9 sexually transmitted diseases you need to know about

Taking care of your sexual health and that of your partner is important if you're going to enjoy a trouble-free sex life. Here is some info on some of the diseases you both need to be aware of:

1.    HIV/AIDS
AIDS (Acquired immune deficiency syndrome or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is a syndrome caused by a virus called HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). The illness alters the immune system, making people much more vulnerable to infections and diseases

2.    GONORRHOEA
Gonorrhoea is one of the most dangerous sexually transmitted infections and can cause lifelong problems if it isn't nipped in the bud. It is a venereal disease involving inflammatory discharge from the urethra or vagina.

3.    CHLAMYDIA
Chlamydia is the most common STI in the world and, if not treated in time, can cause damage to the reproductive system and eventually lead to infertility. It is a very small parasitic bacterium that, like a virus, requires the biochemical mechanisms of another cell in order to reproduce. Bacteria of this type cause various diseases including trachoma, psittacosis, and nonspecific urethritis.

4.    HPV
About 80 percent of sexually active men and women will be infected with human papillomavirus at some point in their lives. Fortunately, in most cases, our immune systems will take care of the problem. HPV is a different virus than HIV and HSV (herpes). Some types can cause health problems including genital warts and cancers.

5.    HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS
Most guys haven't ever heard of the human papillomavirus, yet many will get it at some stage in their lives without even knowing it. It is a virus with subtypes that cause diseases in humans ranging from common warts to cervical cancer

6.    SYPHILIS
Syphilis is one of the 10 most common STIs, and although it can be successfully treated with antibiotics, it has not been eradicated by any means. It is a chronic bacterial disease that is contracted chiefly by infection during sexual intercourse, but also congenitally by infection of a developing fetus.

7.    HEPATITIS B
Currently about 350 million people worldwide are infected with hepatitis B, a disease that is spread mainly by sexual contact. It is  a severe form of viral hepatitis transmitted in infected blood, causing fever, debility, and jaundice.

8.    GENITAL HERPES
Genital herpes might not kill you, but once you're infected, there's no getting rid of it. Here are seven facts you need to know about it. It is a disease characterized by blisters in the genital area, caused by a variety of the herpes simplex virus.

9.    ZIKA VIRUS
