Whale massacre on Faroe Islands

Locals running down the beach to kill the whales
Faroe Islands is located in the North Atlantic and whaling there is the hunting and slaughtering of mainly long-finned pilot whales. The whale hunt, known as ‘grindadrap or grind’ is an old tradition dating back to 1584. The whale meat and blubber is said to provide food and whale oil for the Faroese people.

Hundreds of locals at the scene of the mass slaughter

Just last week, about 250 whales were slaughtered on two beaches in Bøur and Tórshavn, turning the sea red with blood. Fishermen and locals were seen leaping into the water to stab them with glee. Even though the grindadrap is legal, the horrific scenes were filmed by activist Sea Shepherd, who describes themselves as a non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organisation.

Presently, the islands have a thriving fish industry with exports to U.S. and Europe.
