When children are young, parents warn them about the dangers of getting into cars with strangers. However, this rule should apparently apply to adults as well. Authorities in Australia, are asking women not be afraid to come forward and file complaints if they are sexually assaulted by Uber drivers. This comes after three Uber drivers were arrested over a short time for sexually abusing women in their vehicles. One driver, 41-year-old Muhammad Naveed of Sydney, was jailed for a minimum of 6 years and 4 months and a maximum of 9 years in prison for raping a woman.
According to prosecutors, Naveed picked up the intoxicated woman from a bar. He drove her to a gas station, where he bought condoms. He then drove to a secluded area where he raped the woman. Naveed told the court that the sex with the 22-year-old woman was consensual, but the evidence showed otherwise. Judge Deborah Payne said Naveed "clearly took advantage in the most terrible way."
In another incident, a 47-year-old Uber driver from Queensland, who has not yet been named, was arrested and had been charged with the rape and deprivation of liberty for raping a teenage girl three times.
In the latest incident, a 37-year-old Uber driver appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court. He is accused of raping a 16-year-old girl. Police said that the latest two incidents are not related and they believe there are more women who have been victimized by Uber drivers.
