More woes for Maria Sharapova as more sponsors call it quit

Sponsors have moved quickly to distance themselves from Maria Sharapova after the five-time Grand Slam tennis champion admitted failing a drug test. Nike was the first to suspend its relationship with the popular tennis star, while the likes of Porsche, Tag Heuer and Avon has since follow suit.
Luxury carmaker Porsche, a division of Volkswagen, said on Tuesday it would suspend tennis player Maria Sharapova as its brand ambassador in light of her admission that she failed a doping test.
"We regret the current news about Maria Sharapova. Until further details emerge and we are able to analyse the situation, we have decided to suspend planned activities," Porsche said in a statement
Luxury watchmaker, Tag Heuer also decided not to renew its contract with the tennis star.
Ms Sharapova said she had been taking meldonium since 2006, on the advice of her family doctor. She is one of the highest paid female athletes with earnings of over $30m last year from winnings and endorsements.
Nigel Currie, an independent sports consultant, said brands would not have responded so quickly five years ago, but they now have to react faster in the modern, social media environment.
"They are paranoid about their image, and the slightest risk to their image, they run to the hills."
