Transition of a 10 year old transgender

When adults make the decision to change their sexuality because they feel their gender identity does not match the gender that was 'assigned'  to them at birth, we relate with them because we feel they are matured enough to take such decision. However, when a minor feels the need to do the same, I cant but ask, should age be an important criteria before being allowed to take such a decision? Afterall, if there are age limits to getting married, driving, buying alchohol etc, shouldnt there be an age limit to gender transition?
I came across this article on DailyMail about a 10year old boy (pictured above) who claims to be a girl in his head and heart! He began to identify as a female at a young age and dress like a female since grade 1. Her name has been legally changed from Liam to Lia and would soon be placed on puberty blockers.
