Over 10,000 fishes have died in temporary holding tanks in Brazil, during the construction of the proposed world's largest fresh water aquarium. The Acquario Ceará, being built in the northeastern Brazilian city of Fortaleza, is supposed to be a design showpiece meant to drive tourism in the state of Ceará after the World Cup in 2016.

The facility was supposed to have finished late last year but there has been delays. The fish which were supposed to occupy this new home have been in quarantine with a firm called Anambi. They include various species of fish imported from Asia, Africa and Oceania. A document released by Anambi states that majority of the fish died from a temperature drop as winter approached in the southern hemisphere country. According to Anambi's Augusto Silva, "The transfer of fish was planned between January and February, but the tanks were not ready".
Official investigations have begin as to the cause of the death of the over 10,000 fish as authorities in Mato Grosso do Sul state blames the company. They claimed to have found evidence of poor oxygenation and inadequate cleaning of the tanks.
