Why does this coloring book cost $30,875?

What does it take to create a $30,875 coloring book?
On July 25, luxury website VeryFirstTo.com announced the launch of the world’s most expensive coloring book. Since it’s neither an antique nor is it encrusted with diamonds, the key may very well be you—given there are ten bespoke illustrations tailored entirely on the most important people, places and events in your life. Obviously, every element is exquisite. In addition to selecting the sturdiest and most supple Italian leather, the treasured book is hand stitched by one of the world’s leading craftsmen with 50 years’ experience.

Boasting the exceptional binding work by Masters Bookbinding, whose clients range from Aston Martin to the Commonwealth Charter, expect to see some beautiful gold leaf lettering and recessed book title for a rich, tactile quality and luxurious look. According to Marcel Knobil—Founder of VeryFirstTo, Superbrands and Cool BrandLeaders, the recessed title calls for a traditional debossing process involving a bespoke wooden die block plus exceptional control in pressure, heat and die depth. As for the gold leaf lettering, the particular type used here is water gilding, a method that's virtually unchanged over the years and remains as one of the most difficult techniques done completely by hand.
The entire production process—from the consultation to the fully bound book—is expected to take 22 days to a month to complete. In addition to the illustrator, the book requires four to five people from Masters Bookbinding plus a managing representative at VeryFirstTo a total of 36 man-hours to execute.
Elaborate as the material and production method may be, the bulk of the cost is the illustrator’s fee.
