US deputy attorney general resigns


US Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appointed Special Counsel Robert Mueller in May 2017 to investigate links between the Russian government and President Donald Trump’s campaign, said on Monday he was resigning from his post.
Rosenstein’s departure, effective May 11, was not a surprise. He had been expected to step down in March, and Trump has already nominated Deputy Transportation Secretary Jeffrey Rosen to replace him.

Patricia Hill, 69, a woman from Arkansas, United States, ‘flew into a rage’ and killed her husband after seeing that a pornography channel had been added to their satellite television subscription. 
 She is currently standing trial for capital murder in the death of her husband, Frank Hill, 65, who was found dead at their home.

Barcelona crowned La Liga champions after Lionel Messi comes off the bench and scored the only goal


Spanish club, Barcelona have been crowned champions of Spain after they clinched the La Liga title for the 2018-19 season on Saturday night. The Spanish gaint defeated Levante 1-0 after Argentine striker Lionel Messi came from the bench to score in the 62nd minute to seal the La Liga title. This is Barcelona's eighth league title in the last 11 years and 26th overall.

President Trump calls Jussie Smollett’s case a 'disgrace to our nation'


President Donald Trump has lashed out at "Empire" star Jussie Smollett at a rally on Saturday, calling him a "third-rate actor" and excoriating him for allegedly staging a hate crime against himself.
"We may have the greatest theme in the history of politics: It's called Make America Great Again.
MAGA. It's called MAGA country," Trump told his supporters in Green Bay, Wisconsin. "You know, I didn't hear that term until that third-rate actor in Chicago went out and he said, 'I was beaten up by MAGA Country.' Can you believe that?"

Construction crane falls on vehicles in Seattle, killing two workers and two people


On Saturday, four people were killed in Seattle when a crane collapsed and fell from the roof of a building onto vehicles in the street. Two of the dead were crane operators and two were in cars smashed by the crane, Seattle Fire Chief Harold Scoggins said at a news conference. The victims included three males and one female, Fire Department spokesman Lance Garland said.

Sri Lanka cancels Sunday Masses until further notice following Easter Sunday bombings


The Archbishop of Colombo in Sri Lanka has announced that Sunday Masses have been cancelled until further notice following the Easter bombings in the country. Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith made the announcement during a news conference in the Sri Lankan capital on Friday over concerns about possible further attacks.
 He also appealed for financial support to rebuild the lives of the victims of the terror attack and to reconstruct the churches targeted. St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Negombo, north of Colombo, was one of the churches targeted.
 Over 250 people were killed in suicide bombings carried out by The Islamic State on Easter Sunday.
 Police have so far arrested 75 people with officials still searching for more suspects.

More than 60 dead, 1000 displaced in South African floods


More than 60 people have been killed in southern and eastern parts of South Africa after heavy rains caused flooding and mudslides. South Africa’s President, Cyril Ramaphosa visited the affected region today.
"This situation calls on all of us to pull together as a country to reach out to affected communities," he said in a statement.

She says she plans to visit schools over the next few weeks and make a decision by May. 
 Born to teen parents and surrounded by four siblings she helps raise. The International High School of New Orleans senior is in several honour societies and will be a first-generation college student.
 She has maintained a 3.5 grade point average while dual enrolled at a community college and has been described as a gifted painter. Her mother, Yolanda, says Love’s accomplishments have inspired them as parents to consider returning to school.

Indonesia election: More than 270 election staff die counting votes



More than 270 election workers in Indonesia have died, mostly of fatigue-related illnesses caused by long hours of work counting millions of ballot papers by hand, an official says. Arief Priyo Susanto, spokesman of the General Elections Commission (KPU), said 1,878 other staff had fallen ill. Some seven million people were helping count and monitor the 17 April vote.

Sri Lanka police chief resigns over 'failures' that led to deadly Easter bomb attacks


Sri Lanka's top police official, Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara, has resigned over failures that led to the deadly Easter bomb attacks, the country's president said on Friday.
 "The IGP has resigned. He has sent his resignation to the acting defence secretary. I'll nominate a new IGP soon," President Maithripala Sirisena told reporters.
 Sirisena's nominee has to be confirmed by a constitutional council. The resignation comes after the country's top defence ministry official, defence secretary Hemasiri Fernando resigned on Thursday.

The Islamic extremist, who is believed to have led the Sri Lanka bombings at various churches and hotels on Easter Sunday, died at the Shangri-La hotel, authorities have said. Zahran Hashim is believed to be one of two terrorists who carried out the deadly attack at the Shangri-La hotel in Colombo.

Woman arrested for forcing her 5-year-old daughter into prostitution


A 28-year-old woman has been arrested in Chachoengsao's Phanom Sarakham district, Thailand for allegedly selling her five-year-old daughter for sex in exchange for payments of Bt200 to Bt300 each time, provincial police deputy chief Pol Colonel Kriengkrai Boonson told the press on Monday.
The woman and the 52-year-old unnamed customer were arrested and the girl rescued on Sunday evening in an isolated location in Tambon Nong Yao.

Almost 220 victims of human trafficking have been rescued by police in Benin and Nigeria in an operation coordinated by INTERPOL, the organization said on Wednesday. A number of victims were also rescued from premises where they were forced into prostitution.
With a number of investigations ongoing, police arrested 47 people and seized vehicles, cash, mobile phones and computers.

Tesla's Elon Musk expects 'robotaxis' to start in US next year

17 killed in Uganda after heavy rain, flooding


At least 17 people - mostly children - have died after heavy rains in eastern Uganda caused flooding.
The rains hit the districts of Kamuli and Buyende during the night, with some people drowning in the flood waters and others hit by collapsing walls, the region's police spokesperson Michael Kasadha said.
"Many of the children could not quickly run away from the floods and it's probably the reason why they died in large numbers," he said.
More than 50 injured people have been taken to hospital, and police say they expect to retrieve more bodies.

18-year-old student sues Apple for $1 Billion after facial recognition allegedly led to his false arrest


An 18-year-old student from New York is suing Apple after being falsely identified and arrested for robbery using the company's facial recognition software. The student, Ousmane Bah filed $1 billion lawsuit against the company on Monday, April 22.
In the lawsuit, the teenager claims that the software incorrectly identified him as the robber in multiple thefts in Apple Stores across several states, according to a report from The Verge.
A photo was reportedly a part of the warrant that was used to arrest Bah who vehemently denied that it was him in the image.

First pictures of wealthy brothers who blew themselves up along with innocent people having breakfast at Sri Lanka's five star hotels


Two of the suicide bombers who killed scores on Easter Sunday at hotels in Sri Lanka were well-educated brothers from a wealthy family and photos of these brothers have now emerged. Wealthy brothers Inshaf Ibrahim (left) and Ilham Ibrahim (right) were the sons of a millionaire spice trader and were privately educated in Colombo.
 On Sunday, April 21, both brothers calmly walked into the luxury Shangri-La and Cinnamon Grand hotels and detonated their vests as guests were eating breakfast. Their attacks led to the death of at least 41 foreigners.
Hours later, as police raided their £1 million mansion in an exclusive neighbourhood of Colombo, Ilham's pregnant wife Fatima blew herself up, killing her three children and three officers.

Thieves have stolen 35 rare saxophones from an well-known Italian collection but missed the crown jewel: one which belonged to jazz great Sonny Rollins. Attilio Berni told AFP Tuesday that his collection of 600 saxophones, which has been exhibited at the Louvre museum in Paris, had been built up over 25 years. They did not touch the Sonny Rollins saxophone... which suggests that they did not really know what they were doing," he said.

Toll in Sri Lanka bombings rises to 359: police


The toll in a series of suicide bomb blasts on Easter Sunday targeting hotels and churches in Sri Lanka has risen to 359, police said Wednesday. The additional deaths were the result of the wounded dying of their injuries. At least 500 people were injured in the attacks.
The blasts have been claimed by the Islamic State group, with Sri Lanka's government pointing the finger at the little-known local Islamist group National Thowheeth Jama'ath, but saying the group likely had "international" help.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk crowned PFA Players’ Player of the Year


Liverpool defender, Virgil van Dijk has beaten Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling to become the PFA Players’ Player of the Year for 2019. The official announcement is due on Thursday but the Liverpool centre-half has won the backing of his fellow professionals for his outstanding contribution in the best defence in the Premier League this season, according to Daily Mail.
Victory for the Dutch defender means the prize remains with Liverpool, following Mohamed Salah’s triumph last season.
The 2019 PFA Awards will be held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Sunday, April 28.
The Holland international joined Liverpool in January 2018 in a £75million transfer from Southampton has made 44 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool so far this season.

A Dutch doctor at the centre of an IVF scandal fathered at least 49 children, DNA tests have shown. Jan Karbaat, who died in 2017, used his own sperm instead of sperm from a chosen donor as his clinic in Rotterdam. Defence for Children, an organisation representing parents and children born through his now-closed clinic, said DNA tests conducted yesterday confirmed 49 children in the case are direct descendants of Karbaat.

Grandfather threw his grandson, 2, into hot oven because he "saw the devil in the boy"


A two-year-old boy is in a coma after his grandfather, 53, threw him into a scalding oven because he "saw the devil in the boy". The toddler from Omsk, in Russia, was rescued from the oven but is in a "grave" condition after suffering acute burns over 50 per cent of his body. The child is fighting for his life in a coma and on a breathing machine, doctors said.

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association following his late dismissal in Monday’s 2-2 draw with Burnley.  The 60-year-old Italian has until Friday to answer to the charge. Sarri’s assistant Gianfranco Zola claimed after the match that the decision to send his compatriot to the stands was unfair as he “was just trying to tell our players to get in position”

Rapper, Offset charged with felony gun possession by prosecutors after summer arrest in Georgia


Migos rapper, Offset, has been charged with felony gun possession after he was arrested for allegedly carrying three firearms while on probation last summer. According to TMZ, the Clayton County D.A.'s Office confirmed that prosecutors filed three charges against the Migos rapper in February, including the felony charge for firearms possession by a convicted felon, and misdemeanor charges for marijuana possession and an improper lane change.
