Paul Scholes: Ex-Man Utd midfielder fined £8,000 for breaking betting rules


Former England and Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has been fined £8,000 after admitting breaking Football Association betting rules.
Scholes was charged after it was alleged that he placed 140 bets on football matches between 17 August 2015 and 12 January 2019.
The FA also warned him as to his future conduct.
"I would like to apologise and I understand and fully accept the fine imposed by the FA," said Scholes.

Chicago Police Department have revealed Jussie Smollett obsessively Google searched himself more than 50 times to read reports on his alleged attack in January 2019.  This comes days after a Judge in Illinois appointed a special prosecutor to re-investigate the Jussie Smollett case.
Among the massive flies of information including video, computer search records and text message transcripts collected by police, his computer search history shows that the Empire actor googled 'Jussie Smollett' and 'Juss' 57 times from January 30 to February 10.

Regina Hall hosted the 19th annual BET Awards ceremony, which aired live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.  Cardi B scored seven nominations, including nods for best female hip hop artist, best collaboration, video of the year, album of the year and the viewers' choice award. She was among the winners on Sunday night, taking home album of the year for 'Invasion of Privacy', and best female hip-hop artist. She also performed as the opening act.

Boris Johnson under pressure to explain police incident


Boris Johnson, the front-runner in the race to become Britain's next prime minister, was facing mounting calls Sunday to fully explain an incident in which police attended an alleged altercation at the London home he shares with his girlfriend.
Johnson ducked repeated questions during a leadership hustings in Birmingham the day before. Questioned by journalist and CNN Talk host Iain Dale, he said: "I don't think they want hear about that kind of thing," prompting applause from party members. "I think what they want to hear is what my plans are for the country and the party."

Fans of Sylvester Stallone are feeling disappointed after discovering that the actor's upcoming 'An Experience With event' in London will see them pay £849 for a photo with the star. Babe Ruth jersey fetches record-breaking $5.64m at auction


A jersey worn by legendary baseball player Babe Ruth has become the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia ever sold. The garment was snapped up for $5.64m (£4.4m) at auction in New York on Saturday. It broke the previous record of $4.4m which was set in 2012 - also for one of Ruth's New York Yankees jerseys.
The shirt dates from the 1928-1930 period of Ruth's long career, in which he became an early sporting superstar.

Storm Miguel kills three after overturning rescue ship off French coast


A rescue boat has overturned in the Atlantic off the west coast of France leaving three crew dead, amid winds of up to 129 km/h (80 mph). They were part of a crew of seven who had gone to the aid of another boat which had got into difficulty as Storm Miguel struck the area.
Winds of up to 147km/h hit northern Spain earlier, swirling around the Bay of Biscay and moving on to France. The storm is unusual, coming at the start of the summer tourist season.
Photographs of the National Society of Sea Rescue rescue boat captured it rolling in large swells in the moments before it capsized, after which the vessel ran ashore upside down.

Sleeping woman narrates horror of waking up in plane and discovering she was the only one left in there


A woman has said she was left alone on an Air Canada plane after falling asleep during a flight. Tiffani Adams said she fell asleep while flying from Quebec to Toronto on 9 June. When she woke up, she was freezing cold and still buckled into her seat, but the aircraft was parked. She said she had experienced "reoccurring night terrors" since the incident took place. Air Canada has confirmed the incident occurred and is investigating.

Malawi parliament elects first-ever female speaker


Lawmakers in Malawi on Wednesday elected a female member of parliament as speaker for the first time in history of the Southeast African nation. Catherine Gotani Hara from the opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) amassed 97 votes against 93 of Esther Mcheka Chilenje of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
The 193-seat parliament was dissolved in March this year ahead of fresh elections on May 21.
“The victory of Hara as first-ever female speaker of parliament is what every Malawian hoped for. Her election should encourage women that if you invest in girls, they can also become leaders,” Eisenhower Mkaka, MCP lawmaker and party spokesperson, told a local station Zodiak after announcement of the voting results.

Vatican cancels football match with Vienna over anti-abortion protests


The Vatican canceled a friendly football match between its new women's team and a club in Vienna, after a number of Austrian players protested against the Catholic Church's stance on abortion.  The match, which was scheduled to take place Saturday at the Mariahilf football club in the Austrian capital, was called off after several Austrians lifted up their shirts to reveal pro-choice messages painted on their stomachs and backs while the countries' anthems were playing before kick-off.
One player wrote the slogan "my body my rules" on her back, according to images circulating on social media.

Cosby appeals sexual assault conviction


Comedian Bill Cosby, who is serving a three and a half year jail sentence, on Tuesday appealed a Pennsylvania court’s verdict that found him guilty of drugging and sexually assaulting a woman 15 years ago.
“This filing is an important step in ensuring that Mr Cosby receives a hearing from a fair and impartial court,” the actor’s spokesman, Andrew Wyatt, said.
“The Constitution guarantees that right to Mr Cosby — and to all Americans — and he looks forward to securing justice in the court of appeal,” he said in a statement.

Huawei exec asks Canada to quash US extradition request


Lawyers for a senior executive at Chinese tech giant Huawei asked Canada’s justice minister on Monday to quash extradition proceedings against Meng Wanzhou and for her to be released.
The court proceedings are scheduled to start on January 20. Meng is currently out on bail.
The United States wants to put Meng on trial for fraud for allegedly violating Iran sanctions and lying about it to US banks — accusations that her lawyers dispute.
A copy of the letter to Justice Minister David Lametti was not made public.

Passenger jet abandons take-off after foetus is found blocking toilet of FlySafair flight in South Africa


A South African airliner abandoned take-off this morning after an "abandoned foetus" was discovered blocking the aircraft's toilet. Flight FA 411 by Fly Safair from Johannesburg to Durban was scheduled to take off King Shaka International Airport this morning at 6.15am.
But on final preparations for take-off one of the airline's cleaning staff discovered the foetus blocking the toilet of the aircraft.

Researchers at the University of Washington are developing new AI technology that could be used on smartphones and smart speakers to detect whether someone is having a heart attack by listening out for unique sounds, Press Association reported on Wednesday.
People suffering from a cardiac arrest initially struggle with irregular gasps of breath, which is known as agonal breathing, Press Association wrote.

Pakistan to open more than 1,000 new courts to fight violence against women


Pakistan will set up more than 1,000 courts dedicated to tackling violence against women in the country, a senior judge has announced.  Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa detailed plans for special courts in every district in Pakistan to deal specifically with cases of violence against women in the country. The judge said that these new courts would have a "different atmosphere" where victims could speak out "without fear," news agency Reuters reported.

A teenage boy attended his end-of-school party dressed as a girl and he was crowned Prom Queen.  Xavier Parkins, 15, took six hours to get ready, doing his own make-up, and putting on his short pink strapless dress that he designed with the help of a dressmaker. He wore matching heels and did his own hair and nails for the outing at Pride Park stadium in Derby.

More than 40 die in India gorge plunge


At least 44 people have been killed in India after a bus plunged into a gorge, officials say.
Dozens more were injured in the accident on Thursday in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, a mountainous northern state. At least 60 people were on board when the packed bus veered off the road. Some passengers had been on the vehicle's roof.

Mother arrested for killing her 3-year-old son with SUV while playing game of "chicken"


A mother has been charged with Criminally Negligent Homicide for running over her 3-year-old son while playing a game of "chicken" with her kids.  According to a news release from Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg, Lexus Stagg, 26, was seen in surveillance footage from her Harris County, Texas, apartment driving toward her three children as they ran toward the front of her 2006 Lincoln Navigator.

One killed, several wounded in airport drone attack in Saudi Arabia


Yemen's Houthi rebels have launched an attack on Abha civilian airport in southern Saudi Arabia that killed one person and wounded seven others, the Saudi-led coalition battling the group in Yemen has said. According to the Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV, the movement targeted Abha and Jizan airports in southern Saudi Arabia with drone attacks on Sunday.
"A terrorist attack by the Iranian-backed Houthi militia took place at Abha international airport ... A Syrian national died and seven civilians were wounded," the coalition said in a statement issued by the state-run Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Kansas to allow transgender people to change their gender on their birth certificate


Kansas will begin allowing transgender residents to change their birth certificates so that the documents reflect their gender identities under a legal settlement ending a federal lawsuit.  LGBTQ-right advocates said Monday that Kansas now will have a policy on birth certificates in line with most other states’ policies, Fox 4 News reports.  This makes Kansas the 48th state in America to allow transgender people to change the sex designations on their birth certificates.

Ethiopia army chief shot dead in 'coup bid' attacks


The chief of staff of the Ethiopian army, Gen Seare Mekonnen, has been shot dead by his own bodyguard in the capital, Addis Ababa. He and another officer died trying to prevent a coup attempt against the administration in Ethiopia's northern Amhara region, PM Abiy Ahmed said.
In Amhara itself, regional governor Ambachew Mekonnen was killed along with an adviser. The government says the situation is under control after arrests were made.
The prime minister has gone on TV to urge Ethiopians to unite in the face of "evil" forces set on dividing the country.

Mexican rescue dog credited with saving 12 lives and locating over 40 bodies has retired after nine years of service


A rescue dog who gained international fame for her heroics after an earthquake hit Mexico in 2017 has retired after nine years of service.   The Mexican Navy canine unit held a ceremony on Monday to honour Golden Labrador Frida who has taken part in 53 rescue operations across Mexico, Haiti, Guatemala and Ecuador.

82-year-old man compensated with $288,000 after 46 years for being wrongfully convicted for murder


82-year-old Vietnamese man Tran Van Them was charged, convicted and sentenced to death in 1973 and 1974. He was only declared innocent in 2017.  Them, a resident of Yen Phong District in Bac Ninh Province, one hour northeast of Hanoi, got the compensation for the years he spent in jail
 He and his family originally demanded VND15 billion in compensation for his ordeal, which included being sentenced to death twice. After prolonged negotiations, they agreed to accept less than half their demand, because "we have been waiting for too long" and Them "is already too old and his health has been declining progressively," the family said.

California man arrested for shooting a 10-month-old in the head because her mother rejected him at a party


A 10-month old girl is in critical condition after being shot in the head by a 23-year-old man because the child's mother rejected him at a party. According to the LA Times, 23-year-old Marcos Antonio Echartea was arrested Sunday in Fresno, California on suspicion of three counts of attempted murder after police say he shot into a car where baby Fayth, her mother, and a male friend were sitting.

Lewis Hamilton extended his championship lead and continued his relentless run of success on Sunday when he scorched to an emphatic victory ahead of Mercedes team mate Valtteri Bottas at the French Grand Prix on Sunday.

Former Atletico, Liverpool striker Torres announces retirement


Fernando Torres, the former Atletico Madrid, Liverpool and Chelsea forward who won the World Cup with Spain, announced Friday he was retiring.
"I have something very important to announce. After 18 exciting years, the time has come to put an end to my football career," Torres, 35, said on Twitter.
Torres currently plays for Japanese side Sagan Tosu.

Drought forces Namibia to auction 1,000 wild animals


Drought-hit Namibia has authorised the sale of at least 1,000 wild animals — including elephants and giraffes — to limit loss of life and generate $1.1 million for conservation, the authorities confirmed Saturday.
“Given that this year is a drought year, the [environment] ministry would like to sell various type of game species from various protected areas to protect grazing and at the same time to also generate much needed funding for parks and wildlife management,” environment ministry spokesman Romeo Muyunda told AFP.

Ethiopian Airlines rejects ‘pilot error’ claim in US


A US politician who blamed pilot error for contributing to the deadly crash of a Boeing 737 Max flown by Ethiopian Airlines was “seriously misinformed”, the carrier’s boss has said. Republican Sam Graves told a House of Representatives hearing last month that “facts” in investigations after crashes in both Ethiopia and Indonesia “reveal pilot error as a factor in these tragically fatal accidents”.

German Bishop Rudolf Voderholzer has come out strongly against the admission of women to the Catholic priesthood amid ongoing criticism from women within the German Church.
“Jesus consciously only called men to be apostles, as the progenitors of the new Israel, who then had to realize him in the Christian cult,” he said in Ingolstadt at a church service opening a conference of the Conservative Forum of German Catholics.

Neymar's Champions League ban upheld


Paris Saint-Germain's attempt to overturn Neymar's Champions League ban has failed after UEFA upheld the Brazilian star's three-match suspension.
"The appeal lodged by Paris Saint-Germain is rejected. Consequently, the UEFA Control, Ethics, and Disciplinary Body’s decision of 25 April is confirmed," UEFA announced in a statement.
"The CEDB had decided to suspend the Paris Saint-Germain player Neymar Junior for three UEFA competition matches for which he would be otherwise eligible for insulting match officials."

Jamal Khashoggi: 'Credible evidence' linking Saudi prince to journalist's murder


There is 'credible evidence' linking Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to the killing of Jamal Khashoggi, a UN expert has said. A report by special rapporteur Agnes Callamard says the evidence warrants further investigation by an independent and impartial international inquiry.
Journalist Khashoggi was killed inside the Saudi embassy in Istanbul by Saudi agents on October 2. He had been at the Saudi consulate to receive papers ahead of his wedding.

UAE announces free visa for U-18 visitors


The United Arab Emirates announced today that no tourist visa fees will be charged for children below 18 years who are accompanying their parents to the UAE.
The announcement was made Wednesday evening by UAE’s Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, Gulf News reported.
However, the visa fee waiver will only be enjoyed by the U-18s entering the emirates between July 15 and September 15 each year.

500 vultures found dead after consuming poisoned elephants



No fewer than 500 vultures had been killed in Botswana’s central district after consuming three elephants laced with poisonous chemical. Authorities at the country’s Department of Wildlife and National Parks said on Friday that a total of 537 vultures and two tawny eagles were found dead at the site.“The breakdown included 10 cape vultures, 14 lappet faced vultures, 468 white backed vultures, 17 white headed vultures and 28 hooded vulture,’’ said a statement issued by the department.

British wrestling legend, Adrian McCallum is dead


British wrestling legend Adrian McCallum, known by his ring name of Lionheart, has passed away aged 36. The reigning ICW world heavyweight champion was a mainstay on the British wrestling scene for more than 10 years and appeared on house shows for WWE and TNA in the UK.
He also appeared on the revamped World of Sport Wrestling and was one of British wrestling's best known figures.
ICW (Insane Championship Wrestling) posted a heartfelt message on Twitter confirming the shock news, leading to tributes pouring in from across the wrestling community.

Sarri who managed Napoli for three years before leaving for Chelsea addressed his Neapolitan background.

Jussie Smollett could be prosecuted 'again' for 'staging hoax attack' as judge orders special prosecutor to examine the case

Police arrest pilot who was supposed to fly Emiliano Sala, but asked a friend to fly him instead


A British pilot has been arrested over the deaths of Argentinian footballer Emiliano Sala and the friend he drafted in at the 11th hour to fly the plane that plunged into the English Channel. Dorset Police have held David Henderson, 64, from York, on suspicion of manslaughter by an unlawful act following the doomed flight from Nantes to Cardiff on January 21 this year.

Trump launches 2020 bid with vow to ‘keep America great’


President Donald Trump launched his 2020 reelection campaign Tuesday much the same way he rode to power in 2016 -- with a raucous, nationalist rally stirring fear of illegal immigration and vowing to fight for blue collar workers.
Lashing out at his Democratic opponents as radical leftists fueled by "hatred" and out to "rip your country apart," Trump promised an "earthquake at the ballot box" next year.

Harvey Weinstein's defense attorney doesn't want to represent him anymore, files to withdraw from his 'rape' case


According to reports, attorney Jose Baez filed papers asking the court to let him withdraw from Weinstein's sexual assault case. The move comes after the fallen movie mogul hired a different attorney to communicate with Baez.
 "First, Mr. Weinstein has engaged in behavior that makes this representation unreasonably difficult to carry out effectively and has insisted upon taking actions with which I have fundamental disagreements. Mr. Weinstein has deliberately disregarded our fee agreement and has had outside counsel indicate that he intends to continue to do so," Baez noted in the filing.
