Boxing legend Muhammad Ali on life support
The former world heavyweight champion is close to death in a US hospital, a source close to the family said. The sporting legend’s family have already started making funeral arrangements – as they revealed: “It’s just a matter of hours.”
The family initially said the 74-year-old was in a “fair” condition. But he is now reportedly on life support and his condition is “extraordinarily grave”. Doctors continue to battle the breathing problem picked up by the star. Four of his nine children – including daughters Laila, Hana and Maryum – are by his bedside.
Yesterday, his spokesperson Bob Gunnell said the boxing legend was in a fair condition.
He said: “Ali, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, is being treated by his team of doctors and is in fair condition.
"A brief hospital stay is expected. At this time, the Muhammad Ali family respectfully requests privacy."
Born Cassius Marcellus Clay, Ali won his first heavyweight championship at the age of just 22 in 1964. He was stripped of the honour when he refused to serve in the Vietnam War but won the title again in 1974 and 1978.
