Fugitive on the run caught after 17 years after walking out of an open prison where he was serving 5 years for assault

A prisoner who went on the run 17 years ago was finally back behind bars last night after being caught drink-driving in his Mercedes. Greg Newby, now 42, was just over halfway through a five-year sentence for assault when he was granted home leave from Kirkham open prison in 2000 and failed to return. He had been refused parole because the probation service said he was likely to reoffend. Newby settled in Northampton but his luck ran out in Wrexham, north Wales, when he met some old friends, had a few drinks and was seen hitting the kerb.

Flintshire Magistrates’ Court told Newby their hands were tied and he was jailed for six months for failing to return to jail.  He was banned from driving for 17 months and faces the prospect of another two years and two months in custody to serve the remainder of his sentence. Newby was one of 169 prisoners who absconded from the Lancashire prison in 2000. Absconder rates have since been slashed, with 12 inmates failing to return last year
