Qatar 2022: Morocco secure first world cup victory in 24-years with shocking 2-0 win over Belgium

 

 The Atlas Lions of Morocco stunned Belgium on Sunday afternoon, November 27 with two second-half goals to pick their first victory in the FIFA world cup in 24 years.
It was Morocco's first win in Qatar 2022 and their second clean sheet in the competition.
Belgium were the overwhelming favourite for victory over Morocco, based on their past records in World Cup group-stage matches.
However, that wasn’t the case in Sunday’s tie as Belgium players were subdued by two second-half goals from substitute players, Abdelhamid Sabiri and Zakaria Abdoukhal.

Qatar makes history as earliest host country to get eliminated in the World Cup

 


 Qatar became the first World Cup host country to get eliminated after its first two games following a loss to Senegal on Friday November 25.
 The tournament hosts slipped to a second successive defeat in Group A on Friday, losing 3-1 to Senegal. That loss came after they were beaten by Ecuador 2-0 in their group opener on Sunday and leaves them with no chance of qualifying for the knockout phase after Ecuador and the Netherlands played out a 1-1 draw.
 Qatar still have one final game against the Netherlands on Tuesday, and even if they managed to pull off a shock win, they can only finish on a total of three points, which is not enough to catch their group rivals.
 South Africa is the only other host nation to be knocked out in the group stage of the World Cup, but they were only knocked out in the final game of the group stage in 2010.

 Iranian players refused to sing their national anthem before their World Cup match against England in an apparent expression of support for anti-government protests in their home country.
There has been a fierce crackdown on protests in Iran sparked by the death in custody of Mahsa Amini in September.
22-year-old Amini was detained by morality police for allegedly breaking the strict rules around head coverings. Human rights activists have said more than 400 protesters have been killed and 16,800 others arrested in a crackdown by Iran's security forces.

Malawi's vice-president arrested for alleged corruption

 

 Malawi's Vice-President Saulos Chilima has been arrested by the country's anti-corruption agency on allegation of accepting money in exchange for awarding government contracts.
 He is accused of receiving $280,000 (£230,000) from a British businessman “and other items”.
The British businessman, Zuneth Sattar, is under arrest in the UK where he is accused of using connections with senior Malawi government officials and politicians to fraudulently obtain contracts to supply goods and services. Mr Sattar has denied all wrong doing.
 The Financial Times reported that the contracts covered water cannons, food rations, and armoured personnel carriers.

 Squid Game actor, Oh Yeong-su, who recently received a Golden Globe for his role in the popular Netflix miniseries, has reportedly been accused of sexual misconduct.
 The Korean actor was reportedly released without being detained.
 According to a report by Variety, prosecutors in Suwon, a city close to Seoul, disclosed that Oh had been charged the day before.
 In mid-2017, the 78-year-old Oh was accused of inappropriately touching a woman's body.
 In December of last year, Oh received a complaint from the alleged victim.

Three men found guilty of murdering 298 people in 2014 shooting down of Malaysia airlines flight in Ukraine, sentenced to life imprisonment

 


A Dutch court has found three men guilty of the murder of 298 people onboard flight MH17, which was shot down by a Russian surface-to-air missile when it was flying over eastern Ukraine in 2014.
The court handed down sentences of life imprisonment to Russian nationals Igor Girkin and Sergey Dubinskiy and a Ukrainian, Leonid Kharchenko, after finding them guilty of bringing down the plane and the murder of everyone onboard. They were ordered to pay “more than €16m” in compensation to the victims.
 The three men responsible remain at large and it remains unclear if they will ever serve their sentences.
A third Russian national, Oleg Pulatov, was acquitted of the charges owing to lack of evidence about his role in the firing of the missile.

 Before the shooting, he threw away the "kill list" of co-workers with one of his victim’s names circled with a pen, it emerged Thursday, Nov. 24.
The list was found in a trash can outside Bing’s Virginia home.
The printed list showed the names of workers at the Chesapeake store, their shift hours, departments they worked in and duties.

 A 22-year-old gunman entered an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado, just before midnight Saturday and immediately opened fire, killing at least five people and injuring 25 others, before patrons confronted and stopped him, police said Sunday.
The suspect in the shooting at Club Q was identified as Anderson Lee Aldrich, according to Colorado Springs Police Chief Adrian Vasquez. He used a long rifle in the shooting, and two firearms were found at the scene, Vasquez said.

Adidas launches probe into misconduct allegations against Kanye West

 

 Adidas says it has launched an investigation into allegations of inappropriate behavior by Kanye West, after the German sports wear maker last month ended its partnership with the rapper and fashion designer.
 Adidas said it initiated the probe after receiving an anonymous letter making several allegations against the musician, now legally known as Ye.
The investigation follows a report this week by Rolling Stone magazine that detailed alleged incidents of inappropriate behavior by Ye toward staff and prospective employees. Rolling Stone cited interviews with more than two dozen former Yeezy and Adidas staff.

Ronaldo, 37, has agreed a mutual termination of his contract following his explosive interview with Piers Morgan in which he criticised United and manager Erik ten Hag.

Magnitude-5.6 earthquake leaves over 200 dead in Indonesia

 

 Rescuers were digging through debris on Tuesday to find survivors of a powerful earthquake that toppled homes and buildings in a highly populated area of Indonesia’s West Java province, killing at least 268 people.
A further 151 people remain missing and more than 1,000 were injured, the country’s National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) said.
The 5.6-magnitude quake hit the Cianjur region in West Java about 1:21 p.m. local time on Monday at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), causing buildings to collapse while school classes were underway.

 New Zealand’s highest court has ruled that the country’s current voting age of 18 was discriminatory, forcing parliament to discuss whether it should be lowered.
 The case was taken to court by advocacy group Make It 16, which wants the age lowered to include 16 and 17 year olds. The legal tussle has been ongoing since 2020.
On Monday, November 21, the Supreme Court found that the current voting age of 18 was inconsistent with the country’s Bill of Rights, which gives people a right to be free from age discrimination when they have reached 16.

Afghan women were stopped from entering amusement parks in Kabul Wednesday after the Taliban’s morality ministry said that there would be restrictions on women being able to access public parks.
A spokesperson for the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (MPVPV) confirmed that women would be restricted from accessing parks when asked for comment by Reuters, but did not respond to requests to provide further details.
It was not clear how widely the restrictions applied or how they affected a previous rule from the MPVPV saying parks must be segregated by gender and certain days would be aside for women.
Bilal Karimi, a deputy spokesperson for the Taliban administration, did not respond to request for comment.

$450,000 worth of cocaine seized from wheelchair wheels at JFK airport, customs officials say

 

 A traveler at New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport was arrested after $450,000 worth of cocaine was discovered hidden in the wheels of her wheelchair.
The traveler arrived in New York City from the Dominican Republic on November 10, according to a news release from US Customs and Border Protection. Officers noticed the wheels on her wheelchair were not turning and X-rayed the wheelchair.

South African court orders former President Jacob Zuma back to jail after ruling medical parole was unlawful

 


 South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal ruled on ruled on Monday November 21, that the decision to release former President Jacob Zuma on early medical parole was “unlawful” and that he should return to prison to finish his sentence for contempt of court.
 Last year, Zuma was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment after ignoring a court order to testify at a government inquiry into widespread corruption during his near-decade as president, a tenure that ended in 2018 when incumbent Cyril Ramaphosa replaced him.
In September 2021, Zuma was released on medical parole after serving a fraction of the sentence. But in December, the high court set aside the parole decision and ordered him to return to jail.

Man dancing on top of a moving truck dies after hitting overpass

 

 A 25-year-old man who was dancing on top of a trailer slammed into an overpass and died.
 The unidentified man was knocked off an 18-wheeler on Eastex Freeway in Houston, Texas, around 11.30am on November 10.
Footage recorded by a driver shows the man standing on a white truck and dodging one overpass. He then gets up and moves his hips and arms and appears to be looking to the right when a second overpass hits him, shows the video obtained by the Daily Mail. It happened as the truck moved under the Tuan Street Bridge, according to the Houston Police Department. The man was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

 A flock of sheep in China's inner Mongolia region have gone viral for walking non-stop in a circle for nearly two weeks.
 Surveillance footage reveals the flock, which live in pen number 13, have been walking in a clockwise motion for almost two weeks.
Video of the sheep circle has gone viral, with the creepy footage being seen by some as the "sign of the apocalypse".
 The owner claims the odd behaviour began with a few of the farm animals before the entire flock joined in.
There are 34 sheep pens at Ms. Miao's farm, but only the sheep in pen number 13 have been acting strangely.

Google to Pay a record $391M fine for misleading users about the collection of location data

 


Google has agreed to pay $391.5 million to settle with 40 US states for misleading users about the collection of personal location data, making it the largest attorney general-led consumer privacy settlement ever, according to the US Department of Justice.
 Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum, who led the settlement along with Nebraska AG Doug Peterson, pointed out on Tuesday, November 15, that for years Google has prioritized profit over their users’ privacy.

Georgia’s six-week abortion ban ruled unconstitutional and overturned

 

 
A Fulton County Judge has struck down parts of Georgia’s restrictive ban on all abortions after six weeks, calling the law unconstitutional.
 The law, called the "Living Infants Fairness and Equality Act" or "LIFE Act," was passed in April 2019. It bans all abortions after fetal cardiac activity can be detected, which usually occurs after 6 weeks.
Critics of the "fetal heartbeat bill" point out that many women do not even know they are pregnant until after six weeks.

Elizabeth Holmes sentenced to more than 11 years in prison for fraud

 


Elizabeth Holmes was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison on Friday following her conviction in January for defrauding investors while running the failed blood testing startup Theranos.
Judge Edward Davila imposed a sentence of 11 years and three months in prison, with another three years of supervision after Holmes is released. The sentence also includes a fine of $400, or $100 for each count of fraud. Restitution will be set at a later date. Holmes was ordered to turn herself into custody on April 27, 2023. She is expected to appeal her conviction.
Holmes, who was found guilty in January on four charges of defrauding investors, faced up to 20 years in prison as well as a fine of $250,000 plus restitution for each count.

Over the past 50 years, human sperm counts appear to have fallen by more than 50% around the globe, according to an updated review of medical literature.
If the findings are confirmed and the decline continues, it could have important implications for human reproduction. Researchers say it would also be a harbinger of declining health in men in general, since semen quality can be an important marker of overall health.
The review, and its conclusions, have sparked a debate among experts in male fertility. Some say the findings are real and urgent, but others say they are not convinced by the data because the methods of counting sperm have changed so much over time that it’s not possible to compare historical and modern numbers.

The Swiss-Italian was elected president of world football's governing body in 2016 but his tenure is now in line to be extended after he stood unopposed in the leadership race and was backed by 200 out of 209 member associations.
It is understood 52 European nations supported Infantino extending his term in charge, interesting because of tensions between himself and UEFA president Aleksandr Ceferin.
 Infantino new term at the FIFA helm is expected to be ratified at the 73rd FIFA Congress in Kigali, Rwanda, on March 16, 2023.

FIFA confirms no alcohol to be sold at Qatar World Cup stadiums

 

 Just two days before the World Cup kicks off in Qatar, soccer’s world governing body FIFA confirmed that no alcohol will be sold at the eight stadiums which will host the tournament’s 64 matches.
“Following discussions between host country authorities and FIFA, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the FIFA Fan Festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues, removing sales points of beer from Qatar’s FIFA World Cup 2022 stadium perimeter,” said the FIFA statement.
The Muslim country is considered to be very conservative and tightly regulates alcohol sales and usage.
In September, Qatar had said it would permit ticketed fans to buy alcoholic beer at World Cup soccer matches starting three hours before kickoff and for one hour after the final whistle, but not during the match.

 Kenya police have arrested a 28-year-old woman identified as Winnie Anyango over the murder of her 55-year-old husband, Becca Mwamburi, in Likoni, Mombasa.
 Becca's corpse was found at his house on Monday, November 14, 2022. A police report revealed that he died under mysterious circumstances after a quarrel with his wife, Winnie Anyango, on Saturday, November 12.
The woman claimed that the man fell and hit a stone on the floor after a disagreement at around 8:00 pm.

2-year-old boy starved to death after his father suffered a fatal heart attack at their New York City apartment

 

 A coroner's report has revealed that a 2-year-old boy who was found dead at a New York City apartment alongside his father, died of starvation.
 David Conde, Sr., who died in February, suffered from "cardiovascular disease", the Ontario County Sheriff's Office announced earlier this week, per NBC News. David Conde, Jr. subsequently died of starvation, police added. His death was ruled an accident.

Sadio Mane has been ruled out of the 2022 World Cup due to a leg injury, Senegal have confirmed.
 The Bayern Munich forward emerged as a doubt for the early stages of the tournament after he injured his right fibula, but was selected in the hope he would be fit to play after the "first games”.
On Thursday evening November 17, the Senegal team doctor, Manuel Afonso, announced he would not be able to recover from the injury in time, and will therefore withdraw from the squad.

Trump cast aside criticism over the deadly Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol and recent Republican party anger about the GOP’s struggles in the midterm elections.

 The world's richest man, Elon Musk has said he would reduce his time at Twitter and eventually find a new CEO to run the social media company, adding that he hoped to complete an organizational restructuring this week.
Musk made the remarks while testifying in a Delaware court on Wednesday, November 16 to defend against claims that his $56 billion pay package at Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) was based on easy to achieve performance targets and was approved by a compliant board of directors.
Tesla investors have been increasingly concerned about the time that Musk is devoting to turning around Twitter and on Wednesday, shares of the company fell 3%.

Texas parents charged after 7-year-old son was found dead in washing machine

 

 The adoptive parents of a Texas boy whose body was found inside a washing machine have been arrested in connection to his death, authorities said.
 Jemaine Thomas, 42, was charged with capital murder in connection to the July death of his son, Troy Khoeler, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced Tuesday night, Nov. 15.
Thomas’ wife, Tiffany, 35, was charged with injury to a child by omission. The couple first reported Troy, 7, missing from their Spring home in the early hours of July 28.
 A search of the residence later that morning led to the discovery of the child’s body in a top-loading washing machine in the garage.

TV preacher sentenced to 8,658 years imprisonment in Turkey

 

 An Istanbul court, on Wednesday, Nov. 16, sentenced a popular Muslim televangelist to 8,658 years in prison in a retrial, local media reported.
 Adnan Oktar surrounded himself with scantily clad women he called "kittens".
These women, who used to surround him during his TV show, wore lots of makeup and little clothes as he preached creationism and conservative values. In 2021, the 66-year-old was sentenced to 1,075 years for crimes including sexual assault, sexual abuse of minors, fraud and attempted political and military espionage.
 But that ruling was overturned by an upper court.

Ex-Aston Villa striker John Carew is jailed for 14 months for tax evasion

 

 Former Aston Villa footballer, John Carew has been jailed for 14 months for tax evasion crimes, after unintentionally failing to disclose his income at the Oslo District Court.
 Carew, 43, was also hit with a hefty fine of £45,353 (540,000 NOK) for tax fraud totaling £456,264 (5.4million NOK) back in his home country of Norway.
Should Carew have acted intentionally in committing tax fraud between 2017 and 2019, prosecutors reportedly believed an appropriate punishment for Carew would have been a prison sentence of around two years and seven months, while his defendants wanted a community punishment.

Man Utd take down mural featuring Cristiano Ronaldo outside Old Trafford

 

 Manchester United have decided to remove a mural that features Cristiano Ronaldo on the day of his explosive, tell-all interview with Piers Morgan.
The Red Devils' forward has endured a torrid time of it this season and in turn has vented his fury on Piers Morgan Uncensored, taking aim at everyone from manager Erik ten Hag to former team-mate Wayne Rooney. It is most likely the comments Ronaldo made about the boss that has made it very likely he has played his last game in a United shirt.
Some may think it is also the reason why United officials would deem it no longer appropriate to have his face on the side of Old Trafford and remove it, but that is not actually the case. Cranes were spotted taking down the mural on Wednesday afternoon, just hours before his bombshell discussion with Morgan goes to air.

Six people confirmed dead after two historic planes collide midair at Dallas air show

 

 Six people were killed when two World War II-era planes collided in midair Saturday afternoon in a deadly crash at the Wings Over Dallas Airshow at the Dallas Executive Airport. Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins confirmed the deaths in a tweet Sunday morning. “According to our Dallas County Medical Examiner, there are a total of 6 fatalities from yesterday’s Wings over Dallas air show incident,” Jenkins tweeted. “Authorities will continue working today on the investigation & identification of the deceased. Please pray for their families and all involved.” The planes involved were a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and a Bell P-63 Kingcobra, according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA said the two planes collided and crashed to the ground around 1:20 p.m. Officials said the B-17 had a crew of five people, while the Kingcobra was flown by a single pilot. No paying customers were on board.

UFC 281: Israel Adesanya defeated by Alex Pereira, loses UFC middleweight title

 

 Israel Adesanya’s unbeaten streak in the UFC’s middleweight division has been ended at 12 by the hands of Alex Pereira.
In a bout that had captured the imagination of fight fans around the world, Adesanya suffered a fifth-round TKO loss at UFC 281 in Madison Square Garden on Sunday to relinquish the UFC middleweight championship to his Brazilian counterpart.
It was just the second time in Adesanya’s career that he had suffered a knockout loss – the other being in a kickboxing bout against Pereira in 2017.
It had been a strong performance from Adesanya throughout the contest. What was expected to be a high-level striking bout proved to be just that, however Adesanya mixed in his grappling well to test the relatively inexperienced Pereira in all areas.

Michael Jackson's estate seeks return of $1 million in property allegedly taken from singer's home

 

 Michael Jackson's estate has filed legal documents to recover $1 million in property that was allegedly stolen from the singer's home after he died in 2009.
 According to TMZ, the estate of the late pop superstar claimed the property is being wrongfully possessed by Jeffre Phillips.
Phillips, 55, was previously engaged to Michael's sister La Toya Jackson, 66.
 The estate has alleged in court papers that Phillips used the sadness and chaos around the singer's 2009 death to take private and personal property from Jackson's home on Carolwood Drive in the upscale Holmby Hills area of Los Angeles.
