You know WiFi.....but have you heard of LiFi?

Being able to connect your smartphone to the web with just a lamp is the promise of Li-Fi which has the capability to be 100 times faster than Wi-Fi. At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week, French start-up Oledcomm demonstrated Li-Fi, which uses revolutionary wireless technology to connect to the internet. The demonstration showed an iPhone playing a video as soon as it came into contact with an office lamp. The technology uses frequencies generated by LED bulbs which flicker on and off imperceptibly thousands of times a second to beam information through air. In comparison to Wi-Fi which uses radio waves to transmit data, Li-Fi has the capability to go 100 times faster.
Li-Fi is short for ‘light fidelity’ and performs with lightning speed. The technology emerged out of laboratories in 2015 into everyday setting in France such as museum and shopping malls. At the moment it’s not certain the new system will become the new Wi-Fi due to its restrictions as it only works if a smartphone or device is placed directly in the light and it cannot travel through walls. Backers of Li-Fi say it would be ideal in places where Wi-Fi is restricted, such as schools and hospitals, according to AFP.
"Li-Fi has a place in hospitals because it does not create interference with medical materials," head of French lighting manufacturer Coolight Joel Denimal said. In supermarkets it could be used to give information about a product, or in museums about a painting, by using lamps nearby.
