One dead, several injured in Cape Town warehouse blast


One person was killed and several injured in a blast at a Shoprite distribution warehouse in Stikland, Cape Town on Tuesday. In a statement, The Shoprite Group said an electrical contractor died while inspecting a transformer while two others suffered serious burn injuries. A further four were being treated for smoke inhalation.
"The fire that broke out as a result of the explosion was extinguished within an hour and was contained in a small area of the Returns Centre," it said.



"A full investigation is underway to determine the cause of the explosion and extent of the damage. At this stage, it seems that operations will not be affected for a prolonged period of time."
Shoprite went on to express its condolences to the families and colleagues of the deceased. Trauma counselling was also being provided to those who witnessed the incident.
Earlier, Resq Medix Ambulance Service spokesperson Warren Cupido who was at the scene said it looked like an "electrical explosion".
People were evacuated and the fire was brought under control after the blast at Cilmor Street in an industrial area. The city's Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Theo Layne said that a transformer was alight when they arrived at the scene.
