 Freeway in Riverside County near Lincoln Avenue just after 12:30 p.m., the California Highway Patrol told KTLA.
Footage shows the plane drop out of the sky and touch down in the middle of traffic leaving behind a trail of burning jet fuel. Video released by the Corona Fire Department shows the plane engulfed in flames and emitting massive plumes of smoke before a firefighter douses the aircraft with water. Another photo from the department shows the charred remains of the plane on the highway. The pilot and passenger onboard were both able to get themselves out of the plane safely CHP said.

Girl chews through restraints to escape from kidnapper then leads police to hideout where there were decomposing bodies

 

 A young girl chewed through her restraints  breaking the braces on her teeth, to escape a week of captivity in Alabama, after being tied up to bedposts.
 The 12-year-old girl was walking along a road in Dadeville, Alabama, on early Monday morning, August 1, when a driver saw the distressed girl and picked her up.
She told police she had chewed her way out after being tied to bedposts for nearly a week - after she was assaulted and given alcohol.
 She led officers to the home where she had been held captive.
It was the home of José Paulino Pascual-Reyes, 37, in Alabama.
 When police arrived, they found two decomposing bodies.

Five more Manchester City stars are dragged into Benjamin Mendy's rape trial

 

 The jurors in the rape trial of Manchester City player Benjamin Mendy were today quizzed on whether they knew five other stars.
 The names of Raheem Sterling, Jack Grealish, Kyle Walker, Riyad Mahrez and John Stones - who all either play for or previously played for City,  were read to the panel of jurors at Chester Crown Court being selected for the trial.
The potential jurors, selected from a pool of 38, heard the list of people who may be witnesses or could be referred to during the trial and were asked whether they had any connection to them or knew them personally.

One dead, 6-year-old injured as gunman opens fire at Atlanta Park, striking 6

 

 One person was killed and a 6-year-old child was left in critical condition after a gunman opened fire inside an Atlanta park Sunday evening, August 7.
 The shooting was sparked by an argument during a baseball game that was being played inside Rosa L. Burney park.
A man in his 30s was fatally shot and five others, including a child, were struck by gunfire during the 7 p.m. shooting.

 China has discovered a new, potentially fatal virus within its borders, which experts say could trigger another pandemic.
 The Langya Henipavirus, referred to as "Langya," has already infected 35 people, according to Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control.
Authorities said the patients did not have close contact with each other or common exposure history, suggesting that human infections might be sporadic.
 Meanwhile, Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control (CDC) are currently establishing a nucleic acid testing method to identify and check the spread of the virus.
