Mother brings newborn to hospital claiming she found him at McDonald’s

The mother lost custody of her 2 children after handing over her baby to staff members of the DePaul Medical Center while claiming that she found the baby. 23-year-old Nicole Jones, who was believed to be a hero for saving the life of a baby, turned out to be a suspect. She has since been jailed. According to prosecutors, Jones of Norfolk, Virginia, walked into a hospital and handed the baby boy to a nurse and said that she found him at a McDonald’s restaurant.
The baby was in critical condition after he had lost a lot of blood because the umbilical cord had been cut but not clamped. Jones later admitted that she gave birth to the baby boy but she “freaked out” because she did not know she was pregnant. When police searched her home, they found her 1-year-old son was alone while she was at the hospital.
She was charged with child neglect because she left the 1-year-old boy unattended for about an hour. Jones was charged with two felony child neglect charges and one child cruelty charge. In a plea deal with prosecutors, she pleaded guilty to one count of child neglect and one count of misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
The mother was sentenced to five years for the child neglect. All but seven months were suspended. She was also sentenced to 12 months for the misdemeanor charge but it was suspended.
The baby has recovered. He and his older brother who share the same father were placed in the custody of a family member. Their father is involved in their lives while the mother was banned from contacting her children. She may have some supervised visits with her children with the approval from Child Protective Services but she will have to take parenting classes first.
