A huge construction crane was said to have collapsed as a result of strong winds thus crashing through the roof of the Grand Mosque in Mecca. Pictures of the incident by Twitter users show numerous blood-covered bodies strewn on a marble floor. The Saudi Civil Defense says search and rescue teams and medical workers form the Saudi Red Crescent have been sent to the scene. An official number of casualties is yet to be released but it is being reported that at least 62 people has lost their lives as a result of the incidence.
Millions of Muslims are currently in the Muslim holy city to perform the sacred pilgrimage. Last year, the kingdom reduced the numbers permitted to perform haj for safety reasons because of construction work to enlarge the Grand Mosque.
